It's funny to think that just 5 years ago people thought Nintendo would do a Sega and go third party.

...now Sony and Microsoft are their bitch.

Nintendo has always operated at a profit, though. Those of us (myself included) who thought they were going to go third party didn't have the whole picture.

If they had kept walking down the path they had, they might have become niche, but there would be no reason for them to go 3rd party financially (now, being totally niche means no room for growth, which in turn might be a compulsion to go 3rd party, but that's beside the point)

So now that they're back on top, do you think we'll have Mario and Zelda brand cereal again?

I can't keep eating the reserve cereal I bought on ebay. My doctor says if I keep eating 20 year old novelty food 'm going to die ;_____;

Nintendo is poised to take over the world... OK at least the video game world.

They have more than enough cash to hire all these laid off developers, and maybe they'll score at least one good game this year!

OK flame over... seriously, they have the cash to get their next gen machine launched in 3yrs, with really good ames. I know Sony and MS (well MS has the cash too, but they are being conservative right now) wish they were in the same position. Hopefully they learn from SOny and not go from being at the top, straight express down to the bottom.

The "problem" is, they care about fun, not next-gen.

Should be a good year for them. Wii Fit is still understocked, DSi is around the corner, Wii itself is seeing a production boost and growing demand apace, Wii Sports Resort will drop in the middle of the year

On the software front, 3rd parties are finally starting to come around with some real support between SEGA's big 4 for the first half of the year, as well as Ubisoft's little TMNT game and Red Steel 2, Crystal Bearers finally seeing the light of day with full gameplay footage, WiiWare continuing to blossom in time for the storage solution, Dragon Quest IX DS and the fully-featured Phantasy Star Zero. Nintendo has shown a broad array of small but interesting 2nd party projects, and they've got a number of top-secret first and 2nd party games that should be revealed over the course of the year

Except for the top secret part, you're actually right, Sir Khan. I guess there's more coming out than I thought, but then again you covered both Wii and DS.

I'm just afraid any of those games will dumbed down for casuals.

I would add that the Wii could benefit from the cuts among dev studios and publishers in that they have to develop and release games, but the Wii is as much as 1/3 the cost to develop for than the 360 and PS3.

Some devs I know have talked about games flip-flopping whether to develop a game for the Wii or not, for those cost reasons.

Plus, just as studios and publishers had a wait-and-see approach to the Wii's initial sales, I wouldn't be surprised if some are waiting to see how well Sega does with their mature releases.

Finally, with more online game features (like in-game voice chat) and services like the video channels, I think Nintendo has the more to look forward to in sales.

Now just imagine how much MORE money they would have made if the Yen and US Dollar values were where they were back in 2005 or 2006.......

Actually, that's the episode where Cartman founds his own religion and finally gets $1 million, if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure how I feel about this because it's great to a game company reinvent itself and the way games are played, constantly innovating leading the industry, but on the other hand what kind of game industry are we left with when you look long term?

If too many people get burned by crappy Wii games that means they won't take the chance on any games in the future, burning the bridge to that is made to reach them in the first place. At the same time the big N has acknowledged that they are ignoring the die-hard fanbase who bought gamecubes.

We are left with an industry of short attention spanned users who won't know what a quality title is because they are so used to swimming in the fecal matter that is the current 3rd party games produced for the Wii.

Great news at a terrible price.

I would say in the long term, we are better off. so many of grew up playing snes and psx or 64 that we had to have the next gen. if the wii had been marketed to the 360 and PS3 market, how many parents would buy their 5 - 9 year old a 500 -700 dollar system(after a second controller and game) that is full of shooters and blood filled killing. those kids would not have grown up with a system other than maybe a DS. i know for sure if i didnt grow up on mario and zelda or perfect dark and twisted metal, i would not be playing CoD and midnight club on my 360 today. the wii is breading a brand new generation of gamers who as they grow up will start to play mature and "hardcore" games.

JXC, I agree, I'm not stating that Nintendo should have made a different console, just more quality titles for that console, and the future ramifications of the crappy games.

Kenology18, I'm all about the drama.
