Sega's mysterious countdown still has about two days to go, but Japanese mag Famitsu has already spilled the beans on what the publisher is planning to reveal. Pole's Big Adventure is a satire of the 8-bit platforming era, developed by Phantasy Star Universe producer Takao Miyoshi. According to IGN, there willl be over 100 hidden gags in the game. For example, eat enough mushroom powerups and your character will grow beyond the size of the screen.
No word on a stateside release yet, but it's set to debut in Japan on February 3rd for 500 Wii points. Oh, and feel free to visit the countdown if you're bored. The mushroom now makes noises. Awesome!

Made developers realize that some people (like me) will still buy 2-D platformers.
This game sounds all right, so long as there's actual good gameplay on top of the gags, but where's my 16-bit styled Sonic the Hedgehog 4 at, Sega?

Those are both great games, but they'll never be any newer than they were in 1994.

neither will a new 2D Sonic, yet people still pine for that hoping it will revitalize the series. The only exception: Sonic Rush, which wasn't even Sonic Team

As amazing as Sonic CD is, I always considered that to be an alternate Sonic 2. As for Sonic and Knuckles, well, seeing as how that was meant to still be part of Sonic 3, I wouldn't quite consider it to be Sonic 4.
When it comes to Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush, like them or not, I don't think anyone would try and say they had the same "feel" as the Genesis titles. That's not to say that any new game could emulate that same feel, even if it was done in the Genesis style, but I'd still like to see someone give it a shot, if only to see short stubby Sonic again.

Adding a 4 to the name Sonic is not gonna make the any better neither is adding the number 3 to Adventure.
I rather have them screw any new games they want than Tarnish the record of Classics.

Woo for Master System style 8 bit homages! It had to happen eventually, considering we've had the NES style Mega Man 9 and getting the Atari 2600 style Bit.Trip Beat soon.

If you guys want satire, check out IWBTG:

To give you an idea, you have to fight a giant pixellated Mike Tyson that breathes fire.. it's awesome.
I'm making a similar game. Just finished a part where you go up through clouds to "coin heaven" from Mario 3, complete with ripped Super Mario All-Stars graphics.. the second screen of the 2-screen coin heaven area is a bullet hell, except the bullets are coins that kill you XD
It'll never get it finished I'm sure.
I'm super pumped about this though, I'm a huge fan of both the 8-bit era and game satire within games. Can't wait!

I think from the current opinion on recent Sonic titles they're best resting him for the moment. Give it a few more years, 2 at the least, so the fans and critics alike will be more receptive and nostalgic for a new proper 2d title. Instead Sega should give their older mascots, Opa-Opa and Alex Kidd some time in the limelight.
