Steam gets mo' MMOs from Sony Online Entertainment
Though we've always had to fight an urge to call them MOMs (massively online multiplayer-ers), MMOs have become an internet-bound force to be reckoned with. It's no surprise, then, that Valve's Steam service serendipitously bumped into Sony Online's mob of mmohs at a recent meeting of internet-bound forces to be reckoned with. They hit it off, one thing led to another and now it's all over the blogosphere.
A "groundbreaking" library of SOE titles is now available on the digital download service, including the EverQuest and EverQuest II collections, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Pirates of the Burning Sea. You'll also find the expansions EverQuest Seeds of Destruction and EverQuest II The Shadow Odyssey available for purchase.
As a special introductory offer, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, EverQuest Secrets of Faydwer and EverQuest II Rise of Kunark are being sold at "special" prices during the first ten days of availability. New game accounts for purchased MMOs will receive 30 days of gameplay, though the offer excludes existing game and Station Access accounts.
Well, enjoy the games! It was nice knowing you.

Epic WHY?
kinshadow @ Jan 16th 2009 4:51PM
Sony gets most of the money from subscriptions, so box sales are not as important.
Valve gets a cut of the box sales and it costs very little to put up a new title on Steam.
Thus, everyone wins. Valves can now get expansion cash. Sony gets advertising to more players.
BTW, EQ2 is a very good MMO. >>WoW in my opinion
dabamf @ Jan 16th 2009 4:56PM
Fair enough, will these titles sell?
Haggard @ Jan 16th 2009 4:58PM
Well, they're still making expansion packs - even for the original. So I assume so.
MegaSnort @ Jan 16th 2009 4:51PM
Take it from me, someone who has been playing MMOs religiously since 1999 and has purchased several SOE products: SOE is a cancer upon the video-game industry. Now, before you Playstation fanbois start with the flames, i'm talking about SOE specifically and not Sony as a whole. SOE is a housecat and gamers are its litterbox. John Smedley is the devil himself.

I dunno bro, that's a pretty huge generalization:

Some good games in there...

Normally I would have agreed with you, but I am no longer bitter about SWG. It was a trash game from the start, and 1 million Blizzards couldn't have made that game into a good MMO. I don't blame SOE for that, and even if I did, they have learned from that abortion.
The Agency looks pretty decent, and I have seen the DC Universe MMO has a few of my Xbox360 fanboy friends looking into a PS3. SOE has an interesting lineup this year.
HitNRun @ Jan 16th 2009 5:34PM
Lots of good points in this thread.
1) SOE is a cancer and their games are self-flagellation where you have to pay for the whip.
2) Their new lineup is interesting and worth a look, if not a dollar.
3) SWG was always a joke, as transparent a cash grab as a C-3PO figurine in a cereal box.
4) PS3 fans (on other forums) need to understand what SOE actually is before lambasting people who hate SOE.
MegaSnort @ Jan 16th 2009 5:51PM
I'm not saying all their games are trash, i'm just saying SOE is unethical. Not only has Smed repeatedly lied to customers, he has done so right before expansions were released and shortly after current subscribers bought them Smed has gone ahead and done the exact opposite of what he originally promised. Recently, this was done with EQ2 following the Shadow Odyssey expansion. Smed had said, up till the SO release, that no way no how would SOE ever implement a cash shop into the game. Well, guess what was announced recently. SWG:NGE followed the release of the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion if you remember that whole fiasco.

I want to air brush this box art onto my van, sans the Everquest II logo.
Strategy_Panda (The Sandwich Poisoning Crew) @ Jan 16th 2009 11:23PM
is that the shaggin' wagon or the pedo-van?
Levi @ Jan 16th 2009 11:52PM
I call it the candy van.
"Hey kid. Wanna lollipop?"
Marty @ Jan 16th 2009 5:28PM
I'm surprised people still play EQ... I figured all the world had migrated to WoW by now.
Kodros @ Jan 16th 2009 6:06PM
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't get the point. I've been digitally downloading their games for years from their Station Store.
dabamf @ Jan 16th 2009 6:34PM
But now you get to download and install Steam first. Doesn't that make you happy?
Smurfy @ Jan 17th 2009 9:45AM
The point is that you can get them through Steam now and thusly attach them to your Steam account and give Valve money.
RankHypocrisy @ Jan 17th 2009 9:32AM
Are you nerds ever going to give up your grudge against SOE for changing your beloved SWG?
OMG, they took a crappy game with one kind of combat and changed it to a different kind of combat!1! I think I'll be bitter about this until the day I die!1!
Get over it already.
Tridus @ Jan 19th 2009 11:52AM
Vanguard is still alive? Who knew.
