Grab the in-game Gears 2 Gold Lancer for free [Update]

If you picked up your copy of Gears of War 2 used, you now have a chance to get your hands on the elusive gold-plated Lancer, which was -- until today -- only available via a voucher code included with new copies of the game. It's available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace as a free download.

Don't look so surprised. Earlier in the month, Microsoft released the Flashback Map Pack -- another item initially made available only to new buyers of the game -- on the Marketplace. At least this time, the content is free. No word if it will remain that way.

Update: This content seems to only be available on the Xbox.com Marketplace, not on the Xbox 360 Marketplace.

first i shell out the 69.99 for the collectors edition. get my code for the maps and the lancer, you know one of the main reasons to buy the collectors edition, then i find out that people can get the maps for 400 MS points, well thats ok cuz i mean more people to play on the maps with, but now wtf MS and Epic this is just rediculous. way to screw over everyone who payed the extra $10, next thing you know the 2nd disc of the collectors edition will be on sale on the marketplace for 800MS points. oh and dont even get me started on the price of the maps, guh i hate them

I agree with you, and I didn't even buy the limited edition; just the regular. And I don't even own that anymore. I got sick of waiting for Epic to fix it.

Look on the bright side. Pretty much everyone who bought the game got ripped off. It's a broken mess.

It'll take plenty more than that to get me to play this game again.
I don't think I'd pick one up on Ebay for $10. Seriously.

I completely agree!! I paid 10 extra bucks for the LE game and look at this. I should of just got the ebay version... Nice going EPIC.

No doubt. I sold my gold lancer and hammerburst on ebay for $43 about a month ago! Sucks to be that guy (or the 100s of others) right now.

This little experiment in exclusivity will be the one and only time I participate. This is just stupid. Bribe a bunch of people into paying more for something with exclusive content, wait 2 months offer exclusive content to rest of population for free.

This game is a complete joke. I can't believe what Epic did to Gears of War 2. All they had to do was fix the lag, the two main glitches (crabwalking and weapon sliding), tone down the shotgun, and leave everything else the same.

And now they screw over the people who paid an extra $10 for this POS.

Dammit! I just traded this game for COD W@W.

The seller is a d-bag by selling it in the first place. Most of the bids I see are brand spanking new eBayers bidding on the codes, probably artificially increasing the value of the codes with no intention to buy.

I really, really hope they don't offer the golden Hammerburst for free.

I was going to see if you could just check your download history for the hammerburst download. Then give that link to me to see if this same thing works there =p

I've got no way of checking myself because they don't give out the link for this kind of stuff.

it's not in the Canadian marketplace but the link above lets Canadians download it fine. It's a reminder to never buy SE because of DLC! At least for GoW3!

You know how all the next gen games went up in price? Well it ws due to all of the collectors/limited editions that came out at the end of the last gen. They are basically trying to see if people are willing to pay a larger amount for, well garbage. Bravo to Treyarch/Activision for doing the opposite with W@W.

I think in the zest of getting a “news report” this blog was most likely posted without really checking it out. I looked through Marketplace and I can’t find anyplace where it is mentioned as a new free download. Go to the link in the post and at the bottom of the page you will notice this:

“The Gold-Plated Lancer Assault Rifle is unlocked exclusively with an Xbox LIVE redemption code included in new copies of the Gears of War 2 Limited Edition. This special weapon is available for use in multiplayer matches.”

It *is* there. Click Download to Xbox 360 from the link provided in the post. It will queue it to your Xbox the next time you log in. I checked before I wrote the post and I just checked it again. Still works.

Just a note, Epic had a multiple page thread with the poster using this entry as the first post. The rest of the posts were angry LE owners. Minutes later, Epic deletes the thread. I guess they didn’t want to hear their customers complaining and telling them they wouldn’t buy any more LE versions from them again.

I'm gonna disagree with everything here. This is what happened with Banjo Kazooie on XBLA. They could find it before it was allowed on the marketplace for everyone.

The description still talks about the Lancer. So they could just add 9999999 ms points on to stop people from buying it.

If I am right, then one can also find the hammerburst.

Well this isn't exactly the first time this happened. This happened before but MS fixed it by making it cost 9999999 points. Wonder why its back up =/. It still works though.

I don't understand why people go so nuts over this garbage. Why would you ever pay $10, let alone $30-$40, to have a golden gun in-game? Why?

that's what i can't figure out either.
I figured people bought the LE because of the bonus disc and had a serious hard on for the GOW series. a simple gold skin for an in game object is probably the dumbest thing to get worked up over.
