It may not be quite as sweeping as the rumored 15,000 job losses, but Microsoft did reveal today that the company would cut 1,400 positions immediately, with that number increasing to 5,000 by June of 2010. The cuts, expected to save the company $1.5 billion in operating expenses, account for 5.5 percent of its workforce. If you're the sort that likes to see terrible economic events transpire, here's the email chief Steve Ballmer sent to employees today.
There's no word yet on where, specifically, the cuts would come from, but with Microsoft reporting the Xbox division's three percent growth over the previous year, we're hopeful that the games house will make it through unscathed.

Damn this sucks. I was just trying to apply for a position in supply chain management there too. Now doesn't seem to be the best time to graduate on time.

Lol see what I mean? All the personal attacks? Offensive in nature. Yet Joystiq doesn't get all high and mighty on you guys.
Anyways that will never happen to me which I'm glad for.
And yes it's sad when an employee loses a job. Unless they work for a shitty company like sony.
And killjebus stop trying to act like you give a damn about MS or the 360. Do you really think anyone buys that bs?

Is it me or does it seems that if bad news regarding to Microsoft is reported on joystiq, the posters take it as a serious discussion while if Sony is in hot water, people bash the system and dance around as some evil witch has died? Fanboys are so funny since they treat the console wars as politics.

It seems to me that Vista was more or less a failure with consumers. I know that I didn't change my firm over to it like I did with XP back in the day, and I see most people around sticking with XP for their personal computing. Vista just failed to earn consumer trust. It reminds me of the ME failure. Other than that, the economy is effecting everyone out there, including those of us in so called recession proof fields like law. So, people need to not turn this into a MS/360 is failing issue and accept its part of the general economic failures for all selling nonessential items.
killjebus, can you please give the political bs a rest. Is there a need to offend everyone that doesn't have your political views on a non related gaming blog every day? C'mon now. There is a new president, you should be happy with that and not continue to harp on an old subject that 99% of the time has no connection with the people here and their discussions. Oh, BTW, I appreciated the sarcasm in your initial post re Sony/MS and thought it was funny so don't flip out.

I would hope that whoever was responsible for those pointless Seinfeld/Gates ads got the axe in this round.
Ouch for Microsoft, though. They've been pretty recession-proof in past economic downturns, so this is yet another sign of just how pervasive this crisis is.

I see a whole bunch of people missed this part:
"Revenue from its entertainment and devices division, which includes the Xbox 360, rose 3% over the same period a year earlier. Microsoft said holiday Xbox sales were strong, selling a record 6 million game consoles in the quarter"
Somehow I doubt MS is going to be making too many cuts in a growing and profitable division.
Most of these "layoffs" will simply be temporary contractors who will just not get their contracts renewed at the end of their current term. Unfortunately, none of them will be outsourcers in India.

It looks like everyone here is either under 18 or a mindless sheeps.
Economy is god awful right now. Out of those 5,000 job cuts 1,400 of them are gonna happen right away. Sony is not doing any better but in termsd of size Sony covers a huge spectrum in the consumer market so their loses are a lot bigger than Microsoft's.
Instead of acting like ignorant turds you guys should feel bad for those people who are losing their jobs. These are tough times people and I hate to hear about companies cutting jobs. Imagine the faces of those people who have lost their job.

Sure we feel bad, but i find it vaguely irksome that "oh those poor souls" becomes the general topic of discussion in these kind of comment streams, instead of a discussion of the important stuff: what does it mean. I dunno, it bugs me when people are like "no discussion: time for mourning." I don't know how bad it is to be fully unemployed, but i do know it's a bitch looking for work. I'm not unsympathetic, i just don't like getting caught up in the tragedy of it, if it makes us lose sight of the big picture
