If you're a fan of PC games, then of course you've heard of the Source engine. It powers Half-Life 2, which is the bee's knees. Well, an ambitious bunch has decided to use the Source engine to code a new Mario Kart racing game, Mario Kart Source. The best part about this project is that the team is looking at all of the previous games in the series and is attempting to take just the best bits for their new game. Our verdict? Awesome.
Sadly, Nintendo won't likely be as excited to hear about the project, so we're sure they'll step in at some point or another and intervene.

mariokart needed an open explorable world to drive around between levels.

True. The Mother 3 Fan Translation never has any legal interference.

How about Super Smash Kart?
Eh! Eh guys?
Link, Samus, Mario, Kirby, Peach. Plus all the characters we wanted like Geno, Ridley, King K Rool.
But of course have all the Mario Kart characters. A Mario Kart game without Waluigi is scarcely a Mario Kart game at all.

Sometimes it really feels that way just on Mario Kart Wii, man. Kids with their fangled hacks, blasting out turtle shells, stars, bullet Bills in first place... it's a fight the whole bloody race. And ironically fun.

The graphics need some work, but if this can turn out good, then I hope Nintendo doesn't squash it. This would be awesome online.

This is why you never announce your fan project until it is complete. That way it is already out there on the internets before Nintendo slaps you with a Cease and Desist.

I hate to be the disagreeable one here, but if more people with good programming skills spent their time constructively rather than cloning games and violating copyright laws, we'd hopefully see more World of Goos out there instead of an endless DRM/legal action spiral caused by "I can steal your idea, but do it better than you, so its ok" mindsets.
Just my two cents, there already is a Mario Kart out there so invest your time in something else.
