Analyst Dough Creutz of Cowen Group believes GTA: Chinatown Wars is as much a test for Take-Two as it is for Nintendo. Gamasutra reports on Creutz's bullish investor note, where he expresses that the title will reveal Take-Two's "ability to make inroads" on Nintendo's platforms.
On the flip side, he expresses that Nintendo wants Chinatown Wars to succeed because it appeals to core gamers, whom Creutz apparently thinks Nintendo still gives a Yoshi's turd about.

It seems like the only news I've heard about this game is the "edgy" drug selling mini game

Classic R* fashion that the game gets a label based on one aspect of the overall package before it gets released. I don't see what's the big deal.

If buzzword gamers can't find something to play on the DS, they aren't looking hard enough.
They aren't even looking in the same direction.

"a Yoshi's turd" ... sounds ... cute?
GTA IV is a pretty sick game though tedious at times. I'm just hoping this goes back to the top down roots that made the series great in the first place. I don't see myself buying this right away but will probably eventually pick it up on some kind of Amazon gold box sale. The DS doesn't have a shortage of games in any sense of the word but does have a shortage of "mature" titles. I'm not sure there is a huge market for this game but I bet it holds it's own.

The DS doesn't need Grand Theft Auto to appeal to 'core gamers' (assuming that's not a euphemism for PC gamers), but it wouldn't hurt for Chinatown Wars to actually be good. I'm not looking forward to another Tenchu: Dark Secrets or anything similar.

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say because there are no helicopters in this game. Good eye, by the way.

really good eye! but there are helicopters in the game (if i remember correctly). And they are using the topdown-perspective with a rotating cammera. everything i've read about this game sounded pretty good and solid. check out the preview explosion http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/20/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-preview-splosion/

Lets just hope that they pass this test. So far, all impressions seem positive. Then again, almost ALL impressions are positive...

I am so hopeful for this game, I can't wait to get it :D
And I really hope they don't get a lot of criticism for the drug-dealing mini-game, even though it's bound to happen.

If Nintendo did still give a Yoshi's turd about core gamers they'd be publishing The Conduit not Sega.

I can't be the only one who thinks the Conduit looks blah...
It's wonderful that a developer is listening to what the buzzword gamer wants, but that doesn't stop the game from looking uninspired and pretty dang bland at points.

First... Core Gamers and Casual Gamers aren't some magical divide no matter what most of the companies, Nintendo included, are thinking.
Second... as fatass said, Conduit looks rather meh. The MAIN hype machine behind this game is the fact that it's a Wii exclusive. Take that one element away from it and everything that was every uttered about Haze and Turok would be flying that games way with a vengeance. It could be good, but if it wasn't for the Wii Cult that's latched onto any even remotely decent looking game as a second coming, we would be just as disinterested in the game as Fear 2.
Third... It's about time hardcore gamers quit BITCHING about casuals and fucking DO something about it. Introduce them to some better games. Period. Example? Christmas before last, my mother wanted a DS Lite and a copy of Brain Training 2. My stepfather bought the system, I was in charge of getting the game. KNOWING she had a past with D&D, I bought her Puzzle Quest. Now, if she ONLY got Brain Training 2, she would right now be hating gaming in general. But because she ALSO got Puzzle Quest, she's officially beaten the game with every class... twice. And so I lent her Final Fantasy III and she loved it. Then she bought Pokemon Diamond. She's currently playing through Crono Trigger. It's up to the GAMERS to get the casuals into the better stuff. Just don't get pissed when they forced you to play Chicken Shoot because it's a shallow and "fun" game.

You know what they should have done is release this during Chinese New Year, which is happening right now!

Well, that wouldn't be testing the waters so much as jumping in(the budget for GTA on Wii would have to be much higher, and a simple port of an earlier GTA would also be a poor test for how well a GTA:Wii would do).

I still predict that this game will be insta-banned in the UK, at least after a vocal panic-campaign by the Daily Mail.
We regard drug use on the same level as sex over in the US, pointless panic and parental shouting, but its enough to fuck up game companies.
Rockstar should know this, and are taking a big risk with the drug dealing mode.

Surely Rockstar rely on that kind of controversy for their UK sales. They're UK-based, after all, they know about the Mail... (Leeds, iirc, in the case of this particular game.) They need to have something to get the game in the news, some kind of hook for that 'OMG a violent game on the little kid's console that i got my 3-year-old' story. 'And now little Timmy wants to be a drug dealer when he grows up!'
Game *looks* fantastic thus far, so if the reviews are sufficiently positive I'll get a copy at or soon after launch.

It's pretty hilarious how Rockstar can use that controversy to spur sales. You know, I just think it's awesome how they can just manipulate the sheeple mainstream garbage press like that.

I usually stay out of those discussions but why did FFXIIIAngelVanille voted down exactly?
