According to Videogaming247, Jeff Minter's Gridrunner+++ is set to release on the XBLA at the end of April, after a long wait from the Llamasoft developer. In mid December, Minter unabashedly called Microsoft out, telling Eurogamer that Gridrunner+++ had been submitted "months ago" and Microsoft was simply "sitting on it."
For those keeping score at home, Minter previously lamented the slow sales of his original title, Space Giraffe, and was flabbergasted when an XBLA remake of Frogger outsold his first XBLA release by 10 to 1. "OK, we get the message. All you want on that channel is remakes of old, shite arcade games and crap you vaguely remember playing on your Amiga," Minter exclaimed in response to the news of Frogger's success. Thankfully for Minter, Frogger 2 was released months ago and poses no threat to his latest arcade offering. Probably.

I hate when indie developers sing the praises of their games while simultaneously bashing "the corporate machine" and casual games. They just come off as intensely arrogant and whiney. Between this guy and the "Bob's Game" guy, I have had more than enough.

Perhaps if Minter hadn't made a complete pig's ear of Space Giraffe, it would have sold more. That game is a mess - half the time I can't see what kills me, because of the all the crazy crap going on in the background.
I bought Space Giraffe, because I gave Minter the benefit of the doubt. This time, he's going to have to turn out a good game to get my space bucks.

Yeah, I think decades of mescaline abuse and goat fumes have distorted his reality. I too bought Space Giraffe out of pity and was treated to a series of television-induced seizures I have yet to fully recover from. I don't mind difficult games, but making them difficult by having a sick electrocuted clown throw up on my screen every .25 seconds is just dumb.

I hate this douche and I hope this game bombs enough to make him quit developing.

Meh, another shite arcade game for the 'channel'.
Hey Llamasoft, take the rose tinted spectacles off and perhaps try to make a decent game for once.

I love Jeff Minter, and pray at his altar. Even if his recent outings haven't been so great, his classics fueled my childhood.

Hopefully this is an April fool's joke.

Minter is awesome. I played a ton of his stuff during gamings golden age.
While people like to join in the Space Giraffe kick-in, most of those folks never played the game and many who tried it don't understand that it is NOT Tempest. Let the baddies accumulate at the top of your field then run them off for massive points and multipliers. It is a genuinely entertaining game for pick up and play. Pump in your own soundtrack and it gets even better.
I will buy GridRunner++++. I'm thrilled that Jeff didn't let his original XBLA experience turn him away from the platform.

Why Jeff Minter is subject to such abuse is beyond me. He is a thoughtful, intelligent guy who is passionate about gaming. If he is annoyed that Space Giraffe was outsold by Frogger then so what? Anyone with a passion for videogames gets annoyed when generic movie tie-ins or unimaginative sequels outsell innovative and original games - there are plenty of aggrieved fanboys on the internet to prove that point. The same is true of books, movies etc. As the *author* of content that frustration must be magnified tenfold.
Space Giraffe was flawed - no doubt - but the game mechanic was well conceived, just overwhelmed by the psychadelia. Minter has admitted that mistake and the PC version of Space Giraffe has toned the graphics down and made the learning curve much shallower. PC Gamer just gave it 92%.
I'm excited about Gridrunner (and also about Space Invaders Extreme which will use Minter's graphics engine) and I hope it's successful. I also hope that insecure adolescents quit whining about someone who is a little bit different.
