- IGN (85/100): "When it comes to making a purchase decision on Moon, I encourage anyone that loves FPS games on DS to check this one out, as its technical offering, story, design, style, and control are all amazingly well done. The game can certainly get repetitive at times, as a few bosses are used multiple times with compounding difficulty elements added to them to change things up a bit ... but for the most part Renegade Kid has offered an experience that's more tuned towards the adventure side of things, adding in plenty of combat to keep the experience fresh."
- Nintendo Power (75/100): "Quickly becoming the torchbearers for the FPS genre on the DS, Renegade Kid builds on lessons learned from last year's horror title Dementium: The Ward... the game ratchets up the action... compelling story and diverse gameplay."
- Modojo (60/100): "We have mixed feelings with Moon. It's a superb visual achievement with spectacular controls and fun shooting, but we grew tired of the old school "hit this switch to activate this door" gameplay. So long as you go into it expecting a slow-paced first person adventure instead of Doom, you'll enjoy this lunar vacation."
- GamePro (40/100): "Moon proves itself as a creepy and innovative portable FPS experience, weighed down by a severe lack of challenge and variety."
Metareview -- Moon (DS)
49
Developer Renegade Kid has shown it is quite technically proficient when it comes to making a first-person shooter on the DS. In 2007, it surprised us with Dementium: The Ward, and now the small development team brings Moon to the dual screens of the DS. The early reviews are all across the map in raw score, but they seem to chime in on the game's technical achievement and certain gameplay issues. Wait, read a review instead of just looking at the number? We know, this is madness we speak of.

Well after reading the reviews, I've become fairly interested in it. I'll give it a shot.

Is Renegade Kid the company that either Bozon or Casamassina does "consulting" for? Not that IGN disproportionately overrating a Nintendo game would be shocking news. It's the site's weakest channel despite having good editors due to the awful bias.

Yep. Couldn't possibly be that a reviewer at IGN genuinely likes the game enough to give it a score. Nope, there always has to be an agenda.

Check out IGNs score of Wii Music if you need to see whether or not they are bias.
Some reviews had Wii Music in the 8 range. IGN slapped it with a 5/10.

God damn it, I hear this every time, when ever a game doesn't get perfect 9-10s, its reviewer X is "teh bias" or some other crap like that.
My favorite, I loved how everyone would always shit over what gamespot scores are, regardless of what everyone else said.

I'm going to have to check this out.

Technically, you're right but it's a common term for the fact that due to a coincidence of its own rotation speed and revolution speed around the Earth, the moon has a far side which is always turned away from the Earth (so if we looked at the moon from a telescope we'd always see the same landscape).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_side_of_the_Moon
But technically you're right, otherwise there wouldn't be different aspects of the moon (full, crescent, lunar eclipse...). But since the moon is a sphere and all over can be dark... does that still technically make that as one giant dark side?
/plode.

Awesome - thanks for the info. I've been looking forward to this one for awhile now. Is the control scheme as wonky as Dementium: The Ward?

Really Lario? I thought the controls were the best thing going for Dementium (next to the frame rate). It was the AI that pissed me off. Every damn enemy was programmed to head straight for you when they spotted you. That and crappy weapons.

In that same review:"You can pick from Rookie, Normal, and Veteran, but trust me when I say that even the most hardcore of players can find they have their work cut out for them on Veteran."
Wut?

I'm glad Moon turned out to be good, and that it is getting attention. So many people think that the DS is merely a kid's game machine, but there are a few cool games that fly under everyone's radar.

DS isn't a kid's machine-- it's Mom's machine now.
I still love mine though. Can't wait for TrackMania DS in the States.

I really like FPS (and I have a DS, And I bought COD 4 for it), and was wondering if this game works well on the DS; controls, frames, graphics. Been looking forward to this, but now getting cold feet.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Framerate and graphics are supposed to be great (for the DS). All the reviews agree on that.
As for controls, I haven't played it yet, but metroid prime hunters played great on the DS. (though I invested in a thumb stylus... dunno how it'd work with a pen stylus).
One thing though, its not really an FPS... its a first person adventure game.. More like Fallout3/Oblivion/Metroid/Dark Corners..

Moon looks like one of the very few reasons to keep the DS as opposed to the selling of it, which is the route that I took.
Posted: Jan 17th 2009 3:07AM Anticrawl said
I never understood the whole selling consoles and games thing. You get like 1/4th or 1/8th the money back which gets eaten right up within a day. Seems silly to me. I'd rather hold on to my systems and games encase I ever feel the urge to come back to them. That and I'd rather not have people make a fortune off of my shit.

Yeah good call, I didn't mean that. I hate it when people think the PS3's library sucks, so that was pretty hypocritical of me.
I just meant that I was kind of disappointed by the games on the DS. Advance Wars and the Castlevanias were my favorite, but I was let down by New Super Mario Bros., that Zelda game, Metroid Prime Hunters, Mega Man ZX, etc. I'm sure getting a new job didn't help my opinion - I had all the time in the world to play my DS and PSP at the gas station - now I work in an office that would nooooot allow that.
DS is a good system with a good library of games, but I traded it in at Gamestop when they had a good deal and got Rock Band. Rock Band got a lot more use :)

The DS is basically the PS2 of handhelds, it has casual stuff but there are a lot of great games for it, certainly more than the PSP.

I love it when people complain about the lack of a good (or any) FPS on the DS. Considering every single other system has about 900 FPS games available, you'd think FPS fans wouldn't be salivating over the DS to begin with.
Posted: Jan 17th 2009 6:35AM (Unverified) said
But its because the DS is MADE for FPS games... Metroid Hunter's controls rocked.

It sounds great to me. I love FPAs (first person adventures).
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the low reviews were down to expectations of an FPS, which it isn't. Everything i've read about the details of it sounds awesome.

I just ordered it, looking forward to giving it a try. I don't buy too many DS games but I'm optimistic about this one. Wouldn't mind hearing from anyone who has bought it and didn't enjoy it though.

Reads review...wait...repetitivity and hate having to find your way through a level to toss a switch?
Then why in the hell are games with small, bland crappy level designs and boring gun and run themes rarely below a 9? (Bioshock,Halo 3,Jericho,COD,UT3,ect,ect,ect)
It sounds to me like its not simple enough for your average gamer....
UHG!!
