Wow, that seems like the perfect combination. A few weeks ago he mentioned having difficulty/asking for help on how to write dialogue in an RPG that would flow/sound natural.

But, it probably wont be out for years, or be completed at all, which makes me sad.

I hope he gets a writer on his team. His reach exceeds his grasp when it comes to prose.

agreed. Braid was an excellent game, but the writing didn't quite stack up to the rest of the package.

"it could be a Pac-Man clone or something"

Well, at least he acknowledges the fact that he makes "clones", since Braid is just a Mario clone on crack.

Having said that, gotta give this Blow fellow props for generating such a huge following. I wouldn't invest money in his Braid title, not until the price drops at least.

"since Braid is just a Mario clone on crack."

Spoken like someone who didn't understand/play the game at all. Or, maybe I'm wrong? Tell me again which Mario game it's a clone of? Which was the Mario game that was a straightforward puzzle game with platformer controls? I missed that one...

Ok, let's see aside from adding a new "gameplay" enhancement (time manipulation) and a "handdrawn" art style, it's basically a clone of pretty much any sidescoller Mario.

The bad guys that I saw looked like Goombas and Bullet Bills, there's the little "Princess is in another castle" bit at the end of the level, your character runs and jumps, much like Mario (of course, there's the time manipulation, so one distinct difference), even some of the level names are taken from Mario's legacy, such as Jumpman.

Obviously if you don't see that Braid is a clone of Mario, you haven't played any Mario sidescrollers.

But the most important thing is, I didn't say that being a Mario clone was a bad thing, if you're going to try and be a great sidescroller, may as well emulate the best there is (Mario). Also, I wasn't trying to be overally critical of Jon Blow, he obviously created a large fan following for his one game, so props to him.

Now, I should also say to AoE, that every sidescrolling Mario offers puzzle elements... but like you said, you probably just missed it.

And to themissing, well, you're just a troll, so whatev.

So... you haven't played it then. Or rather, by your logic, if we distill it down to it's simplest point... really the Mario Titles are just a ripoff of Moon Patrol, the first game to feature parallax scrolling. I mean they may have added a few features, but really that's all they are at the end of the day. Do you see the flaw in your logic yet? At the very least, even if you don't see a flaw in the logic, there is a flaw in your conclusion... which is that Mario was not the first platformer.

Here's the deal dude, every single thing in human existence is built upon previous achievements/knowledge. The bits of Braid that you dismiss prove that you never really played the game (farting around in it for half an hour doesn't count, solving at least a few of the puzzles from each and every level does); more importantly though, those bits that you dismiss are the core, the bulk of the gameplay; not to mention the VERY bits that make it such a distinct game!

Calling Braid a sidescroller is like calling OutRun 2 a racing game. Yes, I realize it LOOKS like a platformer, and it even controls like one... but it's a puzzle game. Additionally, and again if you'd taken the time to really play the game you'd know this, the allusions to Mario in the story (the princess is in another castle) are intentional, because the main character is in fact a gamer; the game itself is a metaphor.

You guys aren't very bright. I said, in my original post, that I wouldn't invest money in Braid unless the price drops... that pretty much sums up the fact that, beyond the demo, I haven't played it. My opinions are based on the demo. Is that really too difficult to understand?

And besides, my point for the post was to point out the fact that even Jonathan Blow admits to making clones of games (in his case, a clone of Pac Man) and I made the observation, that Braid is a Mario clone. Anyone with half a brain can see the obvious similarities between a Mario game and Braid. AoE does make a valid point about how that could apply to pretty much else.

And that's why you're a moron! =D

"Oh. You run and jump. It must be a clone of every other game out there! The entire detail of this game is to run and jump to the next level!"

WRONG. The entire point of this game is to understand a bond that isn't meant to be. This game is so far complex compared to Mario it's not even funny. The puzzles of this game are amazing, and that is what seperates it from Mario.

Mario's objective:

Run and jump to the end of the level to find a princess.

Braid's objective:

Collect pieces of his memories to understand the meaning to why he is doing this and if it is meant to be.

Alex.. there is really no way to understand Braid and accept the fact that it is more than a Mario clone unless you play the entire game from the start to finish. Platforming is a simple genre of gaming that can not be considered copying. J. Blow put references to Mario because it would be a reminiscent of how games of this genre have evolved.

If he can pull off an experience that is as unique as Braid is in RPG form, more power to him. I would most definitely give him money for more high-end indie game content.

When I first played Braid in the demo it seemed to be a total mario clone. But, after winning Braid from the VGA promo I learned it was way different then what I expected. It's a great game, has alot of Mario elements, and yes, a little over priced.

Why not work on something that is proven successful like new puzzles for Braid in either a separate title or DLC for the existing one?

As for the price comments, I got more entertainment out of my $15 than anywhere else for the same price (movies, restaurants, bars, etc.)

No kidding.

Take all the hours you played it and then replayed it.
Add in all the satisfaction after completing a puzzle on your own.
Add in the real beauty of the game, its unique presentation, and a simple new mechanic (spun 6 different ways).
And you've got a real great game.
Divide all that by 15$ and you're spending maybe a dime for an hour's worth of solid entertainment.

Overpriced? Well priced if you ask me. Compared to all the shitty games on XBLA, this is easily worh paying 1200 ms $ for. Im using Braid to try to get my wii and ps3 fanboy friends to buy an 360. Cant put a price on that!

As for Blow making a 2d RPG? Sounds incredible if you ask me. Could be a intelligent clone of any game. The 2d RPG genre is awating a really good game.

What about Blow saying he would make any more games for the xbox? I remeber reading that somewhere.

It IS a Mario clone. Hell, look at that screen shot up there. It's DONKEY KONG, Level 1, right down to the "ape" throwing "barrels" down the ladder-laden, crooked girders. Some of the levels are DIRECT CLONES of Super Mario Bros levels, with everything roughly laid out in the same places.

He mixed some Prince of Persia rewind with a bunch of Mario/Donkey Kong levels and threw in some trippy graphics and a floaty soundtrack, and people are drooling all over it as if they haven't played this sort of thing before.

I played the demo. I wouldn't buy it to see what other levels he ripped off of subsequent Mario titles. The time travel element doesn't make up for the fact that it's still, at the root, just a platformer.
