Zero Punctuation chainsawdomizes Gears of War 2
24
After what seems like a breathless eternity, Yahtzee has finally reviewed Gears of War 2 for Zero Punctuation. The verdict: He likes it. Naturally, he levels a few complaints at the game, most notably the strange abundance of chest-high walls on the planet Sera. Overall, the review praises the game as a good mainstream title with a a healthy amount of variety (a little too much variety in the case of level design). Find the review after the break.

Great review, I wish Yahtzee would go in-depth with multiplayer modes in his reviews, as in Gears it is 75% Multiplayer, 25% Single.

ya if u have watched Yahtzee b4 as well as his Halo 3 "review", u know he never talks about online. So far all the games only talk about SP, even his Orange Box review he did not talk about TF2 a lot or even a little.... lol

Yeah - He's not into MP reviews. It would be nice, but I think Yahtzee would prefer throwing his controller out the window than socialize and play with other twats.
That said, I HATE the MP in Gears 2. No player matches, lag for the sake of lag, crappy hosts, idiots who care about their ranks and more polish than Warsaw.
I liked the simple and the grit of Gears 1. I'm going to replay it with my friend just because it was that much better.
How many "oh crap!" moments were there in 2? yeah, it looked better, but so did the second Matrix movie, and I think we all know how that fared when up to the first.

@Cal
Was terrible? It still is ;)
And always will be. Yet... I... keep... playing.
Must go back to Gears 1, or something else. I don't know why I let myself get constantly beaten down by this junker of a matchmaking/laggy ass online game.
Horde mode still rocks the house tho ;)

I love the extra "note" he adds in the end credits. "I wish there were some kind of award for world's most pretentious trailer" LOLOLOLOL!

Does anyone else hate the new canned intro as much as I do? I miss the old ones, that were tailored to each ep individually.

He made a comment about this in one of the episodes being "the price of popularity." He used to use the copyrighted songs without paying for them, but is unable to do that now that he's more well known.

I found Gears 1 to be alot better than Gears 2.. Gears 2 tried to be be too varied, Dom was still rubbish.. I went straight to Hardcore on co-op, than Insane solo, and Dom doesn't get that a shield boomer standing over you is not a good thing, so often your having to kill things for him as he fires off 8 rounds on the lancer then ducks down for 30 secs & just sits there.. often finding fails were down to him getting splattered, or bleeding out - because he ran halfway across the battlefield, getting himself raped leaving you to kill 8 or so enemies before he dies.. which is worse than when they used to just hide or 'run away' when you got to just before the mansion in Gears 1...
AI problems are in the bots too, the full AI team groups together, but your 'team' mates just run in & die as they respawn.. only warzone seems playable.. when you go down/die they take an age getting to you, if they even bother, leaving the enemy to stamp on your face (in any mode).. soon as your dead, they chill out to shooting occassionly, even (usualy on Wingman) sharing the same side of a wall as an enemy team, while they 'toggle' targets, ignoring those in full view (see for yourself, you can see from their view point..)
I was happy just shooting stuff, on foot, or in a vehicle, but just dodging my way through room after room of traps, gets dull. Then you have Dom crying his way through the game. there was nothing that was really a boss either.. Cliffy B with hopefully put things right in Gears 3.. Gears 2 just felt a little like a training camp..

I still haven't quite understood the Bioshock-ish level that Gears of War 2 had. It just seemed like Cliffy B was so inspired by Bioshock, he had to put in a similar level without any rhyme or reason. At least when Condemned 2 did it, it made a little sense.
