Kuju Entertainment confirms staff layoffs
(For the sake of the blogging community, we're going to set up a template for posts describing gaming industry firings, a topic which has depressingly comprised about one-third of everyone's news coverage as of late. By copying and pasting the following paragraph and swapping in the appropriate company name, information and nautical metaphors, we'll save time and effort which we can spend on more uplifting endeavors.)
Representatives from [Kuju Entertainment], [developer] of [Batallion Wars 2 and Geometry Wars: Galaxies], confirmed today that they have laid off [a number of employees] across a few of their studios, including [Kuju America, Chemistry, and their corporate headquarters]. In addition, [ten] employees at their subsidiary, [Zoë Mode], the minds behind [You're in the Movies and Rock Revolution], are ["at-risk"]. As always, we wish the recently unemployed the best of luck, and hope that [Kuju Entertainment] can [stay afloat in these tumultuous economic waters].

When worse comes to worst, we can use bottle-caps for currency.

Why did that game never look that good when I played it?

Nothing like injecting a little humor into these depressing times.
AoE @ Jan 29th 2009 5:50PM
Holy shit, game companies I am buying games as fast as I possibly can, will you please stop laying people off?!
...Jan... @ Jan 29th 2009 5:51PM
Aw man. BWii was a fun high quality strategy game. Now we'll never get BWiii with Wii Speak support. Why couldn't it be the other way around (Zoe Mode developers laid off and the Kuju people at risk)?
Oh well. I hope they can find jobs after this.

We're seeing alot more of Griffin on the weekdays. Hey, where's the Webcomiq Wrapup?!
Haggard @ Jan 29th 2009 5:55PM
I don't think you understand just how significant his pay rise was. He can afford to send a robot out to do college for him.
sam @ Jan 29th 2009 5:55PM
Did you just say 'minds' behind 'Rock Revolution'? Are you *sure*?
That aside, of course it's always sad to hear news of people losing their jobs. Let's hope they don't end up having to work for Asda...

Although this is sad news (as all of the current economic news is), it is an opportunity to mention Geometry Wars: Galaxies for the Wii. I believe this is an underrated game, and fell off many people's radar. It's cheap, it's great, and, if you only have a Wii, this is a must buy.
And only enjoyable with the classic controller (sorry Kuju!).
Xta Large (Formerly Fatass) @ Jan 29th 2009 6:29PM
Seriously. If you're a buzzword gamer, this is one of the best games you can find on the Wii. It's easy to sit down for an hour or two and get lost in the game, but it's also something you can jump into for five or ten minutes before ya go to work.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Jan 29th 2009 6:53PM
I've had the DS version for quite some time now. Excellent for on-the-go gaming. Have considered the Wii version... but maybe when it's cheaper...
Wubbytoes @ Jan 29th 2009 7:45PM
Galaxies is definitely one of the best third party games on the Wii. I didn't really have a problem using the waggle controls though. I kind of go 50/50 classic controller and waggle, depending on what I feel like.
D_Average @ Jan 29th 2009 6:18PM
This sux, Galaxies is one of my favorite Wii games.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Jan 29th 2009 6:21PM
BWiii OR BUST! PLEASE?!?!?
Ken Seang @ Jan 29th 2009 6:49PM
This definitely sucks, I loved playing Battalion Wars on the gamecube...
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Jan 29th 2009 6:54PM
Yep, a template is definitely needed... Too much staff shrinkage going on....
I'm curious as to how big the game industry (meaning only publishers and developers) is now compared to one year ago...
Tom @ Jan 29th 2009 8:53PM
Wow, that really sucks. BWii was an incredibly fun game, and Geometry wars was fun wherever you played it. Hopefully they can still get jobs elsewhere.
Ghede @ Jan 29th 2009 9:31PM
Aren't those the same guys that mangled Dark messiah of Might and magic's multiplayer? Good riddance. All the game needed was decent online play and it could have been a classic.
redjack @ Jan 30th 2009 12:14AM
So does this mean they cut some people from Headstrong Games as well?
Schmobu @ Jan 30th 2009 5:08AM
Hmm they had such a great idea for a game but failed to pull of alot of it, more in depth characters like warcraft with aleast 4 characters per team, (Battalion CO, 3 Company OCs( stupid military term but Commanding officer and Officer commanding)), better controls, larger more tactically free battlegrounds, a set of tutorial missions so you can use all vehicles in each campaign, VS AI or local multiplayer, Co-op, Hand to hand infanty, unit abilities, stance control, tactical environents (cover).
