Blu-ray has regions like PAL and NTSC but the good thing is that the PS3 can read both of those

Yeah, the PS3 can play both PAL and NTSC ... only if you're playing it from an avi or mpeg file.

I tried playing a region free PAL DVD on an American PS3, and it failed. The reason given was that the PS3 didn't play PAL titles. That's a complete load of cr*p, considering I could play it fine by ripping it to an mpeg file, and then uploading it to the PS3.

Thank god for dvd ripping software. They allow us to actually play legitimately bought titles!

@Dave: I think you missed the point. Blu-ray is supposed to be region free but DVD's are not.

I'm not even sure if that's 100% true but that's what the previous post was telling you.

Whoa, misconceptions.
a) Blu-Ray is not region free. It bears region names of 'A', 'B' and 'C'. Most movies are region locked. There's still a lot of region free ones.
b) PS3 games are region free, but still region coded (A, B, C - just like the movies). That affects online play and DLC you can download.

TL;DR:
DVD, Blu-Ray movies (--usually-- region locked!)

Blu-Ray games (region free, online play limited to the disc's region)

The author needs to check his boxes again. It certainly does say PAL on my boxes. Look at the back of the box, in the sign informing you about the supported display resolutions.

Quick question, how is the Guitar Hero World Tour DLC region locked? I know the DLC from the US store doesnt work with the PAL version but what about different versions from Europe. For example can i use the UK version of the game and download the DLC from the german store?

Would be cool if someone knows the answer. Could save me about 30€.

Question 1:

You can also use a component to VGA cable. Google 'Mayflash'. Mine cost around £25 delivered and im now happily running 720p through my monitor's 2nd input.

BEWARE: You need an existing TV to set this cable up.

Question 3:

Wendy, this is the only fault i tend to get with PS3's. I work for a games retailer in the UK and have only ever had one other fault. It seems to be a problem with the drive/laser diode. I believe sony will sort this for you.

I asked that first question. I'm not sure quite what your answer is, but I went ahead and bought a bunch of cables (at monoprice.com, hellza cheap! HDMI for like ~$5).

The plan is:
for video: Use a HDMI to DVI cable
for sound: Use AVI cables and hook up to an RCA to 3.5mm and hook that up to a 3.5mm female to female and plug the speakers into that! Computer displays don't typically have sound, etc. If it had the AVI cables, I would just use those instead of trippin bout HD lol.

Hopefully the video will work. What you said has me worried but the cables will be here 2mrw and I shall chk it out.

Thanks!

Im not sure about all games, but some games like warhawk and possibly MGS 4 allow you to adjust the screen size in options. I think the majority of games do this automatically though

In regards to the first question. You can buy adapters which remove the HDCP and allows output of DVI or VGA to your monitor. I cant remember the company names but it shouldn't be too hard to find in google.

Same thing happened to me last week. My PS3 just stopped reading any format so I took it apart to see what the problem was (I was about 6 months out of warranty). Turns out my blu-ray drive just died on my and wouldn't spin discs anymore. Now I gotta send mine in :(

Never heard of that problem, but you can use an external hard drive and backup your PS3 in case something like this happens again.

I have a question. Though i know it won't be answered by ps3fanboy itself, i thought maybe it's readers could answer. Is there anywhere one can look to see when home releases new items into the game? Ps3FB doesn't seem to tell you when clothing and items like that get added.

PS3Fanboy:

I have an Emerson bluetooth headset that looks just like the Sony PS3 one. I've connected it, registered the pass key.. all that.

In games like Warhawk, I know you're supposed to hold down the L3 button to talk, yet not only does mine not put my voice through, but it doesn't show the voice symbol by my name in the lobby.

What do I do in order to get this thing to actually communicate? Am I missing some sort of magical step here?

PS3Fanboy: You are wrong on the last question. For SD TVs standards do matter. If you buy a game in North America (NTSC) and try to play it on a PAL SD TV in europe that does not support NTSC the game will have issues. No colors being one of them. I have not seen this first hand. But I have read complaints in european forums.

Yeah PAL and NTSC doesn't matter on HD screens, but on SD screens they will not display correctly. As you say, black and white, flickery.

My games are all labelled BDEU (I think) I've seen some labelled BDUS too, those ones you buy off ebay and can't trade in at your local shop!

why can't I find the movie sites in the PSN store
I have an account in the US, Europe, and Middle East and none of them have a link to the movies,
though i was able to have access to one of them through the add they made in the big screen on the main page,

Note: no there is not a link on top right of the main screen

Is it region locked, cause that would really suck

Yeah, it's region locked. And the store reads your IP, so if you're in Europe, even if you use an American PSN (like I do) you can't access the movie store.

It's a SHAME Europe doesn't have one.

Another PS3 question:

With new DVD/BluRay releases including a Digital copy (Dark Knight), what is the best way to put the digital copy onto my PS3 & then be able to transfer it for playback on my PSP? I own the movie, so I'm not pirating it or anything. I don't own an ipod, I want the movie to be stored on my PS3 hard drive.

Does anybody know?

we'll as far as digital copy goes, you need a computer running windows or mac to use the computer copy. you could transfer the portable copy to your psp through your pc, however the only way to put it on you're ps3's hdd would be to torrent a copyright free version, or stream it out of your computer.

Hey, Colt.

It depends on the format of the digital copy. Drak Knight comes with DRM'd iTunes and Windows Media Player versions of the film. In order to get those to work on the PSP, you'll need to transcode the movie yourself.

Some DVD/Blu-Ray movies from Sony studios come with a DRM'd PSP version -- Krull does, for example. Those require you to attach the PSP to your computer and enter a code to transfer the film directly. Krull is the only movie I have right now that has a PSP copy -- it can be transferred twice to the PSP and a WMP copy can also be transfered twice to a computer.

So far, using Krull as an example, I wasn't too impressed with the transcoding job with the PSP version. On the PSP bright, there was a number of compression artifacts (blocky colors, pixelation around edges, etc.). None of these artifacts were as noticeable on the PSP Slim. Robotech: Shadow Chronicles from the PlayStation video store looks much better. :)

I have a correction for the last question (maybe people won't see it buried down here, but still):

PAL/NTSC does matter, but not if the game supports HD resolutions and your TV supports HD. I imported Buzz Quiz TV from the UK and it plays in 720p, but not in 576i (PAL) because my system is a US system which only can output NTSC. Going the other way of playing an NTSC game on a PAL system.. it might be playable due to some games doing 480p in Europe, but that's something the TV would have to support as well.

As I said though, if the game and TV support HD, you can play any PS3 game worldwide. The games are still regioned though (the globe icon with a number), it's just that the region lock for PS3 games wasn't implemented to restrict playing of the games. Region locks on DVD/BD/PS2/PS1 do block content though.
