An inside source has informed IGN that Sega of America laid off 30 employees today. We've followed up with the publisher, but calls, emails and IMs for confirmation (even about unrelated stories) have been met with an eerie silence.
We'll certainly update when more information becomes available.

This better not interfere with my hope to get a new Daytona USA game...

Hopefully it was only the people who approved either the Sammy merger or Sonic Unleashed

I really enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2: battle.
I think the problem with the new sonic games isn't the 3-D. Its...everything else...

I've never understood the love Sonic Adventure 2 Battle gets around here, though I do think that there is a way to do 3D Sonic right. The daytime levels in Sonic Unleashed got kinda close, but it wasn't about exploration as much as it was about timing and quick reactions - I like games like that too, since the handheld Sonic games are some of my favorites, but I'd love to see a Sonic game in 3D (or 2D) that feels more like the older titles.

Unleashed was awful, bro, and I'm not saying that because 'its the cool thing to do' so please don't even suggest that. I was anticipating the game like no other and it just ended up disappointing the hell outta me. Keep in mind I only own the two worst systems to own the game on (the Wii version is pathetic and the PS3 version has a horrible framerate), but I've beaten it on both systems (borrowed a friend's PS3 version, better and more daytime levels than the Wii version but with a bad framerate), and both were pretty meh.

- so before you go saying I don't know what I'm talking about, you can at least check my opinion on the game and see that I actually, you know, played it.

You don't need to get so prepare, I'm not gonna flame you, but that doesn't change my opinion of the game though.

I wasn't really expecting a flame, I'm just confrazzled. How anyone could like that game is beyond me.

"And I'm probably the only person on the planet that would like to see a Knuckles game that plays like the night stages."
Needs moar glide and less stretch
and controls that don't make me cry
and level design and music that aren't terribly bland and boring
that's when I'd back a Knuckles game that played like that, but yeah, it'd be pretty cool

Yeah, but why have Knuckles or Tails when you can have Marine or Chip? WOTCHER, SONIC! RIPPER!

I hope that's rabid froth from that hedgehog and not what I think it is.

-What do you call Sega laying off 30 employees?
-A good start!
HAR HAR, C WUT I DID THAR?
Let's all hope these thirty were responsible for making shitty Sonic sequels and that SEGA will now make sequel to some games that people actually care about. Shenmue III for example.

Shenmue is part of the reason why Sega's in this shape to begin with, I don't think they're going to go there again.

If this is true, I hope former Ziff/EGM/1UP staffer Jennifer Tsao isn't affected. She seemed excited by the new opportunity at SEGA, and to have dodged the 1UP implosion. It would be a shame to hear of yet another of my favorite folks from that group getting the axe.

If SEGA only had to lay off 30 employees instead of closing a studio like other companies then it's doing pretty well from themselves.

I have been surprised at how well SEGA has managed to stick around and remain *somewhat* relative in the recent years. Here's hoping this isn't the beginning of the end.
