Nintendo President Satoru Iwata will be putting his oratorical skills to the test, delivering a keynote entitled "Discovering New Development Opportunities" at this year's Game Developers Conference. There are no other details provided, and trying to discern any surprise announcements based on that speech title is pretty much a fruitless endeavor.
Iwata last gave a GDC keynote in 2006, when he showed Brain Age and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Company man Miyamoto gave the 2007 speech and revealed ... the Everybody Votes Channel. As for last year, the House of Mario's presence was limited to a handful of sessions. Get your bingo cards ready, Iwata's keynote is set for Monday, March 25 at 9 a.m. PST (that's noon, Joystiq Standard Time).

I stopped hoping for Nintendo to deliver after E3. I'm done wasting my time, maybe I'll pay attention again when they release something worth playing.

I fear that "Discovering New Development Opportunities" will mean to develop even more casual (casualier?) games by tapping even deeper into the non-game-playing-demographic than ever before.
Possible entries:
Wii Paint by Numbers.
Wii Connect the Dots.
Wii Poo (designed to track bowel movements and provide tips on how to maintain regular BM`s)
Wii Calculate (A calculator for the calculation of mathematical calculations)
And some other fifth thing.

The fifth thing is Wii Sutra. It involves the balance board.

I'd buy like....10 damn copies of Mario Paint for the Wii.
Don't bash the paint, natch.
I'm still the fly swatting king

I lost faith to Nintendo's conferences.
In fact, I lost faith to Nintendo Co.

There's no way in hell he'll top the "Everybody Votes Channel" announcement.

Oh yes, let's put all sorts of stock into what is supposed to be an event for game developers, not a forum for the media
Although they did unveil their DLC purchasing model last year, so you could see something like that in the sense of features, but begging for the big, epic software title (especially from Nintendo) is going to lead to disappointment, and then more of these fair-weather Nintendo fans talking about "losing faith"

Plus the fact that it is an old pic
But it still reflects the desires of many Nintendo fans. See, we're not all stupid enough to get caught up in the internet's witch-hunt and overreaction to the last E3, and we're not stubborn enough to have totally ignored the fall media conference, and continually deny it's significance

"Discovering New Development Opportunities" eh? How about opening up WiiWare and DSiWare to more developers. Like the ones that, you know, don't rent out an office building or haven't previously released a game before. Actually opening up for and embracing independent homebrew developers instead of shutting them down and locking them out at every turn. I would love to see something akin to Microsoft's XNA Creators Club. That'd be nice.

Sorry. Afraid not. I just like homebrew and the idea of running it and developing it without the need for pirate equipment, downgraded firmware, or special hacks. If the Big N would offer a legitimate way for garage developers and students to tinker with their hardware, I'd be a happy camper.

Holy crap, this should be very interesting, from a development standpoint (remember, it is the GAME DEVELOPER'S Conference, people).

Mr. Khan, we aren't all as stupid as you insinuate when we look at three consoles on the shelf and go to play the one with the most engrossing games, and then notice we have not picked the wii in that scenario for a long time. Internet witch hunts have nothing to do with it for me.

Right, Duke, i never said you were. I've always respected your opinion, and those of many on this site who don't particularly care for Nintendo, because they pursued it from a rational point of view. It was targeted at those "Oh fuck you Nintendo you traitorous bastards" people who were making such a big show of it after E3 and beyond. The people who were so quick to shout doom and gloom to the world. Those are the idiots.

What would it be?
A real console?
A real new handheld?
A real game?
More likely another piece of worthless spastic plastic tied to a dumb 2 mins game which a lazy teenager made in 3 hours and sold for an attractive price of 249.99 USD. On sale today!

I don't agree with your "A real console?" question, but you have to be fucking kidding me with the "A real handheld?" one. Seriously? The only console to rival the software library of the DS is the SNES and maybe the PS2.

really? A teenager you say? Well in that case, I expect you ramp up production to 1 Wii every 2 hours. Also, I'm docking your pay.

All I want to hear about is Zelda -- if he doesn't say ANYTHING about Zelda, then don't bother to say anything at all.
