"That means there was a good chance that the power supply you used was pumping out more power than your new 360 required, and that, as you may have surmised, would be a bad thing."

WRONG. Using a power brick capable of 12V/14A on a console that only requires 12V/12A means that the console will only pull 12A from the 14A capable power brick.

It's the OTHER way around that's the problem. Try to plug a power hungry old console into a newer less capable brick, and you'll have trouble. That's why MS has keyed the power connectors so that this can't happen.

You should have no problem plugging a newer console into an older brick. As long as the current rating on the brick is equal to or MORE than the console's list demand, you are fine.

If I may elaborate: The current ratings on the power supply are the maximum that the power supply can safely deliver. As long as you're drawing less then or up to the rated max, you'll have no problem.

Look at PC power supplies as an example. If you've got a 400W unit running your system without an issue, your computer isn't going to explode if you suddenly upgrade that power supply to an 800W unit. In all likelihood, the machine is drawing 250-300W, and will draw that from whatever supply is feeding it.

Again, Microsoft has keyed the newer power supplies so that a 150W or 175W power brick can't be plugged into a launch Xbox (since it doesn't have the ampacity to power the Xbox) - unless some numb-nuts tries to cramjam it in there.

We've even seen where initial Falcon units only required the 175W brick but came with the 200W unit and again when 150W Jaspers came with the 175W (or even 200W) bricks. Those combos are fine.

I was going to say, I don't blame the guys at X3F or XJ or whatever you are, but using an old PSU with a new console is perfectly fine.

Would you advise not using a 700w PSU with a PC that only needs 100w?

The only thing you should not use is a new PSU with an old console, that could cause a major safety hazard or just crash the 360 constantly.

mattclarikie - it should certainly work to use a 700W PSU on a 100W PC load, but the efficiency is going to be bad and you'll end up using more power from the wall than a smaller-rated PSU would.

I can't believe how many people I see wanting to sell off consoles they think are going to die. THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT WOULD BUY THEM!!!! Do you really want them to spend their hard earned money on a gaming console that the previous owner KNEW was a lemon? Doing something like that is wrong on so many levels.

As for the power supplies, I have two different consoles. A launch pro and an hdmi arcade unit. They have different connectors for the power supplies so you can't inter-change them.

If the power supply fits, it isn't a different wattage. Microsoft isn't that dumb.

Well, I am going to be getting that RE5 360 if/when it comes out. There is no need for me to keep my old one if i buy it. So $125 is a good price and I am sure somebody will buy it. Who knows, if you have kids, or when you have kids, I'll make him an offer for a 360 for $125 and your kids will buy it!!!! Selling your 360 to some poor sap because you think it might brick soon is a very douchey thing to do, IMO.

@Latin Trident

go get an Arcade from Dell for $170. Plug in your existing 20gb harddrive and feel secure with the newest hardware and design. 65nm chip, hdmi, fixed RROD (hopefully), and new 3 year warranty. and it is so quiet. you have all your saves, settings, Live profile, etc. very easy. Just make sure to stick the the proper power brick. also use the component cables that came with the 20gb since the Arcade comes with composite cable. or buy an HDMI.

my original 20gb just turned black. Replaced with an Arcade and haven't looked back. It was going to be $99 to fix a 3 year old Xbox versus a new $170 improved console.

Then you bust it open and hack it to death or wait for it to RROD to get it fixed for free. you never know. I tried the 3 towel trick and the old box started up great. i'll wait to see if it stays that way.

@hermannsmith, it's true about the power brick, I did the exact same thing as you. I've had a couple red-ring on me, and I go get a new one because I'm like an addict with my 360. Anyway, I realized what I was doing wrong when it finally occurred to me that newer 360s use less power. So luckily I figured it out when I was hooking up my newest one. I think I probably ruined at least one. On the bright side, I now have one to take apart and tinker with.

Other than Aegis Wing, which you already mentioned, I can't think of any other free games, besides He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Played, which isn't even available to download anymore...

i've been crunching some numbers in regards to buying a new console/ repairing an old one. my disc drive broke (6 days after the 1 year warranty ran out). and i don't wanna spend $100 to fix it. but, here's how i see it- buy a new arcade console, sell everything you don't need on ebay. your old bricked console will bring $30, you can get $20 for a controller, $30 for a power brick, $10 for a memory card, and a few bucks for your composite cable. and those are all low end prices. in all, you're gonna make about $100 selling yr junk, which brings the new console cost down to at least $100- same as repair cost, and now you have a new unit and warranty.

or, if anyone has a spare disc drive, that'll at least help me with MY problem.

Just had a quick question for you guys....I've been a long time reader and you guys know just about everything about xbox.

My Xbox was recently stolen and I'm going to replace like now but I wanted to know if there was a way to get your gamertag, achievements, downloaded content, etc. on the new xbox. I know you can recover your gamertag by entering your password on another xbox but would I have to do that everytime I wanted to sign in to my new xbox? Is there a way I could make my gamertag the default to sign in on my new xbox?

Anyways, you would only have to recover your info once.

Yes, you can do that. You would just have to set it as your default and no you wouldn't have to recover it every time. Just once and you're set.

How about... " JAX " as the new tagline? Ask Joystiq Xbox. Could make a fancy logo demonstrating the move of "ask" and "joystiq"...

Yeah alright, maybe that's too complicated.

Yeah, that's what I really dislike about the redesign. Under the "multiple fanboy URLs" system if a story got repeated on the different blogs they'd each give their own little audience-centric spin on it. Now it's like all one blog, just separated into different categories.

Was this a cost-cutting measure? I'd understand if it was, given the second Great Depression and everything. But I feel like we're getting less content post-redesign.

Salutations, former Xbox360Fanboy!

Can't express enough how disappointed in this new site and name change. This "Joystiq Xbox seems soulless, lifeless and NOT 360 centric. I see PS3 and Wii stories and news on the right banners. WTF and... WTH!

Change is good however now you seem more in being general video gaming than 360 focused. Which was your niche, that no longer the case I have not reason to visit your site. As other sites beat you in this arena. I love my 360 and see no reason why a website can't be dedicated to it exclusively.

The Sony PS3 fanboys love their games and the system... So now have to find another focused dedicated Xbox 360 site. Because now I won't recommend you, come here to this site or even list to the podcast. Which is sad but you just like Sony have lost your focus.

Bye
