The Orlando Sentinel has confirmed another round of industry layoffs, this time at EA's Tiburon, developers of the top-selling Madden franchise. Despite EA's intentions not to discuss layoffs earlier this week in regards to Warhammer dev Mythic, Craig Hagen – who reportedly handles government affairs for EA – confirmed that layoffs had occurred at the Florida-based studio.
Hagen noted that some reductions at Tiburon were made by freezing open positions, but wouldn't specify how many employees had been laid off or in what sections of the company cuts were made. Approximately 700 people currently work at the flagship sports studio.

Sad news for them, but maybe the smaller staff can focus on making it fun for once.

I suppose it doesn't surprise me. How many staff do you really need to complete a roster update every year?

Tasteless or not, that was the burn of the day right there.

Isn't that a screen from the opening cinematic of Killzone?

This is the first time since the late '90s that I didn't buy any Madden game.
And look what happened!
It will still sell 8 trazillion copies each year, but to me it has gotten terribly stale.

Well it's a good thing EA has a lot of money going towards that Arena Football exclusivity deal considering that league will not have a season this year.

Video game industry: the last one to exit, please turn off the lights.
It's strange that coming from EA, who has several titles coming this year.
Even more strange coming from that division. Anything with "it`s in the game" tag sells pretty well.
Well, hard times

Sales have nothing to do with these layoffs. These people simply arent doing anything. The Madden team needs 5 people. 1 person to update the roster every year. 1 person to decide who is going to be on the cover. 1 to photograph the cover. 1 to design the cover. 1 person to clean the washrooms and make coffee for the other 4.

I had a job at Tiburon years ago when I went to college at Fullsail in Orlando. It's a great facility and being a game tester was a pretty good gig to have. I would imagine most of the layoffs were in the QA & welcome staff.

Do they really need 700 full time staff just to update the roster once per year?

I wasn't aware they had a QA team.

A lot of people didn't play Madden 09. It's the best football game to come out in quite sometime. Better than any 2K football game ever released, and that's pretty much fact.

Well I would hope Madden 09 can outdo the five year old nfl 2k5 from a last gen system. All-Pro doesn't count because it's not an nfl game per se. EA bought off the nfl cause they knew 2k sports was making the better game and selling it for half the price.
EA does some sports like nhl and college football better, but not pro football.

Are you stupid? Madden 09 is a terrible football game. After 20 years they still can't get all the rules right or make a defense that actually knows what it's doing.

Sorry bud, I own Madden NFL 09. I hated the other Maddens and Loved 2k5 and I wouldn't make the jump until this year I gave it a shot.
It STILL sucks. and wtf when will the PS2 version be worse than the PS3 version!? That still blows my mind.

By the way we all know IGN and the other fools give Madden great reviews when its always utter shit. Anyone who has played the new Maddens know it sucks. Some are in denial, for reasons I just cannot grasp.
