Yeah, because Sony has been in the console video game business since December of 1994 with the original Playstation.

PS1 was a great success and PS2 was a huge success. Sony acts as if no other company is capable of entering a market... like they did when Nintendo and Sega were kings of the console market.

I'm glad they're arrogant... maybe it'll knock them down further. I hate Sony as a company anymore which is too bad considering I used to love Sony when the brand meant innovation and quality instead of arrogance and self-imposed market leadership.

@ Mick

What was the purpose of pointing that out to a bunch of Xbox 360 fanboys? It's a little arrogant for you to presume we need to be reminded of the issue considering many of us, being "fanboys", have probably experienced it firsthand.

As long as Microsoft keeps fixing them free of charge, I don't think people will have a huge issue.

Get over it. RRoD was sooooo 2008.

Remember to BREATHE D Dogg, they didn't kill your mother.

And seriously, I think every company right recently has shown "arrogance" recently. God knows MS has shown it, God knows Sony has shown it, and God knows with their "we've pushed market growth 99%" Nintendo has shown it.

In fact, no company that's entered the market has ever NOT shown it.......if they weren't arrogant about their system, would you by it?

"It's a good console I guess, the other guys do well too"... hmm I don't see that selling systems off the shelf.

It's all to get fanboys stirred up to by more software which will improve the number charts so the company can say "HA HA we sold 1,000 more units, you suck!". The fact that you guys are getting so stirred up about it proves you're falling into their pretty obvious trap. HERE IS A CLUE. NONE OF THE THREE COMPANIES ARE GOING ANYWHERE. ALL OF THEM ARE MAKING MONEY.

Grow up people, and buy all three and enjoy them. If you realized all the software you people miss out on you'd probably cry.

Geez...

Looks like someone needs reminded you don't need to buy all three consoles to not be a fanboy. Do you need to buy all brands of cars to not be a fanboy? How about tvs? Toasters? No. Not to mention, sometimes people don't want to support certain companies as they see them as not being entirely beneficial to the industry they want to support, in this case, Sony. I personally will not give a cent to Sony until they change - and I thought that was happening but the last few months Sony has started to return to why I stopped buying their products.

As to none of the three going anywhere? Sega fans said the same thing. Sony fans for that matter were convinced that Sony would remain on top, as if previous performance dictated future success, hows third place feeling now? ;*(

@D dogg

Wait wait wait.....so are you saying that Microsoft........once again, I will repeat the name, MICROSOFT......isn't arrogant and has never created self-imposed market leadership?

I'm not saying you have to like Sony but I find it odd you embrace a company that has blatantly committed actions of which you seem to detest.

@OrionnoirO

What has Sony done to "wrong" the industry? If you ask me MS has hurt more than just the gaming industry but the consumer market. They have shown people have no issue paying a premium for a machine that is known to break not just once and here and there but MANY times and at a great percentage.

I know I'm on a fanboy site and I really have no issue that you do prefer the xbox over the playstation. However to not acknowledge that MS has issues too is just short sited, even for a fanboy.

Lacking longevity huh?

The 360's price is going to continue to go do and beat PS3 on price point every year, just like the PS2 beat the original XB.

The 360 is making third party publishers VERY happy right now.

Xbox Live is unmatched.

Microsoft is adding hardware to their consoles without increasing it's price... Sony is taking hardware out of their consoles to decrease price.

I wonder who'll be around in 2-3 more years.

Don't read too much into it... for every statement from Sony, there is a similar statement from Microsoft and Nintendo about their product.

These types of comments have absolutely no affect on sales, so I don't follow you when you state that he made this statement in defense of the PS3's current standing in global sales.

Look at the entire picture. Don't focus on one tiny detail like PR comments that are trivial.

Sony's other two consoles had only been available for five/six years before the next generation, so I don't think he has much to say. Besides, the 360 is only MS's second console. Can judge by that much. :\

OK. So the PS2 came out what, 8 years ago? It's still selling well, right? And the software too? It's still selling VERY well? So there's no chance that, 2 short years from now it won't be selling well? That there won't be any new releases on it? With an install base of about 140 million units (I have one, and a 360 AND a PS3 and I still regularly play my PS2) I can't imagine it being supported for LESS than 10 years!!! So yes, the effective life of the PlayStation can (and often is) 10 years.

That wasn't the point. Sony effectively abandoned their own console, while others haven't, because they felt a need to make something better. If they had such confidence in their system, which I'm not doubting they do, then they wouldn't have rushed the PS3. I've owned every Sony console, I have a PS3. I'm not bashing them or anything, just stating facts. The PS3 was rushed. That's why the PS2 outsells, and why companies aren't as eager to develop for the PS3 as they are for the 360.

Who DOESNT want hardware to last at least ten years?

In our current economy (read: not too good) I'd love for my purchase to last as long as the PS2 has. There are people that don't jump the gun and buy the 'next-best-thing' right when it becomes available at retail.

While Hirai's statement can be challenged by the current state of the 'console war', it is nonetheless sound as a rock.

Just because a product such as the PS3 can last 10 years, that does not mean the 'PS4' won't be out at year 5 or 6. There are SO many people still with a PS2 who are still on the fence.

The PS2 is still managing to make surprising sales numbers (it's been slowly declining recently). When the 'PS4' DOES come out, and Sony doesn't botch their launch, you can surely expect the PS3 to behave in a similar manner as the PS2 is currently doing (although, not to the same extent).

No one is making you like alternative sources of entertainment, but not acknowledging them is the ultimate practice of being a tool / product loyalist / or fanboy.

Anywho, I agree with you to some degree about the PS2. I wouldn't say that they 'NEED' to keep it in production but rather that they are keeping it in production because... well... they're making money off of it.

It would be a rather odd sight seeing any company dismiss a product that was still bringing in loads of revenue.

And I am happy every day that I did not get a PS3. They have one game that I would want to play. Everything else comes out for Xbox, and I would rather have it for Xbox because of how great LIVE is. Not to mention how addictive achievements are, they make a game last longer just by challenging you.

I'm not trying to start an argument with you but I'd like to point out something:

"Everything else comes out for Xbox, and I would rather have it for Xbox because of how great LIVE is."

Why is the LIVE service inherently superior to PSN? I've seen so many people state this, but I fail to see the logic in it.

Discuss.

No, its fine. I dont care, I will not fight about it...lol, but be prepared for others to start in on it too. I just love LIVE, it has so much to offer. A lot of things PSN and LIVE do have in common. We normally get demos a bit ahead of PSN, but that is fine. But LIVE has so much to offer including demos, great XBLA games, movies both free and not free, trailers, free content like themes and gamerpics, parties, the opportunity to quite often play with actual game devs, and a lot more. And I do realize that PSN has a lot of the same. The biggest difference with them to me is just the sheer number of how many people are on LIVE. I can go back and play a game that has been out for years and still find people playing it online. Plus a big thing for me is that all Xbox systems come with a headset for online use. So people will actually talk a lot with you while you play strangers, its a great way to make friends. I know PSN takes LIVE when it comes to how many people can play a match online. Like resistence 2 being able to have 60+ people playing one match. Thats cool, and outstanding. But personally I would never want to play any game with 60 people on one map. It just seems like a cluster F*ck and would take fun out of the game. But thats just my opinion. The biggest thing in PSN's favor to me is that it is free. But I have seen the Playstations setup online and I hate it. I am talking about the setup of the Playstation, not the quality of PS online like playing games. I just mean the look. I think it is great that PS is free online and especially that it has WiFi built in. The WiFi is something I really hope that someday Xbox includes in the system at purchase. I mean the damn Wii even has it built in. But no matter what I would gladly pay $60 or so a year for LIVE over PSN being free. I would honestly pay more if I had to without thinking about it.

but also all that being said, I do not care an ounce about Blue Ray. I think it will not end up being the be all end all of DVD. I think that people will do what I did, by a upconvert DVD player for physical movies. And in the long run HD movie downloads will be the main thing for HD movies. Kind of like Itunes for music. I am just waiting for a huge selection of downloadable or streaming HD movies to come out on a mass front through an online service.

But I had to talk myself out of buying a PS3 simply for MGS4. I was gonna buy one, beat MGS4, and then sell it on eBay. I am a huge fan of MGS. I never owned a original Xbox. I hated the controller. I started out with my first game at home being Pong. Moved up to Nintendo, Super Nintendo, then jumped head first into PS1 and I loved my PS2. Never planned on buying a 360 but buying a PS3. But that price tag at launch was ridiculous, so I switched to Xbox 360. And I love it. I would make love to it if it had a peripheral for it!!! lol

The 360 has been on the market a year longer than the PS3 and is still wiping the floor with it.

His reference to the original XBOX is pretty funny considering MS got into last gen late and started this gen early. It wasn't about a lack of longevity but a strategic business move, which has paid off.

well of course MS hasnt had a console last more than 4-5 years. that was their first one, released after other consoles were on the market. MS has already stated they intend to support the 360 one day longer than Sony supports the PS3, so he can take his "longevity" and shove it.

Just look at the 360 now. Its has more better games, Steals more exclusives from sony,Has better graphics(just look att some comperisons) the 360gpu is better. Even if papper says otherwise.

So the 360 is better choice. Even if Sony says that the ps3 will be here for 10 years and MS releases a new one every 5 years only means that Sony are affraid.

The next box that comes within in 3 years will murder the PS3 even more then the 360 already does now. Someone once said "All i can see is Sonyfanboys run in fear"

I will not buy a PS3 until hardware PS2 emulation is put back in. I don't want to buy a used one on eBay. I realize the 360 has SW emulation for the original Xbox but at least its there and works well for most games.

It would be silly for Sony not to do so with so many people on the fence on what console to purchase. HOWEVER: Until the PS2 is discontinued and/or the PS3 picks back up in sales, PS2 games will NOT be available on the Store.

Yeah, to be honest I rarely use my PS/PS2 BC.

For me, longevity isn't much of an issue. I guess a lot of people want many years of support for their console, but it would really suck if PS2 level graphics were still the norm. That is, if PS2 had had 'longevity' of ten years.

But that's not how it works. Progress progresses, and I want my games to look much better in the future.

So what that Sony geezer is saying:

1) PS3 has lost us 4 billion already
2) Economy is in the toilet
3) Sony cannot afford another PS3-level 'success'
4) Hence, PS3 better be enough for gamers for the next 8-9 years
5) Calling it 'longevity' makes this positive somehow

Sony have longevity purely as many people bought a PS3 and haven't bought many games. What, 2 must haves so far being MGS4 and LBP. Killzone coming.

So at this rate, in 10 years they might total say, 20 must have games?

But yeah, as someone said earlier, for every Sony statement, MS and Nintendo come back with one. Its like watching one constant dick comparing contest.
