Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is the cover story for the latest issue of Forbes magazine, and the article's got one helluva quote -- and it's not even from the man himself. While you might balk at the businessman's lack of gaming credentials (read: he doesn't play games), this is the line, written by Forbes itself, that'll cause more than a few raised eyebrows: "EA also teamed with MTV to sell Rock Band, a shameless knockoff of Guitar Hero that added drums, bass and a microphone to the world of make-believe rock stars."
The decidedly negative tone without attribution is uncharacteristic for the magazine, and also feels a bit ... off? We know the Harmonix-RedOctane schism can be a bit confusing, but when the creators of the hit franchise are the ones making Rock Band -- and doing the multi-instrument thing first -- is that really the best choice of words?

How do you call something a knock off when it's better than the original?

Eh, Forbes, Kotnick - say what you want. But the truth is in your actions: Guitar Hero had to play catch-up by adding drums, vocals, and weekly downloads a year later. We see you scrambling under that massive 'Guitar Hero' name you inherited.

I REALLL HATE THIS GUY. He does this all the time. I don't feel like ranting but he's done this before and now he just keeps shooting his mouth open. This guy has no respect. Even if he's pissed about where HMX has gone... he is trashing a company that he is scream they are better then. It makes him look fat, dumb, and disgraceful.

didn't guitar freaks, drum mania and other konami games do ALL this first? guitar freaks on PS2 back in 2000 had multi-instrument gameplay. Neither of these products are 'first'!

It's not a "shameless knockoff" when the people who developed the game changed teams.
Oh and BTW - how's that DLC plan coming along? Not working out too well for you now, is it? Yeah...get to working on that, and then I'll return your calls. Until then, I have more DLC tracks to play while you work on another "20 songs by a band I probably don't think has 20 good songs" game.
Douche.

Sloppy "journalsim" for Forbes. They're usually pretty slick. Has the stink of Activision PR about it. Which is even MORE embarressing.

Actually Forbes of late hasn't been impressing me. I don't read it tons, but it seems like every other story I end up reading by a Forbes writer has glaring mistakes, editorial content from the writer or is poorly sourced. It just feels like the overall integrity and quality of the writing there is steadily declining.

The only 2 things Harmonix has done that can be considered shameless is teaming up with MTV games, and creating RB1.

The sad thing is that GH has become a shameless knockoff of itself.

just clarify how untrue this story is.
Yes Konami had guitar Freak first (Its old and outdated, only had 3 buttons and I barely remember what tunes it played.
RedOctane developed a guitar peripheral, asked Harmonix to developed a game for said guitar, birth of Guitar Hero.
Activision bought RedOctane birth of guitar Hero II.
EA bought Harmonix
(Now it doesn't take a genius to know where this is going. You have 2 rival Publishing company's owning a piece of a successful rhythm game, and since RedOctane originally owns the Guitar Hero franchise EA had to make a new IP) birth of Guitar Hero III (Activision) and Rock Band (EA).
Rest is history.
Did I miss anything?

What about Guitar Hero World Tour's actual shameless knocking off of Rock Band. Oh what's that, Forbes, you forgot about that? Yeah, STFU. Guitar Hero was innovative, and Rock Band took it to another, totally awesome level. Methinks they are just jealous that Rock Band thought of the "full band" experience first.

This is obviously ridiculous and undeserved, but in a way, it's only fair that Rock Band gets is fair share of bad press after all the undeserved bullshit that gets dumped on the Guitar Hero name by the media.

Also, you guys are all fucking morons. Guitar Hero does everything right that Rock Band does wrong (which is a lot).

If Rock Band is a shameless knockoff of Guitar Hero, then Guitar Hero is a watered down adaptation of Beatmania.
And DJ Max is the fan-made clone of Beatmania which excels everywhere the parent didn't. Especially in foreign markets. Hint hint.
