And by big, we don't mean his chest size.
Naughty Dog's Uncharted made quite an impression when it debuted on PS3 in 2007. Nathan Drake was an incredibly likable character that resonated quite well with critics and gamers alike. "I think people like him because he's compelling, and a much needed breath of fresh air in an industry that's been a bit stale for a while, in terms of characters," Bruce Straley told CVG.
When asked if Drake will ever be as popular as Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, he responded: "Why, do you think he's not already there, if not beyond that point already, in terms of popularity?" The lackluster sales of Lara's latest may suggest that gamers have found a new, better hero to raid tombs with.

Yes it's easily true Nathan Drake is new Lara Croft, but a tad ugly imo. Hmmm..... I don't know why...

Wow.... just wow. I can't look at that picture without cringing a little.
I do think he might need a few more games under his belt and booty shorts, which thank the maker he doesn't use in games, to be as popular as Mrs. Croft. Is he on his way? Yes.

Oh man, how could a character as stale and generic as Laura Croft be surpassed?
It must have been done by character only more generic and stale!

lara croft is so last century. I think anything is better than Lara. Nate should be compared to gears of war or something.

Lara Croft is still bigger than Dake, when Uncharted sells 10 million copies on one game then I would say he has a chance. But right now hes not even close.

They are talking about current poplularity and not the past.
Lara Croft is more widely known among gamers, but that doesn't make her popular.
This gen i would think that Nathan Drake is more popular.
PS: what do you expect them to respond on a question like that? Ofcourse he should talk positive about the game he is creating.

The character Nathan Drake itself is based on the imperfectivness & realism of man. Like PoP....

Lara Croft is somewhat a household name because of the movies. Also, the fact that she's a fairly old character.
Nathan Drake has a ways to go to even come close to her popularity. He has one game. The dev is obviously being bias.
There needs to be an Uncharted movie starring Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake. No auditioning needed.

Nathan Drake was an incredibly likable character ????
O_o
I just have a very vague memory of the game
(only the demo, and no more than 3' after the intro)
and I remember the guy and the girl in a plane or something.. and was like watching a cliche of a cliche of a generic American action film.
but you know...
maybe is me, that I found likable characters like prince (katamary damaci) or ratchet & clank, etc
even the soldiers of bad company are something more interesting ...

Your opinion is moot if all you have played is the demo.

Sometimes I wonder why people even bother typing here. "I saw the intro in the demo and therefore formed an opinion about the storyline and characters".
You, sir, are retarded.

On the other hand, I played through more of Uncharted than I did the last Tomb Raider.
I am finding the Saints Row 2 gang far far more memorable than either of them at the moment.
And lastly, that picture... sucks.

I'm not surprised.
Lara has been getting smaller and smaller with each new game.
I don't think the next Tomb Raider game should have her or anyone from the previous games' characters.

wow... how can a developer be so damn smug and pretentious? Uncharted might have been a great game, but I really, REALLY would have liked to see that game come to life without the trillion of Tomb Raider's before it.

You're assuming the creators of Uncharted were inspired by Tomb Raider, which isn't necessarily the case. Gamers too often compare new games to existing ones, because it's easier to relate to a game can shove in an existing category. (example: shooter XYZ is like Gears of War, action adventure XYZ is like God of War, etc).
Uncharted in some ways is like Tomb Raider, but in other ways it isn't. I personally never enjoyed Tomb Raider combat.
I hate how Laura could take repeated shot gun blasts at point blank range and still down 7+ people with her 9mms. It's like those boobs are Bullet Proof. The combat in the game is too "run and gun" for my taste. I prefer Uncharted, you take a couple of shots and you're swimming with the fishes and you actually have to use cover and tactics to survive.
To be fair, Uncharted pirates took a bit much to down in turn, but headshots always works. One shot, one kill.

It's not about comparing games, but Tomb Raider help built a genre. It's like denying the importance the original Final Fantasy had to RPGs.
You are also comparing game mechanics of a game from the 90's to one released last year. I'm not saying that when you look at it in depth they are the same, but the first thing I, and pretty much everyone I know, said when we saw Uncharted was "Tomb Raider with a dude..." That's because that "Modern Action Adventure" was defined by Tomb Raider back in 1996.

The guys here all seem a little oversensitive about the picture, but I'm secure enough in my masculinity to say that it's a pretty cool image. Why? Because it underlines the fact that Lara Croft's clothing is utterly ridiculous, maintained only for sex appeal, and that female gamers might want a male character to have to go through that sort of humiliation for their enjoyment, too.
The picture makes a solid point. The outfit looks stupid and exploitive on Drake, so why should Croft have to wear it?
Come on guys- Let's be fair. Women in video games are usually scantily clad, with large boobs, and put into exploitive poses. And then we wonder why female gamers are so rare?
There need to be more cheesecake images of guys for the ladies (and others so inclined) if we're going to continue to ask "why isn't my girlfriend/wife interested in gaming?" -- They're not interested because they see Lara Croft and they think the games are sexist and piggish.
Give them some half-naked beefcake, and we'll see a change in that attitude.
And no, gender-neutral anime boys don't count, nor do Conan or Kratos. I'm talking about stuff that appeals to NORMAL women, not anime fans, and not fantasy geeks.
That picture up there? That's the reality of the situation, thrown in your male gamer face to remind you that the industry is almost entirely sexist.
You may like it that way, but it doesn't make Lara Croft's outfits any less tacky.

"Lara Croft sexy to boys. Nathan Drake sexy to girls. Boys shut up! Girls like picture! Girls get sexy game dude too! Guys not complain!"
Or do you need that in text-message language to truly understand it?

Doesn't matter who raids tombs really. I think the only problem was that Lara isn't 1 person. Its pretty clear that as the series went on Lara transformed numerous times. And that got kind off annoying. That and the over the top character not really having any believable place. No one could really relate to her unless you were a beautiful rich girl who did whatever the hell she wanted.
