In what seems to be an attempt to release enough visual teasers for their upcoming title to fill the Louvre, Bioware just dropped another piping hot batch of screenshots and concept art for The Old Republic. Featured in this salvo are some glimpses at more of the game's interstellar environments, a few combative tableaux, a giant enemy space crab, and a jedi or two. Also, the concept art comes in the form of desktop backgrounds, so you can finally replace that old Dilbert strip that currently resides behind your icons.

Now how about some details on payment sometime soon? Guild Wars has spoiled me with its lack of a monthly payment, and Im very hesitant to go back to a game that does have those. With Guild Wars 2 set to be released in about 1, 1.5 years, and it carrying a promise of no monthly fee, I'm probably just going have that as my MMO if Bioware makes this cost anything more than $5 a month.

Spolier: Common sense dictates its going to have a monthly fee. This is the most profitable business model.

This has been the only news about the payment model, and you can see that EA quickly responded by saying that the statement was misunderstood.
I think that a Guild Wars type of model would be pretty awesome, too, as it's a bit cheaper.
On an unrelated note, does anybody think that it's too late to get into Guild Wars since they already announced Guild Wars 2?

15 dollars a month is 50 cents a day.
Is that really too expensive for people?

It's not that it's too much, but why SHOULD I have to pay it, when other games provide exactly the same thing for free?
Monthly subscriptions are a massive scam and need to be stopped sooner rather than later, I certainly won't support any developer ripping off their user base in that way. (and no, it does NOT cost anywhere near as much to keep servers running as they would like you to believe).
As for Guild Wars, I wouldn't say it's too late to go in. You can get all the campaigns for pretty cheap at this point, and GW2 is still at least a year or two away. It's still very active, fun and many of your achievements will carry over to unlock things in Guild Wars 2.

That's an interesting argument. But do you think a big company like EA could sell that idea to their stockholders? I don't really think so, since Activision can charge a monthly fee for their MMO.
Granted, even though it's Star Wars, it's not WoW (yet?).

Don't get me wrong, I'm almost certain that this will have a subscription, just that I personally won't be going near it if it does.
I don't think any game that follows with a similar model will ever be able to top WoW in terms of popularity, even with a name as big as Star Wars attached. It'd be great to see someone at least *try* something different..

The Guild Wars is in a werid meta atm, and I personally dont play it much anymore. Then again, I have played it for over 3100 hours. The GW games are cheaper than ever, and I would say its worth it for you to pick up the first one (Prophieces) to see if you like it. I think the first one is only like $20.
If you do like it however, your going to need all of the games to be competitive on a pvp level.

I'm in the same position as R - I've played Guild Wars for thousands of hours; probably too much (must have been since I can't face playing anymore).
But to approach it as a newbie - where you can get all that content for less than a full-price console game, is definitely worth it.
Especially if you buy it with a friend and treat it as an online co-op RPG

That's probably the biggest problem with GW at the moment, although there's plenty of people still active, the majority of them have already played through all of the campaigns numerous times, and it can be hard to find groups to team up with.
If you have a friend or two you can play through it with, as a co-op RPG, it'll definitely give you the best experience. Then you can just use Heroes (customisable henchmen) to fill in the gaps on your team.

The saddest thing about the monthly fee debate is that I've sunk much more money into GW (no monthly fee) than I have spent on monthly fees for any other mmo that I have ever played.

At least Bioware has a ton of experience making MMO's! Also, if Square (who's made a great many superb RPG's) can make an MMO that rocks like Final Fantas....
crap ...
Reserve judgments until you see the actual product.
I wouldn't give props, even to my own company until it showed it was deserving of it.

You know who else didn't make an MMO before they made one? Blizzard. Now I'm not saying that means Bioware can pull it off too, just pointing out your argument is weak.

Looks like a female Jedi holding a light saber gives monsters a boner too. Wait...that is a female right? That Nathan Drake/Lara Croft pic still makes me cringe.

The definition of game doesn't stretch as far as to encompass MMOs. This news doesn't belong on Joystiq.
It would be like a sports website reporting on Nascar or Formula One. It's clearly incompatible.

The amount of entertainment you get from an MMO for 15 dollars a month is quite the bargain these days. I'm not a MMO player, but I did enjoy them when I tried them. I just don't have the time or the willpower to get through the guilt of playing it so much instead of being a grownup to justify the 15 dollars.
To get my fix for this stuff I love the Diablo model of online gaming. You could play for hour or all weekend and come out feeling like you did something.
Just wished these IP's would have games like that. KOTOR or LOTR Diablo style please! I know... its wishful thinking. Maybe Mass Effect... still wishful thinking...

Can you finally chop limbs in this one? I'm not a violence/gore fan but after a bazillion Star Wars games you would think somebody would lose a body part or two with those things swinging around...Ya know, like the movies and all? (Lego SW doesn't count :P)

If I remember correctly, Jedi Knight II had decapitations at least, and Republic Commando had some gore as well. However, with the possible exception of head/hand severing, general dismemberment these days would require a lot of processing power, more than your standard MMO should rely on. So, doubtful that TOR will have decap/dismem effects.
Of course, there's always Dead Space for your body-slicing needs.

And Ninja Gaiden 2 and Fallout 3. I just wanted proper slicing in a SW game, Unleashed was disappointing.
