Gears of War 2: Microsoft flubs gold Lancer offer [update]

How does MS always screw this stuff up? Seriously? How do you freaking accidentally put something like up for download for free when it's not even meant to be there at all? Incredible.

Am I the only one that didn't want a bright gold gun to run around with screaming that I paid money to have a bright gold gun? Seemed a little silly to me.

Ummm...yes, i did download it last night because Microsoft made a mistake. Are we not allowed to take advantage of such a mistake?

Can you re-allocate those resources and help Epic fix the part of the game that allows the host to end a match by quitting? I've only played about 10-15 matches online, and for the ones that I've been winning, more than half of them get ended by a sore-loser quitting dirtbag on the opposite side.

Plus, what would stop me from re-downloading it and overwriting what they did in the patch?

I didn't buy the collectors edition of Gears2 soley for the gold lancer, and the gold hammerburst for pre-orders was a nice bonus. Nevertheless, it was one of their selling points. And it is sort of a rip-off to offer them to everyone a few months later. If they honestly meant to sell the lancer, wouldn't that be false advertising? It does say exclusive to the CE of Gears2. I'm glad that MS is going to try and fix this. I'm getting tired of this FU mentallity these big corporations have towards us consumers. It's becoming more and more prevelent, and they wonder why business is so bad. I really don't want to give what little money I have to someone that wants to take my money and rip me off after the fact.

Paying for a gold lancer ='s stupid. A chance to EARN a gold lancer via some sort of achievement is much more interesting.

Well, as far as the people saying they can't remove it, it is digital assets, etc. etc. That is entirely false. They likely have different IDs attached to how you aquired the gun, so the update would simply check how the gun was aquired (via code download, or via free marketplace download), if you are the latter, it would remove it, if you got it from legit means (using the code) then it would stay. No, the art assets wouldn't be removed, but the means to use said art assets would be. That is how it functions in the first place. It is an unlock key...

Really simple... Surprised it is so hard for some of you to get how they could do this.

Damn joystiq you guys are late on this. They did it last month, They had the Gold lancer, Gold Hammerburst, and the Cod 5: special edition stuff. I have the gold lancer and i have gow2:ce, i also got into cod5 double xp and the other CE: stuff b/c of that flaw on the marketplace.com thingy

@Fafhrdd While I still think the best way to get a gold lancer is off your dead locust ass, gimme a break MS. Taking it back after you screwed the pooch? Please. I'm in the club that doesn't really like the gold gimme weapons, but even if I did have em, there was a fair bit other stuff in the CE besides a code for a gold lancer, wasn't there?

And for everyone who is saying this isn't Epic's doing, you're right. It's possible MS's aftermarket people may need Epic's help to back out the new, improved and egalitarian gold lancer, but I can about guarantee you that taking it away from folks was NOT Epic's idea.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: Gold lancer was for CE, gold hammerburst was for preorder of SE or CE, gold lancer was also for midnight launch when picking up SE at Gamestop (and possibly any other brick&mortar midnight launch outlets).

Honestly everyone who has the lancer right now should keep it. Microsoft screwed up and they should not punish their business for it.....for anyone who got the lancer for free, well then they were lucky.....for anyone who paid for just the lancer, you are an idiot......for anyone who bought the limited edition game, you paid 10 dollars more for the tin case......and anyone who missed out on the freebie, well that sucks for you........but anyone who gets pissed off over a golden lancer in a video game, get a life. I paid for the limited edition game and got the lancer, I think its cool (not worth $50 like Im seeing it selling for on ebay). It doesnt do any more damage than the regular lancer so no one should be complaining about not getting one or paying insane amounts of money to get just a gun (just kill the people who have the gun first in online matches and take it). Just dont be a loser complaining online that people got it who didnt deserve it.....thats life, sometimes people are just in the right place at the right time. So, I am saying to anyone at Microsoft, dont be stupid and piss off the people paying to play your games, just put it in the marketplace for a reasonable price, $5 - $10; anyone who bought the limited edition game and got the golden lancer, keep playing have fun and dont let something to simple ruin a good game for you; anyone who got the lancer for free, go out and buy a lottery ticket cuz you are a pretty lucky person (and if you happen to win I wouldnt mind getting some of that money); the people who missed out, dont waste your money on lottery tickets this week just dont let this get you down; and the people who are pissed that some people got the lancer for free, go outside, live life, its just a game.

Perhaps they can actually fix the crappy online and stop spending time with a stupid gun skin. Gold guns don't affect gameplay. Extreme lag and Glitchers do.

What is ridiculous is that I bought the Collector’s Edition in South Africa precisely to get a golden lancer and the game never came with any codes :(

Considering the LE Gold Lancer was obtained via a code, and the leaked Gold Lancer was obtained by a mistake on the Xbox.com marketplace, I'm sure Microsoft will have no difficulty working out who got it through the leak, and who didn't.

I downloaded it for free...I used it a couple times...and ya know...if they wanna take it back, I'll GLADLY give it to them. I didn't buy it, I didn't earn, and I don't really even like it. So...whether it stays with me, or they take it back, I'm not using it anyway.

So if I get 99999 Microsoft Points, can I buy i?! DURR!!!
