Dear Game Marketing Honchos,
Those suits are looking mighty sharp. Really, we appreciate a well-tailored $3000 suit and we're a little jealous. Anyway, um, these countdown pages? Sorry, but it's a little played out. How do we put this in relative terms? It's tired like a two-button jacket and square-toe shoes. Case in point: the latest ones by Square Enix for Final Fantasy XIII. Especially when the company claims it's "the first of many countdowns to come."
We understand that by writing about this, we're playing right into the manicured hands of those who unleashed another countdown on the internet (it's Final Fantasy XIII -- how could we not?), but placing the tiniest bit more effort into trying something new would be much appreciated.
xoxo,
Joystiq

Now remember, one man's too much information is another man's too little information, TLI. And another man's JEI, just enough information.

This is actually extremely exciting and significant, because this is the NORTH AMERICAN FFXIII website. We may get details on a more specific release date/...year...
Oh, and it has both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 logos on the page, nice... and Xbox Live for what it's worth.

According to http://release.square-enix.com/news/j/2009/01/20090119_01.html
There will be a special JPN PS3 launching with the Advent Children Complete Blu-Ray edition that has the FFXIII demo on 4/16/09.
It will be a 160GB "Cloud Black" and cost 49,980 yen ($558)
You can also something called FINAL FANTASY XIIIćTrial Version Set for 5,900 yen ($65). It's probably the demo + the movie
And something else for 4,900 yen ($55) which is probably just the movie alone

How about a count-up to remind us how long we've been waiting since the game was announced?

Probably a countdown till they tell NA(North America) that Microsoft paid them enough money to rush it out this year.

Good God, talk about tone deaf on the part of Square.
Nobody wants to see screenshots of a Final Fantasy game. We know what those look like. Some of us have been looking at them for 20 years. Video? A few more people might care. Maybe.
About the only way a countdown (retch) could possibly be worth the effort is if, upon reaching 0:00:00, it links to a) a press release announcing the surprise early release of the game or b) Rickroll.

If you right click on the SWF shell and hit play it loads an flv trailer.
http://na.square-enix.com/ff13/_flv/ff13-trailer-sd.flv
assuming there is an hd one as well since it has a button for an hd version. Both videos return 404 right now.
