As much as we all like to complain about how Harmonix gimped Rock Band, not everyone thought it was so bad. The first Rock Band game has served over a million customers in 2008, with the Wii version of the game outperforming all other consoles. Odd, considering the game had practically no features.
As for Rock Band 2, it's been less of a success story. Since the game released in mid-December, it has managed to sell only 150,000 copies. Will it eventually catch up to the first game? Doesn't seem likely, but only time will tell.

That seems extremely odd. I'd never consider buying that gimped RB1. I'm surprised more people haven't bought RB2 though, I myself picked it up (game only) after I found out I could use my GH:WT instruments. It's pretty nice (and cost effective) to be able to play so many music games with one set of instruments.

It's probably because everyone was so chapped at Harmonix for gimping the first, that they all picked up GH:WT instead. I forgave Harmonix and picked up the RB 2 disc and drums, along with GH:WT disc and guitars. Now I have the best of both worlds.

The average consumer who bought RB1 either A) Realized it was gimped compared to other versions they played and were turned off, or B) Is not ready to buy another Rock Band game less than 6 months after the first.
Either way, because they most likely don't read up on news like the readers on this site (and other blogs), "casuals" have no idea that the RB2 is better than RB1. They probably don't even realize you can buy the game standalone...
I realize Harmonix wanted to put up a fight against GH:WT, but I think releasing RB2 less than a year after RB1 -- on all systems -- was a mistake. It is much improved over their previous offering on the Wii, and for this I will probably pick up the standalone game, but I don't think they are going to see as quick an adoption of RB2 as RB1. Harmonix knows this and that's why they have already announced that they will not put out RB3 this year. It's the best thing they can do, really.

I am surprised, considering Rock Band 2 is an overall better game than GH:WT, and since it is miles away better than RB1.

GH:WT is quite a letdown from GT3. RB2 is better than GH:WT by far. It may not be as "hardcore" as GH:WT, but it's a much better game experience. I've been playing it for weeks (I bought the game launch weekend), and I still feel like there's a lot left in the game. I was done with GH:WT in about 2 weeks. If anything WT left me itching to play GH3 more than anything.

No surprises.
Rock Band 2 Wii was released barely a week before Christmas. That's too late for most Christmas shoppers. EA's mistake.
Had it released in November they might not have had to lay so many people off.

Like the above poster said, this is no surprise at all. Poor design choices and poor release date choices lead to this. Heck, if you look at the numbers GH:WT has sold twice as much as RB2 and will probably continue to widen the gap in sales as the year goes on.

Strange, cus last time I looked for RB2 Wii, I couldn't find it in any stores near me (the Special Edition Bundle).

Well, the Wii has sold as much as the PS3 and 360 combined, so it's no real shock to me.

I wonder if this is partly a supply issue. I still haven't seen a full Rock Band 2 for Wii kit in a store, and I see buckets of GH:WT (I know you can't actually fit that box into a bucket 'cause they're so huge). For your normal consumer, they look the same and GH is a very well-known brand.
The Rock Band 1 bundle dropping to a hundred in November made it a pretty attractive package to the average folks who wanted a game for Christmas and they're still enjoying the hell out of it. Why get another one so soon?

The timing of the release is likely what is hurting them. It came out too long after GH:WT, allowing that game to dominate the holiday sales. It also came out too close to Christmas when most people have done a fair amount of their shopping. And of course it also came out far too late after the other two systems, meaning anyone with a choice already bought it on the PS3 or 360.

Nope, it’s cause Rock Band [Wii] arrived so late that people didn’t even notice there’s a Rock Band 2.
All else I gotta say is they should’ve added all those features in Rock Band in the first place.
Timing is everything!

The genre is finally dying. Thank Miyamoto. It'll soon regress to the niche and real games will regain the spotlight.

I think the first sold well despite the lack of features cause the majority of people don't care. I mean i'm basing this on the fact that that two people i know bought Rock Band only cause you can play drums, and they dont care at all about world tour mode and all that.

Nothing surprising here considering the fact that Rock Band 2 for the Wii came out just before Christmas, not even a month ago!
Plus since last October you can get the Rock Band Wii full kit for $99!
And more importantly, the Guitar Hero World Tour instruments WORKS with Rock Band 2. I ain't a fan of the RB2 instruments, so I only bought the game and use it with the GHWT instruments.

GH:WT is pure crap in my eyes, I played it for 2 weeks and just got bored of it. I saw Rock Band 2 game only the day after Christmas and have been playing it since. It's just a better game in general, from the look to the game mechanic. (star power saving bandmakes, ect) plus the setlist was just horrible to me in WT, whereas rock bands setlist I enjoy much more, and with so much DLC that they are bringing to the Wii...Yeah, RB2 is my favorite of the two, although I do like the WT peripherals (Once you get a working set)
I also think that it might be selling less is because I haven't seen a single rock band 2 full game bundle ANYWHERE, just the disk only and RB1, of course, I live in Wisconsin, and it took forever before I started seeing rock band 1 kits here.

EA missed the ball this holiday season. history shows if it isn't out on shelves on black friday most companies push back the release. NguyC for the NYT was just blogging how companies should lead on the wii and port to other systems. EA could have dominated the band sims market had they released all version at once. Guitar Hero sold like mad this holidays and the wii version made up more than half of those sales. tisk tisk.

Rock Band 2 has sluggish sales because of 1. the delay of Rock Band 1, 2. the poor quality of Rock Band 1 for Wii in comparison to other systems, 3. the narrow gap of time between the release of Rock Band 1 and Rock Band 2, 4. the price drop to $99 for Rock Band 1 mere weeks before Rock Band 2's release, and 5. the hardly-publicized, mysterious, and unfortunate handling of getting Rock Band 2 for Wii out in stores both late and too close to Christmas to garner many sales.

I'm jumping to Rock Band 2 soon. GHWT disappointed on many levels, but most of all, the songs just aren't fun.
