Keiji Inafune mentions Lost Planet, Dead Rising sequels, may be multiplatform
We completely understand talk of a sequel to Lost Planet. With a movie in the works, it makes sense to revisit the misplaced orb that's so wonderfully overrun with bugs and mechs. As for Dead Rising 2 ... we want more Frank West in skimpy clothing. Also, we want to kill 53,000+ zombies again.
Themega man behind the Mega Man series and Capcom top dog, Keiji Inafune, recently sat down for a chat with Japanese mag Famitsu and was pretty direct about his forthcoming projects, making sure to refrain from beating around bushes. "We're finally putting out new Dead Rising and Lost Planet games," he exclaimed. He went on to say that Capcom is "thinking about multiplatform, and expanding upon both slightly from the Xbox 360 version."
CVG asked a Capcom UK spokesperson about the matter, who said that Dead Rising "was a huge success for us and is obviously the kind of game we'd like to continue to make." He elaborated further, adding that, "At the moment we have made no official announcement regarding a sequel. As the source is Famitsu, I can only suggest that it was a mistranslation." Mistranslation, huh?
So, what say you all? Want another Lost Planet? We know you want another Dead Rising already. We asked your mom and she said you loved the first game, so we're glad to be in agreement there.

Im on the fence about Dead Rising...I remember playing and saving the game only having to start from the beginning each time. Only with accrued experience and clothing (items too if i can remember). My cousin and i thought the game/ system was bugged. We swore up and down that we saved the game at specific times. Only to have to take on the same non zombie mall lunatics every time. Lets just say i stopped there... Its was like Left 4 Dead -2.5...

By giving more people the opportunity to play them?Gotta love broken logic. Didn't enjoy Lost Planet but a Dead Rising sequel for either of the powerhouse systems would rock hard.

Look mista, i support the 360 heavily, but cheap shots are, well....
Just plain cheap...Really and truly, this is the new Joystiq, If we are going to rant, degrade, slander someone or something. Be good at it.

You can blow those problems out of proportion all you want, but the fact is, quality developers like Valve won't even touch the PS3 cause it's such a chore to develop for, and many multi-platform games run worse, or are just flat-out canceled for the PS3 due to the way Sony chose to build the system (a side effect of trying to be as proprietary and money hungry as possible.)
Hyams @ Jan 28th 2009 12:09PM

Alright a few things first and foremost:
1. IBM is a service company. A majority of its business is aimed at helping other businesses via full suite solutions. In other words they offer servers software and support to run a business. Wal-Mart and Target for example run IBM. eBay does too. Actually most companies you can THINK of run on IBM.
2. IBM's stock price in 2k7-2k8 nearly hit 130. After bad stuff happened they dropped to 60. IBM buys large numbers of other companies in order to gain patents and skillsets. These buyouts usually range from many millions to a few billions and take quite a bit of time to plan out. There's a really really really good chance that IBM started buying several companies during that "we're rich" phase and then lost a few billion dollars during the "oh crap" phase. As such regardless of how well they are apparently doing they still dropped 70 points in the market while spending a few billion dollars. Not good.
3. The RA's (resource action - IBM term for layoffs) started last week. IBM announced its 4Q08 earnings the day before. IBM before the announcement was still in the 78-82 range for its stock price. I can guarantee then that the RA plans started back in November - the ball started rolling per se. As such someone in IBM noticed that fat needed to be trimmed and started. Once started it is too late to turn back.
4. People aren't screwed yet. There's a reason IBM hasn't officially announced anything yet - nobody has left. People flagged for an RA have 30 days within IBM to find a job - otherwise they get offered a package or retirement bridge and are let go. Now given the current situation I know now all of the 4000 or so people are going to luck out and get to stay. BUT IBM has an internal job site that is pretty much always hiring (internally only of course). So I imagine a good number of them have a chance.
You can bitch and moan and scream that they're a horrible company all you want but in the end it's all just business. Honestly I'm more annoyed at the European operations in IBM - thanks to the political climate there it is DAMN difficult to lay people off. Easiest place? USA.

At this point in the game, most devs have a grip over the PS3's architecture, and I've played some damn fine looking games for the PS3. At the same time, I've played more multiplatform games that didn't suffer from the transition as I have multiplatform games that did, though I do agree with you in that there are too many. The issue there, though, is that PS3 multiplatform games are typically ports of their 360 brethren. The ones that are designed with both systems in mind usually end up with no significant issues on either console.
Gonzo @ Jan 28th 2009 12:16PM
Sounds like UNS is pissed.
I bet it's because the first Dead Rising RRODed his 360, and it wasn't worth it.
Or is it because he may have to switch discs for the sequel?
Brucie_K @ Jan 28th 2009 12:15PM
Dead Rising 2? Yes, please! :D
Chin-Poh (I wuv you Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged!) @ Jan 28th 2009 12:18PM
Scrap that $200 million Lost Planet movie and redistribute those assets to these sequels, and maybe sequels to some forgotten franchises. I hear Marvel Vs Capcom 3 isn't possible because Capcom lost the rights to the license? : (
Mr Khan @ Jan 28th 2009 1:30PM
I agree that a $200 million Lost Planet movie makes no sense. Very few people even know what Lost Planet is really about, and then you're going to have problems when the movie almost inevitably sucks
It could be Capcom's "Spirits Within"
Chin-Poh (I wuv you Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged!) @ Jan 28th 2009 12:18PM
Haha, so many 360 fanboys are happy to see PS3 titles come to the 360 so that more gamers can enjoy them but complain when 360 games come to the PS3. No double standards and hypocrisy please.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 28th 2009 12:19PM
Having all systems now (Suck it fanboys) I'm not sure for which system I would buy DR2.Everything started with the xbaucks so I guess I should continue there but then again if a game shows awesomeness in the xbox 360 is probably that I'll make the poor apparatus burst in flames.
Oh what the hell if the achievements are as hard or even more I’ll go for the x360 version but regardless of the version please place some sort of save system in infinity mode. The lack of a proper saving system in the xbox 360 during infinity mode killed all the fun in said mode.
waynski1457 @ Jan 28th 2009 12:19PM
You're forgetting one thing: these are Capcom games and they have already proven that their shared engine runs beautifully on both systems.

"Sony never honors their warranty and blames anybody but themselves when something goes wrong, MS on the other hand spent billions to give everyone a 3+ year warranty that is free."
What does any of that have to do with this here?
I've not read a single comment here so far that sounded like a '_DF' or console warrior's post except for yours just now.
Xta Large (Formerly Fatass) @ Jan 28th 2009 12:23PM
Alright, I didn't see Gonzo's. But still. I don't see why you're so up in arms about a game coming to a console that you clearly don't own. This is only good news, because more gamers get to play a good game... is that too hard for ya to understand?
SoulBlade @ Jan 28th 2009 12:23PM
"MS on the other hand spent billions to give everyone a 3+ year warranty that is free."
Maybe the 30%+ failure rate and the bad press was finally getting to them and they had to do something about it...
Capcom is the type of dev that's got a lot of experience developing for multiple platforms - they've probably got a lot of tools that help out when targeting both. Ports from a 360 version to a PS3 usually hurt the PS3 version, but that doesn't hurt your precious console so I'm not sure what your problem is. I think you're just pissed seeing what you thought was a 360 exclusive go to the PS3, in which case, grow up.
kidhero1000 @ Jan 28th 2009 12:26PM
Didn't Capcom go on record saying they wouldn't do exclusives anymore?
Yep. They also said that 2009 is the "year of the multi-platform title".
west @ Jan 28th 2009 12:29PM
Multi-plat would be pretty great. To date, Dead Rising has been the only reason I still consider buying an Xbox 360. That might change though if all this exclusive DLC garbage doesn't change.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 28th 2009 12:27PM
Is funny but I remember I was the first person that started using Cleric in my names because Mage was so overused. My name in NWN was Clockworkcleric,Mustage Royal Mage/Assassin or Detrion.
At some point in time those names became popular maybe because I pwned at NWN although the names of the other guys who also used to pwn at nwn never became that popular.
AnonymousFinger @ Jan 28th 2009 12:32PM
The biggest reason for devs to support only the 360 over the PS3 is because of attach rate and installed base, not difficulty in programming. The software attach rate and installed base is much higher on the 360, which means more income from the 360 version.

"Do you have any idea where we are?" he finally said to break the
awkward situation, letting his eyes wander up to the sky for a moment
as he stared at the strange half-sunrise all around them. The phrase
"hot dog princesses" came to mind for some reason, but he shoved the
thought away. "This is weird... it's almost like a Genjutsu or
something..." He didn't know much about the nature of the illusions,
but Bokusatsu had a feeling that this place could possibly be the
product of one. When he turned to look at her again, he remembered
the ring and glanced at it for a moment. "I think... something wants
us to fight."

Tony @ Jan 28th 2009 12:34PM
At the end of the day, the only "proof" here either way is that Capcom already ported Lost Planet to the PS3 and most people agree it wasn't handled well.
I don't care what systems get these games, but I would prefer it was done right. Hopefully Capcom will improve on its previous effort.
UNSCleric @ Jan 28th 2009 12:36PM
My "Cleric" is referring to Christian Bale's role in Equilibrium, nothing else.
Xta Large (Formerly Fatass) @ Jan 28th 2009 12:38PM
They also brought DMC4 to the PS3, which was clearly done right. I'd say that at this point they know what they're doing as far as developing for the PS3 goes.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 28th 2009 12:43PM

Does that mean we should deny Wii gamers the joy that 360 owners had in surviving three days in a zombie-infested mall? The answer is, obviously, no.
Okay, a fair point, but how about PS3 owners? Why don't we the joy of unrepentant zombie slaughter? I have the 360 original (bought the system to play it, in fact), but I would gladly, even this long after release, pay full price for a PS3 port of Dead Rising. C'mon, Capcom, if this is the "year of Multiplatform" like Inafune said, make it happen.

crackp1pe @ Jan 28th 2009 12:58PM
One important item I think people are forgetting to mention is that all Capcom game development occurs on a PC dev platform called 'MT framework' which then basically just gets compiled into PS3 or 360 versions. It's why DMC 4 looked basically identical on both platforms, but did have the lengthy install-- their PC dev environment expects to be able to pull some data into RAM more quickly than the BluRay drive on PS3 can deliver.
The point is, it requires minimal extra effort for a game that Capcom is developing for 360 to have a PS3 version at this point. So without a doubt you'll see any big titles from Capcom on both platforms, including Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2. Sure the 360 has a bigger installed base, but they aren't going to ignore the 18m+ PS3 base when it doesn't require much extra work at all to deliver to it.
Levi @ Jan 28th 2009 4:28PM
you sound like you know a bit of what you're talking about, so I'll ask you: Is BD not as fast as DVD for loading data into memory because of the size of the discs? I remember hearing somehwere that BD has this great ability to stream media, but this would make sense if it were the case... Media can be streamed fast from it if the player knows right where to go, but pulling data from all corners of the disc would take more time coming from a much larger storage medium.
I'm just thinking out loud.
