I didn't even need to look at the name(not like I could read it)to know immediately where that red dot is from.

How on earth does he not list "Escape from New York" on the list...

That's where he got the name Snake from, as well as the basis for the character. *cough* Eye patch later on anyone?

Very weird... also I wasn't aware Casino Royal among some of the other films on the list, were made when MGS became the huge hit it was on the PSX and PS2 onward. (I don't count NES)

Ironic as well that most of these films are from Sony studios. *cough*

Go to the site, click on the movie, there is a little square with japanese text and kojimas eyes above.

One google translation later revealed:

"Series is the most influential 007 Metal Gear series. The latest Bond, Daniel Craig of the first film. Cenozoic feel a bond with a modern realism. Credit part of the beginning, MGS3 head back-stage grinning like a trailer! He said."

Casino Royale wasn't around when MGS 3 hit...

To paraphrase Snake: ...What the hell?

Pime Taradox.

Although he could mean Casino Royale with Woody Allen or the one based on the novel.

Well, since it mentions Daniel Craig it must mean the latest one.

Are we sure this isn't just a list of movies that Kojima likes? Or that the store who are selling these at discount didn't just have a huge stack of Casino Royale DVDs and snuck them onto the list?

"Ironic as well that most of these films are from Sony studios. *cough*"

Ironic that you'd use the word without knowing it's meaning, but since you're not bright enough to research your claim I'm not surprised.

Sony Pictures came into existence in 1987 as Columbia. I'm not going to bother pulling up the details on all of them, but only 1/3 of those are 1987 or later and even fewer are Sony flicks. Basically, see that bottom row? Those are the films that MIGHT BE Sony flicks.

Well trebek, since I'm an anal bastard, I decided to look it up. Sony bought Columbia Pictures in 87 (along with TriStar pictures), and MGM in 2005, so Sony owns the distribution rights to more than half of those films. Basically, If you start naming movies at random, it's likely that Sony will own half of them.

However, that doesn't excuse DCD for being a dick.

The name 'Snake' was derived from the word 'Sneak'.

Big Boss has had an eyepatch since the original Metal Gear, it transferred to Snake thematically.

While it might be fine "you don't count the NES", Metal Gear 1 and 2 were on the MSX and had an equal amount of effort put into their design. Hell, most of Metal Gear Solid 1 is refined ideas from Metal Gear 1 and 2 (teleporting ninjas, hind-d battles, etc.).

Who is to say Casino Royale didn't influence him? It came out before Metal Gear Solid 4.

OK, Let's see.

Dawn of The Dead: Crazy soldiers in MGS4 (only played first 2 hours, don't spoil!)

2001: The idea of technology surpassing human intelligence

Children of Men: Rose being pregnant in MGS2??

Die Hard: BAMF Main Character

Blackhawk Down: Middle East setting in MGS4

Predator: Crazy bosses in MGS3?

Full Metal Jacket: "ARE YOU TELLING ME RUSSIA HAS METAL GEAR?"

Bourne Identity: Taking down corrupt government

Heat: Crazy battles at downtown landmarks

Planet of the Apes: Crazy plot twists!!

Haven't seen Goldfinger in a long time, and none of the others.

Predator: Crazy stealth ninja cyborg clearly influenced by crazy stealth alien hunter.

I can see the Bond films in general influencing the key villains throughout all the MGS games. Revolver Ocelot could easily be a bond villain and the woman from MGS3 could be a Bond girl.

I remember thinking of Predator while playing through MGS3 the first time. The whole jungle setting, including the boss battle with the Fear (optic camouflage, jumping from tree to tree, traps everywhere, etc.)

I think Bourne Identity was about being brainwashed to kill and not getting the "Full story" from your commander, since it wasn't Snakes job to take down the Patriots. In fact, the Patriots HELPED Snake (see: Drebin)

Looking for direct concepts/ideas is a bit silly - inspiration can manifest itself in a variety of different ways.

Additionally...

>> Children of Men: Rose being pregnant in MGS2??
MGS2 pre-dates Children of Men by several years

>> Blackhawk Down: Middle East setting in MGS4
Black Hawk Down is set in Africa

>> Full Metal Jacket: "ARE YOU TELLING ME RUSSIA HAS METAL GEAR?"
Full Metal Jacket takes place in Vietnam

The Patriots are maybe like SPECTRE in the Bond films.

Predator probably inspired the stealth camouflage.

You don't really need him to spell out a list of influences since he rips entire scenes and costumes/characters directly from films.

I like the guy but seeing all these older movies AFTER I played his games really cheapens his stuff when you realize how shameless he's been about ripping from famous movies.

I still remember the very first time I saw the MGS1 beta trailer that showed Snake fighting "the Cyborg Ninja" in the offices. Glass walls getting shot out and shattering, pieces of paper sifting through the air... and the first thing that came to mind was, "Man. These guys must have really loved Die Hard." =D

Konami: Ripping off Hollywood since the 1980s (http://www.shamoozal.com/nerdlog/2007/04/11/konami-characters-and-their-80s-counterparts/) and suing companies that make competing dance games for "infringing". LMAO.

That would be a good idea but I don't sell games because often I find myself wanting to come back and play older games. That and I don't like others making a fortune off of my stuff. I do love a good sandwich though. I'm enjoying LBP still and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm is fun (though the damn scroll gathering is tedious as hell).

There is always Farcry 2 and Shadowrun to fall back on though.
