Its a great game.

But the demo is no indication of how better the full game is. The later levels are a lot better and well planned.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Reminds me of Pikmin from the picture.

It plays kinda like Katamari Damacy, but instead of a ball of garbage, you have a carnivorous blob on a leash.

I wouldn't call it the most innovative game out there, and I doubt I'll replay it once I'm finished with it. However, with that being said, it really is a very well done game! The graphics are excellent for a XBLA game, and the gameplay is pretty enjoyable to me! I couldn't ask for much more for $10!

I love this game. I would have paid 5 for this expansion. The full game has 8 levels I believe. I love this game!!, its fun, simple, not too long, about 2-3 hours, and its quite innovative and addictive.

Highly recommended for 800 points on XBLA.

"Deleted scenes?"

How about "Let's withhold these scenes and sell them to unwitting punters later for cash money."

With top shelf XBLA games coming in at $15 lately, the option to buy the core game for $10 and expand for three times for $3.75 is still a good deal.

It depends on whether the core game is enough, though. DLC must be handled carefully, balancing the profit margins and consumer goodwill.

Hey, folks. I think Maw is a decent game, and I'm sure the DLC is worthwhile. I just found it a little odd that these add-ons were being revealed so soon after the game was released. It is probably clever marketing, but it seems a little exploitative.

With console download services going strong since 2005/2006, most developers large and small develop with DLC in mind, and many even develop it alongside the game proper. I get the feeling the tail on XBLA games is not so long, especially when the game in question is single player only and only a few hours long. Chances are as an indie dev they want to maximize their investment and make sure as many players as possible will buy the DLC... if they waited a few months I doubt people would be nearly as interested in revisiting the title.

If you mean exploitative as in taking advantage of the timing, I fully agree... but also don't see how that's a bad thing. If you mean exploitative as in taking advantage of gamers... please explain how this is so? Keeping in mind of course we're talking about a $10 download game and not a $60 retail title.

@justcliffe sez:

"Hey, folks. I think Maw is a decent game, and I'm sure the DLC is worthwhile. I just found it a little odd that these add-ons were being revealed so soon after the game was released. It is probably clever marketing, but it seems a little exploitative."

No no. It's great for everyone. They sell more copies of their game, since it has a lower price. We maybe buy and play more "full versions" of games, because of the lower price. If you're buying a portion of the game for a portion of the money, so what? Then, if you really like it, you can pony up the extra $$$ for additional levels, and you're paying closer to what may have been the original price. If you don't like it, you're not forced to buy it. Many people won't, they won't like it _that much_ and those people have saved money.

Everyone wins!

Or you can look at this like movie theatre soda and popcorn. The "full" popcorn is $6.00 but the "small" popcorn is $5.00 and the "medium" is $5.50. You're pushed to buy the big one cos you want that deal, even if you don't necessarily want that popcorn. You may not buy it, but you might think about it more. A lot more people buy it cos it's just a buck. Here the game is $10, then the add-on levels are $3.75.

Unlike movie theatre popcorn, you can buy 1, 2, or 3 of them and still get the same price. More people will buy the add-ons for "just a buck twenty-five." Nice to have that option. Everyone gets what they want.

How about pushing this post to xbox.joystiq.com. This is what I didn't want to see happen but hopefully it is just first day quirks.

Personally I really hope it doesn't go to the extent where anything remotely console specific gets pushed off the main page. I don't want to have to page hop all the time.

No this shouldn't be just on the xbox site but it should be on both at the same time. Obviously you have gotten some comments from people that may have never seen this post in the past since Xav mainly wrote just for X3F.

DLC news was always cross posted. This was already put on the old X3F yesterday and was a hold over because of our server downtime last night.

The game is short, and not particularly challenging.. but it's very unique, a lot of fun and has a lot of charm. It reminds me a lot of a Pixar movie, and both Frank and the Maw are just extremely likable characters.

Almost makes me wish it could have been developed into a full retail game, but it's great to see more 3D platformers on the Xbox regardless.

jcliffe is right.

This is awesome, but frankly the whole "let's sell the rest of the game as DLC" thing might get out of hand soon.

Before you know it, they'll be releasing DLC on the same day a game comes out, even when the DVD it's on is only half full.

Before you know it, they'll be selling cheat codes as DLC.

Before you know it, they'll be planning DLC before preproduction even starts.

Oh, wait.

Plus the fact that the new layout isn't 24 hours old yet. Give 'em time to work out the organizational side of it

By releasing DLC on three different occasions they extend the duration of their mindshare. The game is complete at $10, and still a good value at $13.75. I think it's a clever way to get and hold attention and not fall to page 163 of Ultrastiq so quickly ;)

I don't think I could finish Brute Force it was so bad. It was definitely overrated despite the scores it received. My first impression was the graphics and enemy AI was good. That changed really quick.

I really enjoyed playing through The Maw, However I feel a little taken advantage of when told that "deleted scenes levels" will cost me 100 gp EACH... Especially when the game itself was so short and easy.
I paid 800gp for Castlevania:SotN at the same time as buying The Maw and I can't even get past the first boss of C:SotN after playing for the same amount of time as it took me to do ALL of The Maw...
