Voyeuristic hackers have undone its raison d'être and transformed the PC version of Mirror's Edge into the third-person parkour-em-up that could have been. Mind you, the one that could have been would have featured animation cognizant of the external viewpoint, and not just movements fit for first-person glimpses. It must have been a harrowing experience for those who expected to see Faith's nimble movements and instead received the lifeless posterior of a city-traversing robot.
You'll find instructions on how to coax the camera out of Faith's head at the On Mirror's Edge forums, and a video demonstrating the amusing trickery after the break. Mind the big spoilers after the 3:10 mark.
I mainly looks terrible because the animations where not created for 3rd person, thus there are many animations that are 'missing'. I'm not suggesting that it should be a 3rd person game or that it should have even been an option, I'm just saying don't let a hack color your view of how developers would have made 3rd person version look.
oh i believe that the developes would have made it awesome. as evidenced by the great animation of the other characters in the game that you seen. its obvious they succeeded in showing animation of what body parts they needed and gave the game a great feel.
Love the way her left knee and leg snap to the side as she walks. I haven't played the game, is there any time you actually see the player model? Cause I'm kind of surprised she has that much detail if you were never meant to see her.
There's the opening CG film, and there's one time, right after the first chapter, where you can see your reflection in the windows of the buildings. Other than that, I don't think so.
Yeah, it's weird they even gave her a character model in-game in the first place if you were never meant to see it, though, as vidGuy said above, since it's basically a waste of resources.
Hey thanks for the spoiler heads up Joystiq. I watched this on yesterday and they totally screwed the plot for me. (Haven't played it, but planning on it.) You may be late but at least you're considerate.
Does anybody else remember back before the game came out, in an interview or something one of the developers said that because they were animating for 1st-person, and wanted the animations to be visible and look good from that perspective, that it would probably look pretty damn weird and unnatural in 3rd-person.
Yeah, they said something about even having to exaggerate the movements of the limbs in order to make it look right, even though it looked wacked out in 3rd person. So these movements aren't just what you aren't supposed to see, they are purposefully made stranger so that it will look right from a 1st person view.
