DS Daily: 2009: The year of the DS (again)?

While pretty much everyone expected the DS to have another awesome holiday, it was still a surprise when the NPD Group announced that the aging system had broken an all-time one-month sales record in December, beating (everything else, obviously, and) even the Wii.

The DS will have a killer software lineup in 2009, with awesome third-party games and Nintendo releases like Fire Emblem, Rhythm Heaven, and Pokémon Platinum, and will even see the launch of a new hardware configuration, which should boost sales. Do you think the DS's fifth year will turn out to be as successful as its fourth? And will anything outsell Mario Kart this year?

Oh man, I can't wait for Rhythm Heaven. I've played the Japanese version a bit on my friend's DS and it was awesome.

Nah, nothing will out sell Mario Kart, just kidding, but I am beginning to wonder.........

There are alot of big name titles coming out this year that we already know about. Pokemon, Fire Emblem, GTA, Dragon Quest, Phantasy Star Zero. Theres also some that havent even been announced yet. I think this could be a more successful year than 2008.

Again? I only bough 3 games last year and I barely use my DS anymore, I hope that change with the DSi and Pokemon Platinum.

I think platinum will outsell mario kart as long as it has some major differences between diamond and pearl.

Platinum is like the Emerald Game boy one - it has the expanded Battle Frontier area (is what I read). I'll get it so I can get the other starter I don't have.

What about that wifi trading network thing I forgot the name of? Couldn't you just get it off there? O_o

As long as the next installment of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series comes out in the US this year, I'll consider it year of the DS.

Personally, I'm genuinely worried about how the DSi will sell here and the direction Nintendo's future handhelds will go in if it's a smash hit. What would Gunpei Yokoi think?

"Aging" system?

I hope you mean that in the literal sense, and not in the way in which video game journalists call for new hardware every five minutes because they have the attention spans of gnats.

This year is actually probably TOO good for the DS. Three Dragon Quest games all at once? What the hell? And IV only just came out. This is mad.

Painted themselves into a corner there?
What comes after Platinum? Pokemon Uranium (Not for sale in the Middle East)?

my predictions: the dsi will cost too much in the us and will have low sales. 1/3 of the releases of third-party games are from movies and we know how awesome those games are. So yea... don't think this will be the year of the ds... i mean the dsi....

2009 is definitely shaping up to be at least as good as 2008, if not better. There are a lot of quality games already confirmed for NA. The problem is, where will I find the time and money for them all. But I'm not complaining, the more choice the better :)

Only one thing can outsell Mario Kart, and it is MARIO TENNIS!

Nintendo, where is my Mario Tennis?

Pheh we need more DQ Monsters not another Pokemon or DS.
