Do you think the Smash Bros. gameplay is strong enough to work without Nintendo characters?

No. I dont

Ditto. Problem is, there`s a pattern appearing:
Mario Kart Clone: Nascar kart, others to come
SSBB clone: TMNT, others to come

Hope the developers find that there`s more than one way to make a successfull game.

I think it will work. Its not the characters that make ssb successful. Its the ease of game play. Most fighting games require ridiculous button combos and smash bros simplified the fighting genre so more people would enjoy it. I think the smash bros fighting set up will work with tmnt.

Disagree. Look at the Jump Series, it's awesome and is similar in gameplay.

I wonder if team ninja and Sakurai had anything to do with the idea of TMNT? Because it's a pretty random franchise to be necroing, but I think they can make this work very well.

It works for some other fighting games. TMNT has such a great legacy as a beat-em-up as well as a viable fighting franchise, so blending the two together only seems logical

However, we shall see if they can make it click. I am confident, but you never know

I never played smash for the thrill of mario vs. link, I played it because it has awesome gameplay.(merely very good for brawl) So yes, it can survive without nintendo characters.

as for things that need carrying over to other fighters, the free movement style should replace the 'locked movements' that make random button mashing a viable strategy.

Ummm...this game was the cover story in Nintendo Power two months ago. The development team includes some of the people who developed Brawl, most notably the SSB creator, as well as former members of Tecmo's Team Ninja.

Similarities explained.
Are the TMNT as big a deal as the Mushroom Kingdom gang, no I don't think so. But it could be fun, might have the online component streamlined/enhanced, might move 3rd party units, might be a Nintendo exclusive...so what is there to be upset about?

At least the dev team is made of previous Smash devs, so it's not a blatant rip-off copy. But I do agree with other people, something has to change in the gameplay department. I love Brawl, but... it's too familiar.

I don't think there are nearly enough characters across all of TMNT (_good_ ones....) to make it nearly as interesting, with so many widely varying fighting styles.

And I agree with TracerBullet: there have been other Mario Kart Clones over the years (Crash [Bandicoot] Nitro Kart, anyone?) that have been mediocre, if not terrible. I don't see this as a particularly good trend, either.

I would much rather see a new beat 'em up in the vein of TMNT II or TMNT III released via WiiWare (with online co-op!!) than a fighting game. I just don't think TMNT has quite the following that it did years ago...

No doubt Madworld is a mature game but it's the most gimmicky of the lot, your argument fails if you wanted to state that you should have used The conduit as an example.

Thats were your wrong, madworld is being developed my platinum games/the ex creators of okami, godhand and viewtifull joe. It will focus on gameplay.

If I would of went with the conduit, i would be a hypocrite because the conduit is one big gimmick.... crappy graphics which is sadly only good because their the only company who has tried really, and only gets attention do to customizable controls and graphics.

OK then by your logic there can be no bad video games?
Sorry i think 3 moves per character, shitty controls, and then same gameplay since the n64 version is a bad game.

I'm just saying that just because you don't like a game, it doesn't mean that the game suck, is just not your type of game.

Example: I don't like Street fighters games, but I cannot say that the Street fighters series sucks, those games are good but they aren't my type of game, that's all

First off, I don't trust anything being made by Ubisoft for a Nintendo system will be good.

Second, if it were me, I wouldn't go with Smash Bros-type gameplay for a Turtles game. I would personally go with a more SF-esque focus, although as mentioned, TMNT has a history as a brawler more than a fighter, so in that regard, Smash Bros gameplay is fitting.

That said, I'm not sure why they're going with Ninja Turtles. At this point that just seems like deliberately limiting your sales. They aren't exactly popular anymore and previous attempts to reboot the franchise have generally failed. This game will be lucky if it breaks half a million in sales. They would have been much better off making a whole new franchise.

I'm pretty sure the turtles are still popular with people who grew up watching the show. Everyone I've told the game about to is intrigued by it.

But on to Smash Bros. and the Turtles. Do you think the Smash Bros. gameplay is strong enough to work without Nintendo characters?
Yes, yes, yes. I can't stand Street Fighter style fighting games. Melee was one of the best I ever played, and it had NOTHING to do with the Nintendo fanservice.
Too bad brawl messed with the mechanics to a point where it had to rely on fanservice alone, something at which it could have done better.

"And is it going to become its own branch of the fighting game genre?"
I certainly hope so

COUGH*DON(Dragon ball, One piece vs Naruto) was the PS2 Smash clone and, it worked in sales and reception...I hate the game(i hate clones) but well , it worked. So im like shocked when someone comes saying stuff like ," would it work?"Gosh a small research wont hurt.Yeah these games work ,with our without nintendo characters, very well.Problem is, Ubisoft hardly makes anything work, except for the Dissapointing Prince of persia titles, etc.

This isn't the first time anyone ripoffs Smash. I've played the original Digimon Rumble Arena back when it was released on the PS1 and my friend had it (hey, I was like 10) and it was really fun (of course, the sequel sucked balls).

First of all, I think it can absolutely work, especially since it'll be a long while (most likely) until we get another Smash Bros game, so having a game "like" it will be great. Especially if they can get the online multiplayer to actually work. I've owned Smash Bros Brawl since day one and maybe been able to connect to 4 matches total (and all of them laggy). It's pretty pathetic, especially when you consider how well Mario Kart Wii plays online.

Anyways, my concern is where they'll get the characters from for this Turtles game. While it's most likely they'll get most of the characters from the recent TV series, I'd love to see some characters from the old comic books and old TV series. Some characters that come to mind; Slash (not the guitarist!), Armaggedon, all the Mighty Munimals like Wingnut, Manta Ray, Mondo Gecko, some of the bad guys like Null, Baxter Stockman... geez, there's so many of them that would be great.

Also, they should make an "assist" like system, and one of them could be Cowlick, who picks up all the fighters and sends them to another fighting stage. (If I'm speaking gibberish, look up the "Archie Comics" Ninja Turtles and you can read all about it, it was a sweet comic series.).

I think that really the only Nintendo thing about it is its name. The formula is fun, and honestly if the arenas vary, and with the right amount of characters, I think this could be a really fun title.

I love smash bros, and i love ninja turtles. I think it will work, this is a wii game i can look forward to. Though i hope they use more melee style gameplay, brawl was too slow for me. Sad too, it was a beautiful game and had awesome characters, they should have kept it fast paced though. I miss the wave dashing haha.

Yes, it can survive without Nintendo characters.

But if it's not with characters I love, then I won't care about it.
