Rumor: Police cars, pursuits returning to Burnout Paradise via DLC
It seems the lazy and inattentive police officers of Paradise City have begun to frown upon the frantic racing and wreckage filling their city, with rumor indicating the return of police cars or possibly pursuits to Criterion's racer. Some scenes depicting the blues in red-hot chase have already spilled onto the internet, as you can see in our gallery below. You can see the potential pursuit mode that showed up in the new Burnout Store right here, as well as images for a new cop car in the game. Will these become available as DLC in the future? We've asked for comment and we'll get back to you as soon as we get word.

What do you mean returning? This would be first time a Burnout game had cops in it.
nakedatthecomp @ Jan 29th 2009 11:35AM
maybe they were thinking of NFS Hot Pursuit...?
required @ Jan 29th 2009 11:40AM
I'm pretty sure that both Burnout Dominator and Legends have police cars.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 29th 2009 11:55AM
Yeah, the only other Burnout game I own is Legends for the PSP, which has pursuits.
offday @ Jan 29th 2009 12:14PM
Ohh. I only played the console versions. I guess I never really considered those to be true sequels.
Maverick Saturn @ Jan 29th 2009 12:19PM
Never disregard the PSP >.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jan 29th 2009 12:43PM
Burnout and Burnout 2 both had Pursuit mode. As well as the Burnout Compilation on Xbox that came out before 3 but had many more Crash puzzles.
Gonzo @ Jan 29th 2009 12:53PM
Actually the original Burnouts had police chases. The good one (the first one) for the PSP brought it back but not to the greatest effect.
The only thing that would get me to buy Burnout Paradise again (already bought played, then sold it when my replacement ps3 wouldn't load the data) is if they brought back crash junctions. The showtime event is like a chuck e cheese version of it. Until they bring back crash junctions, the Burnout franchise is dead to me.
You hear me?! I have no Burnout!
WiredKnight @ Jan 29th 2009 1:31PM
How would this be any different from a 1-on-1 marked man/rampage?
Duke @ Jan 29th 2009 1:52PM
Crash junctions were the best!
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jan 29th 2009 1:54PM
Truth be told, it's exactly like Marked Man except against a single AI/player. Also, one would have to be a cop.
As for how it's different from Rampage, well, rampage is the as takedown, right?
offday @ Jan 29th 2009 3:38PM
I played the heck out of the Burnouts on Xbox and I never remember police cars...
Bennyishere @ Jan 29th 2009 7:45PM
Burnout 2 had a lot of police chases. It was one of the ways you unlocked new vehicles.
nakedatthecomp @ Jan 29th 2009 11:35AM
holy crap, Criterion - I love you.
Michael @ Jan 29th 2009 11:38AM
That would be hot just like Hot Pursuit which was the last best Need for Speed
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 29th 2009 11:38AM
I still have it for PC in fact I'm staring at it right now.
chrisyz @ Jan 29th 2009 11:39AM
This game just never runs out of DLC, does it?
Deeznuts420 @ Jan 29th 2009 11:59AM
please dont jinx it :(
nakedatthecomp @ Jan 29th 2009 12:07PM
*knocks on wood*
Maverick Saturn @ Jan 29th 2009 12:21PM
Lets hope it stays that way, its one of the few DLC offering games I still enjoy
DjDATZ @ Jan 29th 2009 1:26PM
I hope not. Criterion have made this game into more of a platform than just a game. They can basically now add whatever they want...
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 29th 2009 11:40AM
I hope the ultimate version includes this.Burnout is getting a lot DLC.
Joe @ Jan 29th 2009 11:40AM
I hope this isn't the first DLC you have to pay for
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jan 29th 2009 12:45PM
The first DLC you have to pay for will be that dune buggy island that completely reworks the entire physics engine and has that stunt park. But considering everything they gave you for free above and beyond competing products in this genre, don't be a cheap bitch.
Deaddy @ Jan 29th 2009 1:46PM
Wrong, first paid DLC is the party pack, coming out next week.
Joe @ Jan 30th 2009 12:51PM
Too bad I just sent this game back to gamefly
Joe @ Feb 6th 2009 7:24PM
I told you this will be the first paid content
IJuan @ Jan 29th 2009 11:44AM
Isn't that a picture of the existing cop car that is already int he game?
Vincent @ Jan 29th 2009 11:57AM
That's what I was thinking...I believe it's the cop car already in the game
Vincent @ Jan 29th 2009 12:28PM
Someone hijacking my e-name!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 29th 2009 1:04PM
Yep. It's the Hunter Citizen. The game already has two good cop cars, so all they need to do now is add pursuit mode.
And maybe make it so when you turn on your lights the other cars on the road move out of the way.
DJcube @ Jan 29th 2009 11:45AM
For those who asked: The pursuit mode was in Burnout 2. It's basically evolved into Road Rage (you just have the option of choosing any car). Various Burnout games have had police cars (and police F1 racers) since then.
Also, the "new" police car in those screenshots is the Hunter Citizen, which has been in the game since the very start.
Still, it would be interesting to see what the PDPC pack.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Jan 29th 2009 11:52AM
I was hoping it was like in Hot Pursuit.
I loved using the spike stripes. Now that this game reminds me of Midtown madness except it is on turbo roids.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 29th 2009 12:03PM
No, in Burnout Legends, there were both Pursuit and Road Rage. In Pursuit, you were a cop car and had to focus on one criminal and chase him down and wreck his car before you wrecked yours, while Road Rage involved picking any car and then trying to crash as many cars as possible before time limit or you had too many crashes.
DJcube @ Jan 29th 2009 12:22PM
My mistake. I've only played the official Burnout games (as in the ones developed by Criterion).
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jan 29th 2009 12:47PM
Apparently you didn't because that's EXACTLY how Burnout Pursuit works in Burnout 2. It wasn't Road Rage at all. One player was the criminal and had to get away, one player was the cop car and had to stop him.
Yingerman @ Jan 29th 2009 11:49AM
OMGOMGOMG! I luvs u Criterion!
Tim Parsons @ Jan 29th 2009 11:51AM
WOW that'd be F"ing awesome!!
mahunoy @ Jan 29th 2009 11:54AM
Woot! bring it on!
dowerc @ Jan 29th 2009 11:56AM
There were pursuits in Burnout 2 and Burnout Legends and also the cop car pictured is the Hunter Citizen which has been in the game since its relase and so has the Kreiger PCPD Special.

Shader @ Jan 29th 2009 11:57AM
Considering all the DLC you get with this game there's not much point in buying any other arcade car game. No wonder NFS didn't do so well.
linebeginstoblur @ Jan 29th 2009 12:00PM
Even though it was first released LAST January, since, you know, they're re-releasing it as "The Ultimate Box"... can this PLEASE already be a top contender for Game of the Year again? I've never heard of any developer doing the kinds of things Criterion is doing. I'm honestly shocked. I preordered the game as soon as I could, so I've watched it grow, and where other developers would have pushed the game aside and worked on Burnout Paradise 2 (and I'm sure EA has pressured them to do that), Criterion somehow is able to push that aside and make Burnout Paradise one of the best (if not THE best) racing game of this generation.
The only thing I don't like about this is that now, to show my support, I feel like I have to buy all DLC to help support them. I'm not saying it's bad to pay them, I'm just saying I'd feel really guilty if I didn't get it all! They work so hard and they've become a model that ALL developers should look up to and take notes from.
BxGT @ Jan 29th 2009 12:04PM
This is something that we as gamer don't appreciate until it's too late.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 29th 2009 1:07PM
It's sad Burnout:Paradise was largely forgotten in GOTY awards (or even nominations). Not only is it an excellent game with a ton of play value, but it's beautiful, having the graphic beauty of GTA4 but with a 60fps framerate instead of 14fps.
And to top it all, its style of online play is definitely going to be highly influential on future games of all sorts (and yes, I understand Test Drive: Unlimited did this first, just not as well).
Deeznuts420 @ Jan 29th 2009 12:00PM
criterion are the kings of DLC.
Kevin @ Jan 29th 2009 1:59PM
Valve says hi.
BxGT @ Jan 29th 2009 12:03PM
That would make an awesome game of manhunt in paradise city but with cars.
nakedatthecomp @ Jan 29th 2009 12:09PM
how is Criterion making money?!
Joe H @ Jan 29th 2009 1:22PM
I'd imagine the in-game ads get them a pretty healthy revenue stream... Not to mention that anything they give away for free getts more people playing again, which gets more eyes on the ads.
AndyS @ Jan 29th 2009 12:10PM
There are already two cop cars in the game. The one in the screenshots is the "Citizen". The other one is the "Krieger PCPD Special" which is a burning route winnable version of the F1 looking open wheel car.
On the 360, pushing down the left stick activates the lights/siren.
