Sony is reportedly planning to announce details of a restructuring scheme soon, confirming its first operating loss in 14 years. According to previous reports, the manufacture consider closing plants and, possibly, whole divisions.
According to the Financial Times, Sony CEO Howard Stringer is facing serious resistance from the 'old guard' in Japan to fix (or save, depending on your perspective) the company. Certainly one of the more interesting pieces coming out of the alleged plan is Stringer's goal to shift Sony's focus from hardware to software. If true, the PlayStation brand, along with Sony Computer Entertainment, would presumably be the main benefactors of such an upheaval.

So let me get this straight, Howard wants to make more software, and Japan just wants to make more boasts about what you'll do to get one?

@gundam
Since you seem to love using the phrase so much, I think you should understand something: everyone isn't acting with a holier-than-thou attitude; we're all just better than you.
You're a pissant fanboy so obsessed with console brand names that you can't seem to talk about anything else, with a view so slanted it's pushing a schizophrenic break from reality. We're gamers and most of us can appreciate good qualities of games even if we don't like them as a whole, to say nothing of the system that said games are on.
The fact that you keep getting banned and keep coming back to continue your absurd jihad against a company for apparently no other reason than owning a competing product is proof of just how ridiculous you are. I believe the proper term is "clown shoes".

Thank you GWEW. I appreciate people like you sometimes. It helps me realize how ridiculous one can look without a sense of moderation.
Anyway, I'm proud of your resistance as an employee of Best Buy to overpriced pieces of crap. I'm sure it takes a lot of courage to direct customers looking for memory, hard drives, and video cards to Newegg, where they can get it for 1/5 the price. You must also be one kickass sales rep to retain your job as you usher folks away from Monster HDMI and other cables to Monoprice and other reasonable offerings.
Bravo sir. I salute you.

While it's plain to see you don't empathize with others pain, hopefully you will never have to experience for yourself having the pressure of supporting a family and being out of a job and some guy out of the blue making a mockery of it because he doesn't understand it. But I'm sure your full of life experience and self reliance and you can get any job you want, and do so.

Sony being in trouble is not a good thing regardless of your horse in the console race.
Even though they generally price things at a premium, Sony plays a large role in pushing technology and hardware quality forward in many areas of consumer electronics, whether it be game consoles, TVs, or many of the other technologies they have a stake in.

I shouldn't waste my time replying to an obvious moron, but if you really work at Best Buy for a living, then you should be hoping that Sony picks itself up. Let's say a Sony plant in your area gets shut down, and one of those well qualified former employees applies to your Best Buy store because he/she needs some income while hoping for something better to come along. You think that management is going to look at you, who I assume to be a typical retail employee (as I once was)...brash, cocky, pissing off customers because you hate your job and don't need it...then they have this professional applicant who knows how to act...What do you think would happen? You'd be canned and in trouble of making rent! And good luck finding another job, because several other employees would be getting hired around the area. You should hope for Sony to do well as a gamer too, because the competition is good for the industry. You claim that Sony has expensive prices, but meanwhile all the different SKUs means some decent price drops. I for one ponied up and bought the 60 gb SKU pretty close to launch and haven't experienced a single problem with the hardware. The PS2 never gave me a problem either...still runs beautifully actually, and that was a launch system. With some of the multiplatform games out, I'm not a big fan of playing a million different FPS's, so I went with PS3 after Blu-Ray won out. Gotten some great gaming out of it as well, and overall quite satisfied. Also have a Wii, haven't played since Brawl. Used to have the original XBox, sold it after Halo 2 before the 360 emerged.
I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but I don't have a 360, in part because I don't trust the hardware or the Microsoft support team. Talk to the people who have had to pay money out of pocket to repair their consoles. Kind of makes it even, doesn't it? But the success of the 360 also keeps the gaming industry strong. That said, the peripherals are similarly priced to the PS3 and so are the games. Threw a 500 gig hdd in there for the hell of it (I'll probably never come close to going through that), pretty damn good value from where I sit.

GundamWingEW,
You should be very concerned with the "poor little people", because you're one of them (you're just too stupid to know it). What, do you honestly think that working at Best Buy is incredibly secure in a time where entertainment related purchases are grinding to a halt as people prioritize what's actually important in their lives? Your employer is going to get fucking slammed in the coming months as people realize they don't need a bigger HDTV, another Xbox, or a new computer. If Intel, a company that actually makes goods people need, is watching their revenue go down the toilet for the first time in almost two decades, what do you think is going to happen to your company? And when it does happen, expendable peons such as yourself are going to get laid off as it reduces its operating costs. You're then going to find your ability to hock overpriced crap isn't going to open up a wide world of employment opportunities for you.
But, apparently working for Best Buy makes you better than the rest of us. What did you start off at? $10.00 an hour? I worked at a steel plant for 5 months (up until a serious tendon injury crippled my right forearm) and I was pulling in $520-$640 weekly just as a new guy; people frequent this site who earn that amount of money in half a week. Mommy and daddy might be paying for some of your tuition fees, but, like many people, I'm paying for my education out of my own pocket without financial aid from my family. Hell, I paid for my permanent residency when I drove up to be with my then Canadian fiancee (now wife) after I graduated from high school, and that took close to $3,000 in total costs over a two year period.
So go on, continue calling people holier-than-thou elitists, but at the end of the day, you're just a spoiled prick who doesn't have a leg to stand on can't say something intelligent without injecting a near schizophrenic hate for a faceless corporation that couldn't give two shits whether or not you were ever born (kinda like the one you work for, Microsoft, or Nintendo). At the end of the day, the truth of the matter is that most of us are just better than you are.

Yea Sony, focus on that area where you've lost 3 Billion in the last couple years.
Sony makes hardware but wants to be focused on software. MS makes software and wants to be focused on hardware. How about focusing on what you do best?
Wait a second this could be the ultimate merger the ultimate fanboy crusher. Yes I want MicroSony the most devastating Hardware and Software manufacturer in the world!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft wasn't batting around the idea of acquiring Sony. MS and Sony are both making huge plays to be dominant forces in people's living rooms. Though I expect Apple to do it first, an MS/Sony TV with full media center capabilities would be the next smart move, since using video game consoles as trojan horses is obviously failing.

@samfish: Microsoft has a pretty good start in taking over the living room with the Xbox 360, Netflix streaming, and the best of all forms of living room components; Windows Media Center or an HTPC (home theater PC), or if you already have a PC in another room and happen to play the Xbox, the 360 is an official Media Center extender that basically navigates all of your media from your Windows Media Center enabled PC from the 360.
Boy, that was a mouthful.

The problem is that all of those solutions have failed, insofar as they haven't caught on in any meaningful way, for various reasons.
You might have a small handful of geeks and techies who have media centers (I do), but it's waaaaay to advanced for the average person. The media center revolution hasn't kicked off yet, so it's still anybody's ballgame at this point.

huh? if you don't mind, could you tell me where did you pull this information from? because as far as I know, it is the hardware part of the division that is lacking...not the SOFTWARE, which is what this article is talking about.
Actually, although I don't like Stringer, I think that is pretty much the way forward with Sony, right now it is harder for them to make profits of their hardware than software, and Sony has the advantage of having many quality 1st party studios. Not only that, but increase focus on software would also help catching up to the advantages that many users say the 360 has over the PS3.

Yeesh, I love me my Apple products, but I don't see Apple as a serious contender in the living room. The only people I know of who have AppleTV (other then rich fanboys) are older people who have only just become comfortable with the iTunes store as a way to buy media.
I think that younger, more tech-friendly people are still skeptical of locking into any one service, and the market could remain fragmented for a while.

Well MS did say this gen would be about software. Sony needs games theres no question about that and MS need reliable hardware. Hmmm I think I have an idea...

I don't understand how shareholders put up with Stringer. First he kills off all of Sony's robotics research, which was pretty cutting edge and had tremendous potential. Then he suggests Sony should make adjustable bathtubs so extremely obese people can fit in tubs. Now he is thinking of taking Sony out of its core hardware competency to make software. If Sony decides to kill off its Pro and B2B video products that will 100% be the end of the company.

In the defense of adjustable bathtubs, there IS a goldmine of future(and present) morbidly obese. While it doesn't seem like the kind of things to kill robotics over, I can see why he thought it would make a good investment.

I think the writing was on the wall.
It's interesting how MS got their start (and dominate[d]) in software and have released a 'successful' hardware division in the Xbox brand and successfully diversified their market.
Then Sony dominated in hardware for years but has struggled to keep it's head above the water in all of its divisions in recent years with such stiff competition (Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo, Vizio, etc) and is now looking to shrink its hardware business and move into the software realm; Another very tough market with the juggernaut of, yet again, Microsoft.

This is nonsense. Sony software has always been horrible. The only good software they've ever had is what the bought from Sonic Foundry.
