That's too bad. They should layoff the marketing/advertisement team if you ask me.

This little flash animation perfectly sums up what I think happened at Sony when the "Squirrel" commercial aired:

Ops you guys beat me to it.

I agree they should totally fire those guys.I was going to put Gears 2 ad as good example of marketing or Halo 3 which ads I won't lie to you I think I bought Halo 3 for all the hype and for all the Epic ads.

Now check this ad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KPEs1ERFzY&feature=related

It was made by a fan and it beats R2 ad.

Thatw as made during the Atari 2600 Era and is probably one of the best ads ever made.

Perhaps that's why Sony aren't failing as much here.

Well I believe Sony hired Donny Deutch's advertising firm to run it's ad campaign.

This black octopus commercial was probably the best one Sony has done in relation to the PS3.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvWR_7HR-UA

I also think the recent entertainment unleashed ad campaign was good. It included these two commercials.

They have done better over the last year of creatively advertising their products in a memorable way with catchy tunes.

I even thought this commercial about the PS3 being a movie downloading machine was probably one of their most brilliant yet. The reason being is because 1. it was cute and 2. it was trying to appeal to more than just the hardcore crowd.

I don't think many commercials will top this one thought from GH:WT

Just going to throw this out there for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's the Cardinals Adrian Wilson doing a 66 inch vertical leap over a pipe. It is 100% genuine and real.

I think 2009 will be big in the determining the ps3's future. With the best exclusives out of any console, a few great shared titles with the 360, and a likely price drop, if it doesn't sell with those three factors it will be in real bad shape.

I know I'll get voted down for saying this, but how many years now has it been since people started saying "this is the year that will determine PS3's future"?

The PS3 isn't going to bow out of the console race, but they also aren't likely to make any huge strides forward either. I think what we've seen so far is largely how the three current consoles are going to pan out for the future. No need for this silly speculation.

I expect the PS3 to stay in its current place for the rest of the generation, I don't expect it to overtake the Xbox 360 sales. Does that mean its not worth purchasing? Hell fucking no. There are several reasons for me to buy a PS3 right now. However, I'm a bit miffed at Sony right now but its not a bad system. I hope the newer models have better quality Blu-Ray drives though.

Marty, yeah, it's been said before. There are Sony fantards out there just like there are Xbots and Nintendrones. The difference is that, for once, the list of 360 exclusives is looking comparatively small when put up next to the list of PS3 exclusives this year. If there ends up being a 'year of the PS3', this year'll be it.

You really have to define year of the PS3. I thought last year that the PS3 had the best exclusive software. It's obviously a very subjective comparison. If the "year of the PS3" means it has to move the most units then that might not ever come. If they have the games people want to play it doesn't matter what the price is. At some point people can't afford no to have one if the games are that persuasive.

It's also worth mentioning that the PS3 was owning the 360 in world wide sales last year. MS had an ace up it's sleeve with a perfectly timed holiday price drop to recapture momentum. Sony can't get into a price war right now for marketshare. They just have to make the PS3 to attractive for people to pass up on.

I think the Ps3 is the only console that has the most quality exclusives.

The x360 has fewer exclusives but also the same multiplatforms but the difference is that is cheaper than a PS3 and its marketing is pretty darn good.

And yet the Wii is eating both Xbaucks and Ps3 alive with fewer titles. That my friends is the Power of Marketing.

I suppose that, being a gamer and all, this seems kind of like a whole "lesser of two evils" thing.

People at Sony are losing jobs, but it doesn't affect the PS3. Still, I hope everyone can weather this financial storm, no matter what job they have or had.

This may sound crazy, but with Nintendo making money hand over fist and Sony supposedly losing money at abut the same rate Nintendo should buy the Playstation brand from Sony. Big N can sell the PS3 and the Wii since there are not alot of people cross shopping. It could work the same way as most all car companies (granted not the most successful sector right now). BMW for example makes the fun cheap MINI Cooper (Wii) and the over the top gizmos out the gills sports sedan M5 (PS3). I can't imagine there are many people trying to choose between the two (and just for the sake of continuing the analogy the DS or PSP would be the BMW motocycles). So if Nintedo bought PS they could have options to both hardcore and casual gamers. Not to mention sharing the PS Network (hopefully) between the two. If your not convinced just imagine a LBP on the Wii or Zelda and Metroid on the PS3.

Sony did exactly the opposite of what Nintendo did with their current console. Not only would it be entirely too expensive for Nintendo to buy the PlayStation brand, even in its ailing condition, but it would go against everything they've been working for over the last few years. That would never happen.

It's an interesting thought to throw out there but I don't see it happening. For one Sony would probably not be willing to sell the Playstation division anyway. Second, that type of consolidation wouldn't benefit Nintendo right now either.

In the end the best thing for Sony to do is stay patient with the PS3. They have started to saturate the market with Blu-Ray and they have the basis for their next generation architecture (cell). So long as they can deliver compelling software (looks like they can this year) people will buy the console.

The Playstation division has been Sony crowned jewel for a while now and I don't think they are ready to give up on it yet.

I don't think it has anything to do with PR or publicity. Look at all the gaffes MS has had with the 360 and RRoD issues, and yet, they are doing better than their first go round in the console business.

I think the real problem were the decisions Sony made. Those decisions on the PS3 model is what is causing this problem.

1 - tough new architecture which is difficult for developers to code properly in early on. Results in high cost to produce titles and game studios going out of business when they release a turd.

2 - relatively high (initial) cost of the console. Even though it may be the "best" box technically, a lot of people are opting for the 306 or Wii. The cost of entry is high and this puts off some quantity of people. A 400 dollar box is not as much an impulese buy as a 250 or 200 dollar box.

3 - delays. The ps3 came out one year late for various reasons if you compare to the 360. Even though the 360 suffered reliability issues, it managed to cement a user base early. Many games got delayed that were shown at the E3s before it was released. One thing I think is funny about the PS3 is that so much about is "coming next year" type stuff. Having MS release the 360 one full year in advance I believe ends up being better for MS vs Sony in this case, even with the initial hardware issues. Of course, Nintendo showed they had the best business plan even though they were generally considered to be the ones coming out last this gen. How could the entire internet be wrong? I digress.

4 - leveraging BR. This worked for a time to get people to rationalize why getting an expensive game machine made sense; it's not just a game machine, it plays BRUE-RAY!. Well, that aspect is now gone as BR players can be had for much less. Personally, I prefer a dedicated player that looks like my current DVD player. BR caused initial high prices and delays due to shortages of the diode. In the mean time, MS was happily selling whatever it could. I'm sure quite a few people bought 360s because PS3s were very scarce.

5 - hardware merry go round - announcing the ps3 with a certain feature set, and then gradually removing all those things that were being touted. 100% (or close) BC, then software BC, then NO BC. At least MS stayed consistent. In this area, you never felt like you were losing anything, and in-fact, felt like you gained each time new titles were added by MS to the BC list. Also, removing of media ports and going from dual HDMI to single. Obviously, these were all done to reduce cost. This to me proves that the initial strategy was wrong whereby the cost of the system was high due to everything that was packed into it. With the hardware reduced and the price still 400.00 to get started, they are still behind the 8 ball relative to the other consoles, regardless if whether it is the best value. Heck, a 747 may be a great value at 10 million, but that does not mean I would get one.

Anyway, I think those things are Sony's issues and they were magnified because it seems like the initial decisions were made in a vacuum which did not really exist. The competitors were out there and were very competent.

The PS3 is not doing bad per se, but when you compare where it is vs expectations or even the competition it is not looking good. They are in third and will end up that way at the point where this gen of consoles is no longer relevant.

To be honest here I think Blu-Ray was the saving grace for the PS3. Without that initial advantage it probably wouldn't have sold at all. I would bet you that if MS had an internal HD-DVD player for it's games and to play movies the format war would have been won by HD-DVD.

Some people may prefer a dedicated Blu-Ray player over a PS3 because a BR player is coming down in price now. However, when you consider the PS3's firmware can be upgraded with future version changes to the standard and the other benefits it's almost silly to buy a regular BR player over a PS3 even if you are just going to watch movies.

You have one company that rewarded early adopters (Sony) and one that punished early adopters (Microsoft). I'm not sure which is better in the end but I think in this case I preffered being an early adopter. The later 360 SKUs added better hardware reliability (allegedly) & an HDMI port built in. It seems liek a bit more of a slap in the face to have paid the premium price and get the inferior product. It's funny because thats what usually happens with technology.

There are a couple of things we should remember. One, the R&D budgets and the losses on the PS3 in its first 18 months are sunk costs - Sony would desperately want to recoup those losses, but if you consider only future cash flows, they are close to break even on console costs now and adding royalties on games and blu-ray sales, the PS3 is probably already profitable. So, they could keep selling 10-20 million a year for several years at say 299$ as the cost is likely to drop to 200$ or even lower over time and make massive cash flows (though probably not enough to offset their initial losses).
Plus, we have seen PS3 sales broadly = 360 sales over the last 2 years with a $200 price gap, lower games library, intense negative propoganda (cell cant do games, not enough RAM, etc etc). Well its going to 299$ soon, within reach of most people, AND the games library of 2009 is awesome (while the wii and 360 have a famine) AND killzone 2 / Uncharted 2 are going to ram all the slander about the PS3's capability down the throats of its doubters. So, we can imagine which direction sales will go.

Secondly, sometime they will launch the PS4(just like MS/N will launch wii 2 or 720). And thats where all the pain would pay off. All Sony needs is to add a bigger hard drive, some extra EDRAM / video RAM and maybe a second cell, and they will be good to go with ZERO R&D costs - even the console design doesn't need changing. Plus, the Playstation brand is probably stronger now - no 30% defect rate like 360.
