GameStop's revenue on used games is estimated to reach $2 billion this fiscal year, ending January 31. The figure represents almost 23% of the unstoppable corporation's revenue, and is $400 million more than the prior year. The Wall Street Journal notes that about 42% of the company's profits come from used game sales.
Further on in the piece, the WSJ covers how publishers are trying to incentivize customers to buy new, by adding extra content that can "only be used once." It leads by using Gears of War 2's "Flashback map pack" as an example of "an effort to diminish the appeal of buying a used game." That certainly would be worth noting, if the pack wasn't available to purchase now on XBLM for $5.

Gamestop does not hold a gun to anyone's head.
Your high horse - get down from it.

Yeah, let's go trade/buy used games somewhere else.
I mean there's
FuncoLand [out of business][owned by GameStop]
Software Etc. [owned by GameStop]
Electronics Botique [owned by GameStop]
With variety like that, I just don't understand the complaining!

God forbid you trade games with people and not involve a business. If only there were other people who shared your interests that you could negotiate trades with by using some sort of communications medium....damn. It's not fair that Gamestop outlawed borrowing games from your mates. If only we could crush the behemoth!!!

Yes, living in Canada is a problem if you want to use eBay. It changes the deals quite a bit.
By the way, I checked the closest EB at lunch, and yes, they are selling Soul Calibur 4 for $55CAD, which is a ripoff, but only if someone were to buy it at that price. A new version is going for $60CAD.

The clerk at Gamestop told me that they don't make any money on new games and that is why they have to give you so little on trade-ins.
I laughed in her face and said, oh yeah sure. If you didn't make any money on new games there wouldn't be a store here to sell them.
I then explained that thw wholesale price on a new game that retails for $60 is usually $50 so Gamestop makes $10 selling a new game. Games that aren't hot releases have a lower wholesale price around $40-45.
I went on to say that Gamestop should be sued because they give you far less that wholsesale value for your used game trade in. They should at least give you 50% of the used retail value, that would at least be fair. SO that means any game that would sell for $50 used should net you $25. Even with that Gamestop would still make nearly twice as much selling the used game as selling a new game.
I only buy and trade at Gamestop when they have specials. Otherwise you get ripped off. I traded Resistance 2, Uncharted, Brothers in Arms, and Prince of Persia in. Before adding the special deals I only got $88 in trade in credit, total BS for $220 worth of games. But Gamestop was running the 30% extra trade in credit deal. Along with adding my 10% edge card I ended up with $125. Close enough to 50% for me.
I then used a 20% coupon with my edge card for 30% any used game I bought. Overall that gets you a pretty good deal.

How does EB/Gamestop manage to hire so many soulless retail clerks anyway?

Just the other day I was walking past my local gamestop and their employees held me at gunpoint and FORCED me to sell my old games to them at a price I did not like, but what was I suppose to do?!?!
I guess I could have put them on craigslist or ebay or amazon and dealt with the hassle of questions, shipping, bad buyers and people emailing me saying my prices were to high. I could have just kept them and not done anything with them. I could have given them away.
But no, gamestop put that gun to my head and made me trade in a game that they had multiple copies of for little to no credit which I then had to use to purchase another game! They even had the nerve to ask me if I wanted the new game I was going to but USED!!! To think I might want to save money!
Well I am never walking past a gamestop again! From now on I am only going to BestBuy or Walmart and paying full price for new games, with no options to buy used which those thieves at gamestop would let me return or exchange within 7 days!
Now I am going to go sell my Fallout3 on 360 on ebay because I know its worth more then the 22 little dollars Gamestop wanted me to accept. After all, there are only 223 auctions on Ebay for Fallout3 right now, 80 of which are buy it now starting at $44. I'm patient, I can wait.
That will teach those big meanies at Gamestop. It is a free country, I will show them they can not push me around. Now I have to run and get packing material for the game, oh and remember to charge 5 dollars for shipping and 7 dollars for the packing materials.

Nobody likes to talk about games being overpriced.
$60 across the board? Even though one game could be a 100K investment while the other is 1M? Naaaaah. Let's not take that into consideration.
Gamestop is a corporation. Every game company is a corporation. They are all out for profit. IT'S A BUSINESS. Stop acting as though game makers are some fucking noble species.
Bottom line: my money goes to the entity that gives me the best deal. Gamestop has the best used game market, and they have capitalized that fact. Why do you think the yearly game profit margin increases year after year? It's because of Gamestop. And GS isn't the only perpetrator. You think TECMO likes that I paid $10 for Ninja Gaiden II from BEST BUY brand new?
And guess what? It's all a bubble. Because eventually GS's desire to do nothing but used games will reduce the investment in new game IPs. They already have reduced shelf spacing for new games in every category. That attracts the eye of the customer to the used stuff. So new games don't get purchased. But if new games aren't purchased, they won't be traded in to be sold as used. So "new" used games for GS. OH MY GOD!
But I'm not going to spend $60-$90 for a game either.
That's just stupid in this economy.
