In what seems to be one of the most generous packages of the new year, GameStop has listed a new, two-disc Mass Effect re-release due next month that includes the game, a documentary, trailers, music, design galleries and the Bring Down the Sky DLC, all for $19.99. We've contacted BioWare asking for more details, specifically if a deal this delectable is actually allowed to exist.
You know, Mass Effect may not have been the perfect sci-fi opus we were hoping for, but for $20, you'd have to have the heart of a Geth to be able to pass this up. ... And yes, that gag was brought to you by Wikipedia.

If you like RPGs, and especially if you like BioWare RPGs, this is a no-brainer.
It's a rich space opera with fast-paced RPG combat, and a great story/universe. There are some rough edges, like the vehicle driving and repetitive planetary missions, but it is otherwise a very satisfying experience.
I played a friend's copy, but I would definitely pick this up for $20 to have my own.

It's an excellent game. Well worth the money. It's essentially KOTOR with third person tactical combat mechanics and a Star Trek sized chunk of space politics. All in all, whilst the game isn't perfect it's still one of the best-written and most immersive universes in recent gaming memory.

It's a ridiculous steal at 20 beans. This post has me absolutely salivating about the prospect of Mass Effect 2. My gawd, it's the only game ever that I'd consider playing hooky from work to play all day. This is one of my favorite games of all time.

Dear lord, this is completely off topic, but please never let Justin sing in a podcast again....EVER.
I can appreciate the fact that he thinks he may have some slight musical talent, but his guitar skills were terrible, and the voice, well to put it nicely, your cold was doing you a favor. Please never punish us with hearing Justin sign again....ever. Be it a rock band video or just for kicks and giggles.
Justin don't quit your day job, or your night job. Or whatever it is you do that will keep you from having to sing.

Bought it when it first came out. The controls took some getting used to, with the shooting mechanics and all, but the game overall is pretty. The characters animation etc, put a dagger in the robotic faces of Fallout 3 by far. The story is pretty good as well.
When going in don't expect CoD4 controls, and shotguns own everything. :P

Ooooh, I'd love to see this game come out on the PS3...
I guess I'll just wait until I get that 360. $20 is a damn fine deal, it'll probably be one of the first games I get at that price.

Actually, Bioware can port it where ever they want.
"Sorry folks, this is just another rumor at this stage. Could BioWare make Mass Effect for the PS3 (or the PC, or some other platform) in the future? Yes we could, but we are not working on a PS3 version currently."
That's from 2007. Now that EA own Bioware (and so Mass Effect), a PS3 port is entirely possible. And given that EA aren't known for making exclusives, and given their recent finacial problems, I'd be really suprised if it didn't get a PS3 port sooner or later.
And a PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is even more likely.

mass effect 1-
developed by bioware.
published and rights owned by Microsoft game studios.
bioware was later bought out by EA, therefore EA now controls the development rights to mass effect.
microsoft game studios is still the publisher as of now.
EA and MS have already made some sort of deal regarding mass effect.
i dont see # 2 coming to the ps3.
1 reason:
especially when the character will continue in # 2 and decisions made in # 1 can change mass effect 2. they made us aware to keep our game save files.
2nd reason:
ms game studios
3rd reason:
money
4th reason:
bioshock ps3 sales are in the hundreds of thousands, while 360 bioshock are in the millions. ps3 bioshock released with a discounted price and still cannot sell copies like the $60 360 version did 1.5 years ago.

1) Yeah, a bit of a bummer, but shouldn't stop a port of ME2 from happening. After all, you don't *need* a save file to play the game.
Also, if ME1 got ported to the PS3, then it wouldn't be an issue at all. ^_^
2) Except this re-release here is being published by EA, not Microsoft, syggesting that Microsoft no longer have control over the game. Furthermore, BioWare have said that if they wanted to port to the PS3, they could, suggesting that there are no legal issues to resolve.
3) Yeup, EA want money, which is why I imagine they'd make ME2 multiplatform. When was the last they made an exclusive? And given that Microsoft weren't able to shell out enough money to keep Bioshock exclusive (which is just as big as franchise as ME), I doubt they'd be able to convince EA not to make a port.
4) But it'd be quick and easy to port, as it runs on the UE3, which the PS3 supports. As with Bioshock, a ME1 port would be quick and cheap, and though it wouldn't sell much, it'd still make money (not to mention start building a fanbase for the sequal).
(Also: Bioshock released on the PS3 at full price, not discounted, which is probably part of the reason is sold so poorly. Who'd buy a $60 game for the PS3 when it's like $20 on the 360?)
I'm not saying it'll definately happen, I'm just saying it's possible, and that there aren't really any major reasons to suppose that it won't. Having said that, if a PS3 port of ME1 was gonna happen, I'd have expected it to have been announced by now, so maybe it won't.
And, who knows, maybe Microsoft will pay EA enough to keep the sequal exclusive too.

hyams-
good points too.
a couple of things..
yeah when I said # 3 money that included MS paying EA to keep the game exclusive. we should at least know that if ME2 comes to the ps3 that there will at least be exclusive DLC on the 360 version. this is 1 franchise MS doesnt want to let go and they will pay for it.
ms paying EA 50 million for exclusive rights would probably mean more profit than EA could gather from porting the game to the ps3 and that is the amount ms paid to rockstar for gta DLC only.
and bioshock was never an ms game studios published game and was developed and published by 2k games.
ms has more rights with ME than it did with bioshock.
ME1 sales on the 360 were not that great and EA would be taking a big risk by bringing the game and series to the ps3 platform.
after 2008 EA saw huge losses from multi plat ventures such as mirrors edge and LFD, they may want to change their strategies for their own sake also..

But why would Microsoft shell out money to keep Mass Effect exclusive? It's not really that big a seller - it's more of a medium sized title, and 'only' sold just over 2 million in the year it's been out.
It's not as big a title as, say, Halo, Gears, Fable, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Fallout, LittleBigPlanet, or Metal Gear Solid, all of which are pretty much console defining titles.
It's not a system moving title, and Microsoft won't really gain much from keeping it exclusive; the 360 wouldn't lose any ground at all to the PS3 from this. If they had to choose between shelling out a large ammount of money for it, or just letting it go multiplatform, I'd imagine Microsoft would go for the latter.
Exlcusive DLC would pretty much be a given, though.

hyams- another good point.
maybe ms wants to try and keep as many "good" exclusive franchises as they can.
something to hold over sony.
sony lost tekken, gta, & final fantasy all which have only helped out ms more this gen.
i feel ME2 will sell more copies than ME1 because it is releasing on the same console (same # of fans) + the larger install base now. And i think this $20 package will get even more people on board with the franchise.
bioshock for ps3 did not hurt 360 sales because they already happened.
if ps3 bioshock released when it did for the 360, it would have hurt the sales of the 360 version a bit.
if ms can sell 500,000 more copies of a game due to it being exclusive that is worth a lot of money to them now.

I'm wondering if it will have some juicy Mass Effect 2 tid-bits in there. BTW, I hate it when people re-release games with the DLC on the disc. I generally distrust digital downloads, so when someone goes and does that, I feel compelled to buy that as well.

I totally agree. Mass Effect has to be the most genuinely compelling, epic, and just overall satisfying game I've played this generation with writing and storytelling far above gtaiv, mgs4, fable II or anything else to come out this year.

The story was nowhere near as good as any of the above mentioned games...
I liked Mass Effect quite a big, I was actually more compelled to beat it, and I did finish it, unlike two of teh games you listed.
But the story wasn't really that great of a reason why.
The interactions were what made the game great, not the story.

emph, gotta disagree, the story was incredible. And it had TONS more depth to it than the other games he mentioned.
How many games have as thorough of an encyclopedia as Mass Effect? They detailed everything from why there was no need for ammunition for small arms fire, right to how the FTL drives worked and why they looked the way they did, with the shifting of the visible spectrum.... RIDICULOUSLY in depth. The plot covered the very nature of reality with organic vs inorganic life...but no, go on...what was your point again?
