Sony dismisses IGN's PSP2 rumors, disses IGN

Wow, not only did Sony take the time to deny an IGN rumor about the PSP2, but the company took the opportunity to flat out insult the site. IGN recently cited "several credible sources" in a report on Sony's next handheld, allegedly featuring a touch screen, Bluetooth support, hard drive and GPS. MCV then spoke to Sony about the rumor -- that's when the sparks flew.

"Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses," Sony explained. "Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how 'on the money' IGN are. Needless to say, we don't comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense."

We don't know who to feel embarrassed for right now, but it's certainly going to be awkward if IGN is right.

In a fit of rage, IGN develops its own console that, in true IGN style, is bloated with stuff no one wants or needs - somehow surpassing the fluff of even Sony's offerings.

In all fairness, if IGN can make a console that "...allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses." Then I am sold on it! Hell, I have been looking for a way to time travel and use all those baby rino tusks I have in my garage.

Nah... IGN is quite retarded. Don't forget their fanboi'ism when they wished they could give Halo 3 an "11 out of 10". Most embarrassing review ever.

Plus, there was a day (many many years ago) when the site was free... then they cockblocked everyone out with their strict Insider business. Non-Insiders could hardly view ANYTHING.

Sony is in for it, i think that they are going down. I also had no idea that teleporters were ready for use. This is crazy news!!

IGN totally deserves this. They are everything that is wrong with video game journalism. Their review scores are a sight to behold. And buying exclusive rights to publish reviews? How can someone even believe in the article and the writer's intentions when they've paid to get it out first?

Ugh. They make me sick. All the more reason I miss 1UP/EGM and the pre-Gerstmann Gate GameSpot.

the irony is that all of ign's reviews are pretty close to the averagee of all reviews. Except for double agent..9.1 my ass...

IGN has been going down the tubes, but i don't know whether it's better to judge this negatively against Sony for being so unprofessional about it, or positive towards Sony, for calling out IGN like that

Given the antagonistic attitude the enthusiast press has with most companies in this industry, I think they should be able to take a little commentary back that is less than cordial.

i think a regular "we dont comment on rumor or speculation" would have sufficed, but come on "powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses" that's classic stuff right there lol.

Too bad the PSP2 only gets about 6 hours of juice from those baby rhino horns.

I think it's a positive for Sony really. I mean think about it. Let's say PSP2 was real (we all know it is but still), what IGN has officially done is given stats for people to drool about. The Hard Drive aspect seems okay at first, but what's the biggest issue plaguing PSP right now? Battery Life. What's the biggest issue plaguing all hard drive driven portable devices? Battery Life. So Hard Drive is looking unlikely if solid state media continues to go down. But people will bitch because it doesn't have a huge hard drive. What IGN has done with their rumor is give the fantards something to hold against Sony.

Example? Remember when In-Game XMB was coming with the 2.0 firmware on PS3? Nobody at Sony gave a timeline for that feature aside from "it's coming." But despite all this news being mainly rumormills making this stuff up, 2.0 came and went with a huge amount of negativity towards Sony for failing to deliver on a promised feature they never actually promised.

Yeah all of a sudden Sony is sounding like they did with Krazy Ken at the wheel. I love when they say off the wall stuff that makes no sense or is way overblown. Combine this with Kaz's fanboy battle with Greenberg and this is getting fun again:)

Well, I guess Scott Lowe can talk some mess or eat some crow in a few months when the PSP2 is announced with our without multitouch technology.

I know IGN is not the greatest source for gaming information (that's what Joystiq is for ^__^) but there's no reason to flat out dismiss the site like that. It was just a rumor, they could have been all Nintendo and just said "This is pure speculation."

I really starting to think a bunch of douchebags run the Playstation brand.

Actually, those are part of the insane list of specs on the PS4. If the insanity of the PS3 is any hint, the PS4 is going to get pretty close to God.

Sony PR are usually annoying and boring but I must admitt that this was actually funny.

I think it was fantastic! IGN, Joystiq, Destructoid, Kotaku, etc all take potshots at Sony (and the rest) on an hourly basis. I like seeing Sony giving them a little ribbing back. I'd love to see the big N and MS do the same.

Sounds a bit like they can dish it but can't take it, but then again, this is the internet.

Yeah, I suppose their guides are decent. I gave up going there awhile ago for the most part. The Wii guys are so hopelessly biased the reviews have become meaningless, everything is good or great.

Methinks the PR person behind this statement hasn't had the best of days. If its been anything like mine (I was in a car accident a half hour ago), then I can sympathize with the sarcastic tone and laugh at the brilliant diss.

Nothing wrong with what Sony said. The PSP2 is not going to have all those features. It's already too expensive as it is. All that would just drive the price up. IGN was just link baiting.

It's one thing to strongly dismiss a rumor, and another thing make a childish, unprofessional statement. I agree, el serpiente, but a bold and well-thought out statement can be said without silly sarcasm, which can be more powerful that what was stated in this article.
