Lost Planet movie will cost up to $200 million to make
How awesome will the upcoming Lost Planet movie be? We'll use the only unbiased metric of filmmaking around: money. According to an interview with Capcom's Toshihiro Tokumaru, Lost Planet will deliver "between 150 and 200 million dollars" worth of awesome.
That makes the upcoming Lost Planet film about four times as awesome as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li ($50 million budget), and about six times as awesome as the original Resident Evil movie ($32 million budget). In fact, Lost Planet will be as awesome, if not more awesome, than The Dark Knight ($185 million budget).
Produced by Avi Arad (Spider-Man) and written by David Hayter, this is easily Capcom's most ambitious film project yet. Let's hope the executives at Capcom understand how dangerous a big-budget film flop can be -- Square's Final Fantasy film represented some of the largest box office losses in history. To remind you of Capcom's "vision," we've included a trailer of the game, after the cut.

Save your $200mil Capcom.......use it to make games instead.
Alien Lord @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:50AM
Exactly what I was thinking, less movies and more games.
mgsrocks1 @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:20AM
Use the $200 million to make games and to prevent firing your workers.
Chin-Poh (I wuv you Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged!) @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:49AM
Hey Capcom, Megaman Legends sequel please?
Latin Trident @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:15PM
I honestly believe they should make a sequel. I don't know how they will do it, but they should.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:07PM
yea this seems like a step in the wrong direction to me. that could easily fund another game instead of a movie, which from the gates has the odds against it since it is a video game movie.
Josh @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:52PM
$200 million would fund *multiple* high budget games.
Quattro @ Jan 23rd 2009 2:06PM
Man. Keiji Inafune said he needed like 15 million to make Megaman Legends 3, but it probably wouldn't happen because it wouldn't be financially viable, but Capcom is ok with a 200 million dollar Lost Planet movie?
archie91s @ Jan 25th 2009 10:45PM
Holy crap would I do anything for a Megaman Legends sequel!!!!
Veras Gunn @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:29AM
Why lost planet? It was fun but capcom has better series the can make movies out of. Devil may cry, an aminated okami movie would blow my mind. Hell, Viewtiful joe would too.
Ahmedz @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:44AM
isn't there a Viewtiful Joe anime?
Veras Gunn @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:59AM
Yeah, but it was hardly noteworthy. A well made movie'd be amazing.
xeleion @ Jan 23rd 2009 3:01PM
Okami and Viewtiful Joe aren't really film-friendly... also, they're not mainstream enough to make their money back in the box office. I imagine DMC would be though.
Haggard @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:32AM
This is an awful idea.
Obie @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:40AM
Who want want to pay $200 mil for a movie not that many people played? The other question is, who would watch such a film?
Wiinterfang @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:56PM
Not me.
ice~ @ Jan 23rd 2009 3:09PM
I would, because Lost Planet is good, and Capcom is good, and i will support them
Rick @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:34AM
But the game sucked...
Levi @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:41AM
Nope. It was awesome.
jimmygotsmack @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:14AM
Kicked much ass that game did, and that dialog had capcom's classic narm charm. O capcom, don't change the dialog at all, I love cheese with my popcorn.
BIGGEN (LIVE-PSN: BIGGEN1103) @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:09PM
yeah, that game was awesome. not as much for the campaign, but for the multiplayer.
DangerMouse @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:34AM
That will fail big time. What are they thinking?
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:34AM
NOT going to happen.
roxmyballs @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:10PM
Agreed.
When gamers aren't even willing to go see this, who else will? Unless they're spending a quarter of that budget on getting Will Smith, this is a guaranteed loss.
Wiinterfang @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:38AM
I wonder if is going to fail as hard as the sequel to bruce almighty.
Dirty @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:57AM
Or Son of the Mask
Wiinterfang @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:58AM
I don't know about Song of the mask ( I saw it and it sucked) but Evan almighty had a budget of 300 kajillion dollars or something.
Dirty @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:34PM
Worst movie ever.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:44AM
ummmmm didnt realize this was a good enough staple to make a movie off of let alone spend THAT much on the movie itself.....something tells me that it wont make that money back until DVD sales....
Levi @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:47AM
I thought the game was awesome - the closest thing to a current gen old school action game that we'll see. Came to this conclusion when I found out that you pick up shiny things that enemies leave behind to refill your health. I thought the game was almost like a MegaMan / Bionic Commando of this gen.
The story was cheesy though. A movie would probably flop. They should save their money and use a tony fraction to give me a trophies patch for the PS3 port.
thegreybear @ Jan 26th 2009 10:18PM
Sure he was talking about American dollars, not Japanese yen?
ittybittygirl @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:53AM
How about spending of that money to develop Lost Planet 2, which is something people actually want to see.
Lost Planet has some of the best multiplayer ever, but after two years it has gotten quite stale and the community has completely dispersed (It didn't help that they completely ruined some of the old standbys with Colonies, Point Snatcher being its sole redeeming quality)
Chin-Poh (I wuv you Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged!) @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:53AM
What the hell is all that money being spent on? Are they trying to film the movie in the Sahara Desert and getting all these huge-ass snow machines???
Jerk Face @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:06AM
LOL (+)
Well played!
Jouten @ Jan 23rd 2009 10:56AM
They can save money by making it in China with the same 'quality' for about $20,000 USD.
But yeah, if anything this will go straight to Blu-Ray/DVD and even then it might not make up for its losses.
WTH IS CAPCOM thinking? Wait, they're not...
Hyams @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:08AM
To be honest, I'd rather have a Devil May Cry film. At least it'd be fun to watch all the crazy, cheesy action, no matter how bad the actual script is.
Still, this could turn out okay. You never know.
DEEZNUTZ @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:15AM
This will NOT end well.
Something was mistranslated in the numbers cause there's no way this movie can cost more than the Dark Knight, and actually expect to even recoup half of that.
Oh well, their money to burn I guess.
Negativecool @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:38AM
I feel bad for David Hayter. He's a decent screen writer (X-men, sans the X-3 silliness). I'm not quite sure I understand why he'd put his reputation on the line for a videogame movie bound to fail.
Must got a decent portion of that 200 million...
Vcize @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:41AM
"Lost Planet movie will cost up to $200 million to make"
Yet no one will dish out $40 million for a Serenity sequel.
Sigh.
waynski1457 @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:05PM
Awww... now I'm sad...
Tumnus @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:46AM
How much did it cost to make the MGS4 movie?
JWC @ Jan 23rd 2009 11:46AM
So they're betting that it will make more money than Dark Knight? Are they crazy? DK was an established IP with a several big names involved and a knockout performance from a star who died before the movie came out. How the hell will Lost Planet top that?
Negativecool @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:42PM
I'm not really sure why you think that because they are investing 200 million they think it will automatically do better than one of the highest grossing movies of all time...There have been many movies that have exceeded 200 million that haven't matched TDK's success.
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/records/allbudgets.php
JWC @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:46PM
Here's my investment scheme: For every dollar you give me, I'll give you 75 cents back. Not interested? My point is that they must be thinking they'll do better than TDK if they're willing to put 200M into a movie. Which is pretty nuts considering the source IP.
Aaron @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:17PM
Dark Knight cost $185 million to make and earned almost $1 billion world-wide (a profit of $815 million).
If this movie costs $200 million to make, it does not need to make as much as the Dark Knight to make a profit. If it makes $201 million dollars, they will have made a profit (Ratatouille made $208 million in the U.S. alone, and Hairspray made over $200 million world-wide).
Now, as for whether this movie will be better than Hairspray, I have no idea....
JWC @ Jan 23rd 2009 1:24PM
OK, I see what you mean now. So to make a profit (a crappy one) it has to do better than Wild Wild West. Not exactly tough.
Mabui @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:01PM
1. Release game
2. Wait until everyone has forgotten about it.
3. Begin production of a movie.
4. Foolishly spend up to 200 million on it.
5. ????
6. Whatever it is they are shooting for here, it obviously isn't profit.
chenry @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:02PM
Hopefully someone will wake up and realise what a silly idea this is. Yes, Lost Planet was a pretty good game. But even the most cherished of games have become hollow movies.
Throwing a lot of money at a project doesn't mean it will produce a good movie.
Skaz @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:14PM
You can't make people like your movie, but you can increase your chances.
Gutsy move that I'd like to see turn out okay.
Jack Tretton @ Jan 23rd 2009 12:26PM
I read Capcom wants Steven Spielberg's non-union Mexican equivalent to helm the picture.
