PS3 firmware 2.60 update is now live

Connoisseurs of incremental system updates, to your PS3s! Sony has officially let slip version 2.60 of the PS3 firmware, the details of which we reported earlier today. The update servers are being hammered as of this writing, what with the inability to go online with your PS3 unless it's running the latest system software and all. But once you've got it ... hoo boy. It's going to be a big night for digital photo viewing and cataloging.

Is it one of those where you have to download every previous update in one giant package, even though you only need the 1-2MB of new stuff?
Hooray..
Phantom @ Jan 20th 2009 9:00PM
???
You can never go online unless you have the latest version. This, I believe, is to ensure everyone is on the same page.
slycooper_rocker [psn:slycooper_rocker] @ Jan 20th 2009 9:03PM
it's not actually required. if you have a slow connection, you can just not go online for a few days. after a while, it stops caring. one of my best friends has to do that.
Haggard @ Jan 20th 2009 9:23PM
@Phantom
What I'm saying is that every time you update, it makes you download a gigantic package of every update plus the new one. Even if you only need the new one.
KarlW @ Jan 20th 2009 9:26PM
Unless you haven't updated your PS3 in a while (or bought a new one), in which case you get the very latest software with one update.
Also, if you've ever used a computer, you'll know that combo updates work better than patches. That's true for Windows (slipstream + reinstall), Mac OS (combo updates from Apple's site), and possibly Linux (don't use it much, don't know)

you know you can download the updates on your PC from Playstation.com a couple days after it releases right? you can then install it on the PS3 using any USB flash drive or memory card. you just have to place it in a folder called "\PS3\UPDATE" in the root directory.
and i hate these large updates because of my slow connection. i was gonna play Resistance 2 online some more tonight, but now this update will be going until i loose interest. oh well, 360 it is tonight.
eNrique @ Jan 21st 2009 1:07AM
Well, at least it's not one of those updates that take around 200 days to actually come out or one one of those that took like 5 Mb and do nothing.
Tiptup300 @ Jan 21st 2009 1:44AM
you people aren't hearing what he's saying.
The 360 updates with patches, so the updates are small and only include what they need.
Sony took the lazy route and just wipes the firmware clean and replaces the entire thing with an entire new one.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jan 20th 2009 9:01PM
downloaded!! photo thing is basically a wii photo channel clone. but meh i could careless about that back to some COD WAW

Premature ejaculation man @ Jan 20th 2009 9:09PM
Why do these updates take so long? When I went to my friend's house I was surprised by the time it took to update.
Is there a reason?
Longhorn4Life @ Jan 20th 2009 9:17PM
WTF mine lasted under a minute and here i was going to wait till tomorrow to download because of your comment...>:[
Tez @ Jan 20th 2009 9:51PM
Mine downloaded in about 10 minutes. Probably has something to do with location.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Jan 21st 2009 12:11AM
some people have slower connections. i have to use satellite internet myself, which means this thing will be downloading for at least an hour and a half.....maybe two.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jan 21st 2009 2:40AM
I'm talking high speed internet. Or does it only apply to major updates?
Heyyou27 @ Jan 20th 2009 9:10PM
I started it like an hour ago and just went to try the update out. When I turned my PS3 on it told me that the update had failed and asked if I wanted to try and update it again.
Heyyou27 @ Jan 20th 2009 10:20PM
Well, second time is a charm; now I just have to download the Photo Gallery.
lee @ Jan 20th 2009 9:12PM
its cause millions of people all at once are downloading at the same time, if you want a fast download speed give it a day or two until most people have downloaded it
kavendano14 @ Jan 20th 2009 9:28PM
