Circuit City blows its last fuse, all remaining stores to be liquidated
Circuit City announced today it will liquidate all remaining 567 US stores after failing to find a buyer or figure out a refinancing deal, reports the AP. The nation's second-largest electronics retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late last year; at the time it held 5-10% of the US video game market.
Consumers should keep an eye out for any sales following the announcement. No word on how this will affect game pre-orders, but we strongly recommend trying to get your money back, like, now.

Have to start looking up Circuit City locations in Northern Philly/Merion township
SirFishouse @ Jan 16th 2009 12:12PM
I can't believe this... It's Montgomery Ward all over again.
BananaBoat @ Jan 16th 2009 2:57PM
And just like with Montgomery Ward, I'm left holding a broken piece of merchandise that I hope I can still get replaced.
Come on Circuit City warranty department....don't f*ck me now....
aj @ Jan 16th 2009 12:12PM
In the two cities I lived in in Florida, I think all of the Best Buys and Ikea's I came across were actually located in those distinctive buildings with the big red entrance.
Circuit City never did that well, did it?
Rhamsey @ Jan 16th 2009 8:41PM
sweet, another failing store. when fye near me closed last december i made out about $400 with the money i saved. thank god there is a circuit city right near my house as well. :)
Phantom @ Jan 16th 2009 12:13PM
Ahhhh, you smell that. That's the smell of a sale and 60 dollars games going for 30 dollars.
F1 @ Jan 16th 2009 12:16PM
Smells like... Victory!
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 12:19PM
Liquidators make their own prices........dont look for games THAT cheap just yet........
Phantom @ Jan 16th 2009 7:20PM
Well, they might not be that cheap, but they will be cheap.
Now lets see what's on my list.
Twilight Princess
Super Smash Bros(I just got a Wii for Christmas)
Resistance 2
etc
Phantom @ Jan 16th 2009 12:24PM
Wonder how cheap HDTV's will get, I could use one for my room. Or maybe a laptop, who knows, think of all the...
POSSIBILITIES *.*
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 12:44PM
well after they mark EVERYTHING back up to MSRP and Take off 40% it will be back at its Regular Circuit City price......i.e. you will see DVDs that say they have been marked down from $25-30
You pretty much have to wait for things to hit 505+ off before you are TRULY saving money.....thing is MOST of the stuff is gone by the time it hits that point because poor saps believe they are getting a deal already at 30% off.......
Latin Trident @ Jan 16th 2009 12:50PM
I smell xbox 360 120 gb hard drives going for $30!!! (fingers crossed)
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 12:57PM
@Trident.......I think I'd rather get a 500GB Laptop Drive for my PS3 for $50
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 1:01PM
that was suppose to be 50% off......
BananaBoat @ Jan 16th 2009 3:00PM
He's right, they'll most likely slash games heavily as loss leaders, while trying to hoodwink people on the price of TV's and other high margin items.
That is what CompUSA did anyway. I got a TON of games for little to nothing when they went into liquidation, but all of the parts you'd actually want to buy from a CompUSA (harddrives, cases, etc) weren't on sale till a few months of liquidation had passed. The other problem, obviously, is that if you were to buy a TV or something from CC now, you wouldn't have anything but the manufacturers warranty, so it's definitely a buyer beware type of situation.
Luis @ Jan 16th 2009 4:58PM
If the COMP USA closing was any indication, don't expect to get any games for any discount. They might give you a small percent off of the games that nobody really wants. Don't exect anything off of game systems either. Microsoft and Sony will buy those back, or another store, and sell them instantly.
There should be some decent sales on TVs and computers though. And I scored a pretty cheap copy of Vista Ultimate. So maybe look for stuff in those departments.
But I would love to be proven wrong, because getting some new games at a discount would be awesome.
nealbailey @ Jan 16th 2009 4:15PM
Oh please, liquidations are more expensive than the original store sale prices. When CompUSA went under I was shocked to see the prices were higher than they were the week before the liquidation. It took months for games to drop below $39.99 and the games left over could be bought used online for $10 or so.
Zertoss @ Jan 16th 2009 12:13PM
I guess this means they'll stop pestering me to buy an extended warranty on my TV.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jan 16th 2009 12:20PM
this suxs i had a circuitcity gamercard. atleast i get my money back now

Damn..
Gregorius @ Jan 16th 2009 12:17PM
It already happened here in Phoenix. There will be some good deals, but I think you can still find better ones online.
Mike @ Jan 16th 2009 12:19PM
Who the hell pre-ordered a game from Circuit City that hasn't already been released? People knew this was coming for months.
Donald @ Jan 16th 2009 3:53PM
I thought that $20 billion pre-order for Duke Nukem Forever seemed sketchy...
samfish - RIP Ricardo Montalban :( @ Jan 16th 2009 12:21PM
Guess I better start thinking of things I want but don't need...too bad I just bought a new monitor a few weeks ago.
...maybe I should buy a bigger TV...
cjshrader @ Jan 16th 2009 12:27PM
When all the Circuit Citys went out of business here in Georgia, the sale prices were never very good. Most of the prices I saw I could easily find better online or even at Best Buy.
I think they were marking up their prices and then discounting that back down to a "normal" price. The deals were awful.
AwesomeTown @ Jan 16th 2009 12:46PM
@cjshrader
That's exactly what the liquidators do. Everyone's better off looking elsewhere, especially for something like an HDTV.
Courtney @ Jan 16th 2009 1:22PM
Yep, that's always my experience with retail liquidations. No deals until the last day, when nothing good is left. I've even found this true for small, local places closing themselves down.
Jake B @ Jan 16th 2009 4:51PM
Some friends of mine worked at a liquidating Kmart. They hid a bunch of choice bits of merchandise in this one wall that you could get into somehow. Anyway when the store was about to close they retrieved the merchandise and purchased on the CHEAP!
NukeAssault @ Jan 16th 2009 12:21PM
EXPECTED/10
Hope there are some sweet deals. Not only on video games. =D
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 12:23PM
oh Circuit City......now Besty TRULY has NO Competition......as Stores Like hhGregg & Frys just dont have a broad enough network of stores......hell Maybe SEARS will look at this as an oppurtunity to step its game up and get back the market it once had back in the 70's and 80's.......
Here in Greensboro that just leaves SEARS, Best Buy & hhGregg....and they are even higher than Best Buy.......my Next TV will have to come From Sam's Club or Costco......
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Jan 16th 2009 1:52PM
No competition, besides the internet, anyway. Anything at BB can be bought for much cheaper on the internet. There's nothing at BB that I couldn't wait 3 days to get.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 2:00PM
yea but thats you and maybe a few other hundred thousand people........me myself.....when I buy something like a 50" TV......I want it THEN.......dont want to have to pay $50 to ship it NOR have to wait for it......most people still go to Brick & Mortar stores.......and will for years......
Steve-o @ Jan 16th 2009 2:32PM
I agree Aggie... when I bought my 40" Samsung, I had already found better deals online but if something should go wrong within the first couple of weeks I'd much rather deal with a B&M store like Circuit City or Best Buy to get a replacement rather than the hassle of sending it back and having to rely on telephone customer support and then waiting for them to confirm the problem and ship out another unit, etc....
dabamf @ Jan 16th 2009 12:23PM
I have a service plan through them for my TV and sound system. Adios...
Duke @ Jan 16th 2009 2:25PM
Their site says:
"I purchased an extended warranty (Circuit City Advantage Plan). Will that still be honored?
Yes, absolutely. Our Advantage Plan service is handled through dedicated service companies not affiliated with Circuit City, ensuring that there will be no disruption in your ability to get service for your covered products."

The Dark Wayne @ Jan 16th 2009 12:27PM
what? you want best buy to close?
wtf?
Duke @ Jan 16th 2009 12:29PM
Why the hell would you want BB to close? Unless you own a small record shop or something, that makes little sense for a consumer to want.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 16th 2009 12:41PM
if Best Buy Closes that just Leaves SEARS(on a NATIONAL Scale)......why would you want that???
I mean I dont particularity like Best Buy due to they RAPE people with their "Geek Squad" Pricing......but I wouldnt want them to go belly up.......
Duke @ Jan 16th 2009 12:43PM
The geek squad is pretty bad. Those guys really screw people.
ChooChooCharlie @ Jan 16th 2009 12:51PM
I like Best Buy.
Their prices aren't anything amazing, but they usually have stuff in stock and have a decent selection of games to peruse.

Sucks. Circuit City always had sweet deals.
Cellien @ Jan 16th 2009 12:35PM
Indeed. I bought tons of stuff there because in the past, they had the best sales and also those awesome $40 off coupons.
axion22 @ Jan 16th 2009 12:27PM
Where's Sam Kennedy when you need him?
Mike @ Jan 16th 2009 12:27PM
I wouldn't hold my breath for sweet deals directly from Circuit City on this one...the article I read said they were using liquidation companies, not retail. And there's this little tid bit too...

dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jan 16th 2009 12:27PM
I for one welcome our new Best Buy overlords.
Except not really. Best Buy pisses me off. So long, Circuit City... and CompUSA before that... and Computer City before *that*... and and and... damn
ChooChooCharlie @ Jan 16th 2009 12:27PM
The only problem is that once they start the liquidation sales, they freeze their prices and discount from there.
The Circuit City near me closed about a month ago and their prices were pretty terrible for the most part. Example: they had the 120gig 360 HDD for $167 versus their MSRP of $200. Only problem was Best Buy had it for the new MSRP of $150 right next door. I almost bought one too. Glad I resisted.
So be careful if you decide to shop there. Since all liquidation sales are final, if you get ripped off, you're screwed.
