Sounds fair. That's pretty much exactly what Japan's DSi was priced for.

Only in USD. :D

Actually, it's not exactly what it was in Japan, It's a great deal lower.
18 900 Japanese yen = 208.5804 U.S. dollars

However, that's not low enough as it's still not different enough from the DS lite to warrant another purchase.

I don't feel a need for this until something groundbreaking comes out for it. I can wait for the price to drop while I continue to enjoy DS games as well as play Drill Dozer with my GBA slot.

Though I am curious as to how much smaller it is. My DS Lite is a bit bulky in my pocket.

If the DSi doesn't have the hinge crack problem, then it's totally worth it.

If it does have the same hinge crack problem as the DS Lite, then FAIL.

@Bowser

The crack really isn't a tiny problem. Mine cracked, and now the hinge doesn't lock into place like before. May not sound like a big deal, but it's really annoying to have a DS that flops around.

I can attest that the hinge crack can turn into a much bigger problem after just one fateful drop - namely that the entire top falls off. A little superglue though, and it works fine!...mostly.

@Seph: Nintendo admitted it was a manufacturing problem, and they replaced a bunch of DS Lites for free around when they said that, but for example, mine cracked recently and it's been out of warranty for over a year I think, so I can't do anything about it. Really, you don't know how annoying it is until it happens to you. Mine flops around ridiculously and it's impossible to play walking around because the screen tilts back too far, and then apparently the video cable is loose or something because the screen goes blank. I have to hold it up to play. My friend's top screen just fell off completely, but luckily he was able to yell at them enough about his loyalty to Nintendo that they replaced his. Mine isn't in as dire a situation, but if the thing falls apart I will definitely be pissed.

I didn't drop mine but my hinge slowly cracked until the entire screen was hanging on by a small wire.
Nintendo did fix it for free but it came back with the left shoulder button broken. I read it was to do with a certain screw being too tight.

I don't know if the price in $ is more than the ds lite at launch but the production cost can't be much higher for a low quality camera and a standard memory slot. This sort of price seems similar to the psp 2000 which has more expensive components. I'll pass until the next generation.

If you're ashamed of gaming then I advise you should take up a new hobby. This isn't the 1980s; you can clamber out of your basement.

Gosh darn it. Allowing the eyes of others to judge your actions will inevitably inhibit you in your future. Be yourself.

i think 180 is a little too much for a dsi. it should be around 160-170. i mean, there is a lot of new stuff but 180? its a lot for just a portable system. i mean, if they include stuff with it, then 180 would be good. but if its just the system alone with the charger, the price has got to drop.

I think it should be around $125. I mean, it's still less powerful than the PSP. I don't think the great games make it worth $180. But, I guess as long as the DS is better than the psp, I will be fine.

I have bought 4 DS Lites because of the cracking at the hinges. I have used nerf covers to help protect them but they still crack from normal use. I do think the new price is a little too high. Especially since you can't play your old games on the new machine. I am not sure the added stuff is worth the difference.

If they hope to sell it at $180, they're going to have to explain why it's so great. I've yet to hear anything that convinces me that it's worth the upgrade.

I've bought a total of 3 "phat" and 2 Lite DSes, for myself and as gifts for family. One of the phats got a cracked hinge but both Lites have been fine.

As for the DSi.... what new features really justify an extra 50 bucks? 2 cell phone cameras from 2002? A buck or two each at most. A quarter gig of flash? You can't buy anything that small anymore, but if you could, it'd be about a dollar. 8 extra megs of RAM? Well, I just bought a gig of fast RAM for 30 bucks, so do the math, and it doesn't make up for taking away my ability to use my slot 2 flash card's 32MB of RAM for Linux and homebrew. An online store? The DSOrganize homebrew database demonstrates they could have done that with the DS already. And with the possibility of forced online firmware updates locking down the system further, it provides far less value as a general-purpose portable computer than the DS Lite does. But my 14-year-old niece just got her fourth camera and third iPod, so for her demographic (at least those who don't have iPhones or iPod Touches) it's probably a nice little upgrade.

The DSi is a non-starter for me, and would be even if it were $129. I see it as the first sign of a return to the stagnation caused by Nintendo's dominance in the late 80s to early 90s. If its processor, 3D or even battery life were beefed up, I might have been interested, but they're not. I look forward to getting a black DS Lite for 99 bucks when they inevitably drop the price, though.

I'm still using the DS Phat that I got in 2004, maybe I'm just stubborn, but I'm not paying money to just get a barely upgraded system, I won't buy a new handheld until they make a DS that plays all new games, I'm not paying $180, that's $30 more then I paid 5 years ago for the same system.

Hi, long-time reader, first-time poster, just bought a DS Lite a week ago. :-)

It's worth noting that at its current price, the Lite sells like hotcakes. Reason I had to wait until last week to buy my Christmas-present Lite---it was sold out at every major retailer for weeks after Christmas. Zero product in the channel (Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Gamestop, etc). So the demand is there.

Look at the recent rumors about PS3 and 360 price cuts. Nintendo's statement about the Wii: "No, demand is too high. We'll keep the price the same."

So it makes perfect sense to raise the price on the DSi. Adding extra features may be an excuse for Nintendo to get the price more in line with what the market will bear (since people would freak if they took the current model and raised the price $10-$30). Fact is, they underpriced both the Wii and DS Lite, and they know it.

For me, the price is a non-issue since I'm happy with the Lite and wanted the GBA compatibility. ^_^

A GBA Micro costs $60?
Is it not safe to assume then, that the GBA they stuck into the DS is worth around $40?

If that's the case, removing it would lower the cost of the system to $90.

And what else is even left? An SD slot and new Firmware. For double the freaking cost.

But how much do those cost? And are they necessary for a brand new system?

No, since they could have easily released DSWare as a DS-Cart with an SD slot, like most Homebrew carts. The price is still $90 too much.

The only other thing added to my knowledge was the Ram needed for the DS Browser. Problem is, that only costs $20, or less if we're talking about manufacturing costs. $110. Less than the original DS's cost, for sure.

Nintendo is ripping you all off, and I'm not paying for one.

I'd also like to point out that the Blue (L.E.) PSP Bundle costs $170.

Taking out the cost of the Movie ($10), the game ($40), and the Memory Stick ($10),
You'd be getting a PSP for only $110.

$110.

Do you think a DS costs more to produce than a PSP?

actually the bundles are $200. the core system is $170. so take out the goodies, and that's $140. $10 more than the ds lite. so it's pretty much a matter of games preferences rather than price. the dsi would make the psp seem more valuable, but let's face it, the dsi is gonna sell like hotcakes. basically, nintendo gets a new money printer design. woo!

For $180 it doesnt warrant my purchase of one. My Lite works just fine, and the features they added are not life changing or even must-haves..

I say $130-140 to be reasonable, especially when by now the cost to manufacture them is even lower.

I think Nintendo is making a bit too much off the price vs net cost to manufacture these things.
Either way I still wouldnt get one. Its just the same thing, this is honestly Nintendos way to milk the DS line a bit further. I rather they continued with the Lite untill their next handheld gets announced a yr or 2 from now.

I find it odd that most people say the DSi is useless because of homebrew on the DS, most DS owners don't use homebrew at all.

I see the DSi as moving developers and consumers closer to the next generation. Removing the GBA slot so more DS games will be compatable with the DS2 (assuming they do stick with the screen set-up of the DS), getting people more used to using an online store, letting developers learn a bit about developing for the sd card, and seeing whether or not the camera will be useful enough to be put into the next handheld.

I'll probably get one this year if they do cost $180 or less, I was planning on finally getting a Lite this summer since there was no release date for the DSi but if its out by then, I'll get it instead (unless the lite drops in price by $30).

And for me, the DSi value proposition is an epic fail.

Since I'm not rich, I won't be getting this. My 2 year DS Lite is still in working condition; no hing cracks, touch screen is still good, the L shoulder button is a little wonky, but that's the only problem. I was thinking of getting it if it was around 150, but I'm not putting up 180 (probably around 200 for us in Canada) for some minor but interesting upgrades. If it does drop in price, I'll consider it again, but not now.
