The NPD Group has tallied up all of the SKUs for Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour -- both multi-instrument packs and separate games -- and found that Activision / Neversoft's rocker came out on top with 3.4 million units sold last year, twice the number achieved by Rock Band 2 (1.7 million).
Though the staggered release dates (especially for Wii) didn't help matters, this hardly indicates a terrible loss for EA's side. The Guitar Hero branding is, after all, a powerful force to be reckoned with. We'd be interested to see how the original Rock Band fared last year, given that it's also competing for living room space alongside the other two. And hey, why not throw in some Rock Revolution sales data? We could use a laugh.

Hey they could totally make up for it in other countries!
Oh wait... They still suck at handling worldwide releases

So if/when a standalone Wii GH:WT guitar comes out, I'm buying that with Rock Band 2. Would I count under both camps then?

They're both good.
BUT GH IS BETTER.
If you make a better product, you get better sales.

Wii owners are starving for better games because people are getting lazy. Tell me why COD WAW is a terrible looking shooter but The Conduit looks amazing? Its just laziness.

Must suck for Harmonix to be getting beaten by a brand that they helped become popular.

This is a sad commentary on how better games do not always get the best sales. Rock Band 2 is such a more polished and complete game experience than GH:WT.
One issue that I think contributes to these numbers is that there is no Guitar+game combo sold by Harmonix. Even though I bought the whole RB2 band kit for my house, I bought two guitar hero guitar+game kits as gifts for others at Christmas.
Go Rock Band!

You know what, I'm not going to sugarcoat it, or whatever, but if you buy and prefer GHWT over RB2, you're pretty much a consumer whore. It's full of vapid product placement, I mean, the game pretty much plays out like this, since Activsion got it.
"My, what's this ROCKING GUITAR HERO (TM) TRACK? It's that FAVORITE HIT OF YOUR'S FROM the 90's.. and who's playing that.. Why! It's Billy Corgan! and he's drinkin' some red bull (TM)... Get ready to RAWWWK!" *overchart overchart overchart*
"CONGRATS! You win the DEW CHALLENGE (TM) DO THE DEW RAHHHHWKKKK!!!"
RB and RB2 are far damned more polished, and far more professional, and a damned fair bit more varied, and everything about them shows a general care for players and musicians, and a general awareness that if you put effort and care into a product, the consumers will buy it, and trust you, and buy more in the future, Whereas EVERYTHING about GH past 2 just screams nothing but wanting to make a buck at the expense of consumer ignorance. Just like every bit of Tony Hawk that came after the first few.
I just can't stand the series. I hate what it has become.
GH3 and onwards reminds me of how the first XBOX 1 DDR felt. A cruddy game made by people who had no business making it.
...and the people whining about the quality of songs in RB are some of the worst people ever. Variety hating maggots who either only want their stupid "rawkin 90's gun n roses WOOOOO" songs, or just want things that are hard. The latter are the same exact kind of cretins that destroyed almost all of the song quality in the DDR games. I hate them, and I hope someone throws their shoe at them.
BAH!

i'd love to buy RB1 or 2 if i dunno... THEY SOLD IT IN AUSTRALIA... ggz to them, its their own stupid fault for not making the product availible. GH:WT is owning it up down here.

I only bought the GW:WT guitar+game bundle becaues it as just $8 more than the RB2 guitar by itself. I had been a RB supporter all the way, but they lost the sale with their overpriced instrument (I had to return my original RB guitar 3 times, so I'm not buying the 'it's more expensive because of the quality' line).
So far, I honestly am enjoying GH:WT slightly more than RB2 when taken by itself. If I were to add in all of the DLC and all the songs I loved in RB, RB2 would win by a mile. I should mention though that I'm not very far into unlocking the songs in either game, so things could change dramatically. I just happen to like the earlier GH:WT songs more than the early RB2 songs.
On a personal note to Harmonix, not every guy is a soprano. Could you please try to add some songs that someone with a lower voice could even attempt to sing without having to drop an octave? (so far RB2 fails at this) Thanks!
