"the line-up for PSP in 2009 is two or three times stronger than it was last year."

Ah sweet! We're getting 3 more good games this year!

But seriously, I've been playing my PSP quite a bit lately. MGS: PO and Final Fantasy VII-IX on the go can't be beat!!

This year I think I'll be playing my DS more however. What with GTA: Chinatown and PSO coming out.

I would say that the thing that the PSP needs most is a second analog stick. Does Sony ever learn?

I agree as do every other psp owner out there. PSP could be so much bigger and have more potential if they just incorporated that 2nd analog stick. Or try and be more original and not have so many ports that are ps2 games. I loved Crisis core and everything but I only really played it at home.

Thats why i am looking forward to Loco Roco 2 and Patapon 2. Some on the go gaming!!! Learn from Nintendo Ds on this one Sony. Its a portable not a home console.

I still don't get how people think you could use a second analog stick on the PSP. I mean seriously, put your hands on a PSP like you're playing a game, then pretend that next to the 4 face buttons there's another analog nub.

Now, how are you going to hold this thing? How are you going to switch between the analog nubs? The strength of the dual analogs with the Sixaxis is that you've got 4 shoulder buttons you can hit (comfortably) while using the analog sticks.

The only way this would work out well is if there was some kind of dual pistol-grip thing the PSP would sit down into, like a docking station shaped like a big Sixaxis.

Oh well, another day, another wacky solution to Sony's problems, like a $300 price drop or full BC.

The PSP2 will have the second analog. The current PSP cannot be so upgraded because it would leave tens of millions of existing owners out in the cold, which just can't happen - talk about Sony consumer alienation! And you thought it was bad before?

No problem with holding a dual-analog device unless you're missing some fingers. Certainly no more difficult that holding a DS in your hands while hitting buttons and moving with the stylus. You just brace the device with your remaining three fingers, run the buttons and analogs with your thumbs and the shoulders with your index fingers. In short, you use it the same way you already do, except you'd have an option for buttons + analog on the right just like it currently is on the left.

Sometimes it seems people just don't think these things out when they post comments. Oh well, welcome to the new Joystiq melting pot, rife with people talking about stuff they've never actually owned. -_-

Anyway, I hope the guy is right. The PSP needs a year of 'omg look at all the cool new games!' - BADLY. And I'm talking about US and EU markets getting JP imports. That means YOU, Sony. Plus more 1st Party dev, please. Otherwise, we're looking at the final 12-24 months of the PSP, a far cry from the 10 year cycle they envisioned early on.

Heck, all they'd have to do is add a second analog stick and port much of the PS2 library and you'd have something really good to grab onto. The PS2 library is full of gems that could be replayed portably. But with that hardware shortcoming, porting is impossible, and FPSes are lagging. Not that I would want to play just FPSes. I lament the loss of Elder Scrolls Travels above all.

Cant wait to see what these new games coming are, i would guess one is from incognito because i heard they were having meetings with sony recently.

Also David reeves is a pretty cool guy, but he's so funny to watch give talks! He talks with his eyes closed half the time!

Avoid FFTactics WotL at all costs. I got the iso of the original PS1 FFTactics and put it on my custom firmware PSP, it plays 100% better only it's not widescreen.

It is a horrible port and any time you do ANYTHING, including casting magic and throwing potions to other characters, it grinds to a halt. SE really dropped the ball on it and it's inexcusable.

Oh and you should get Lumines I and II, and the aforementioned GOW: Chains of Olympus and Killzone Liberation. KZ:L has great online play and there are usually people online.

Congrats on your new purchase! I think i saw a message on your PSN ID last night ...

Here are the games that I would consider must own purchases for anyone with a PSP ...

1. Jeanne D'Arc
2. Killzone Liberation
3. God Of War Chains Of Olympus
4. Syphon Filter Logans Shadow
5. Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core
6. Luminies

_________________________________________________________________
I would reccommend the following games as they are all fantastic in my opinion ... (in no particular order)

Resistance Retribution (coming soon, demo is awesome)
Loco Rocco 1 & 2
Pursuit Force 1 & 2
Wipeout Pure & Pulse
Tekken Dark Ressurection
Secret Agent Clank
Burnout Legends
GTA Liberty City Stories
N+
Field Commander
Metal Gear Ac!d 1 & 2
Dark Stalkers Chaos Chronicles
_________________________________________________________________

Also look on the PSN as they have some great games for the PSP now that are very cheap. You can even play downloaded PS1 classic games on the PSP.

Super Stardust Portable (PSN)
Everyday Shooter (PSN)
Echnochrome (PSN)

I own a PSP, but unless you are a raving JRPG/SRPG fan, there's really not much there. Sadly the most compelling uses for a PSP are homebrew apps for playing games from OTHER systems on your PSP.

Sony seems like they've started to get things right with the PSP, but then manage to bungle them.

PS1 games on the PSN store? Awesome, but then the US doesn't get crap compared to other regions.

Digital distribution for PSP titles? Fantastic, I don't have to carry around a bunch of UMDs anymore, and I can save on battery life. Oh hay, but then let's charge you more than you would pay if you went down to your local store and bought the UMD with a case and manual and make the selection terrible in the US!

They need a coherent strategy, and they need to actually pull off the implementation once they come up with a good idea.

Yeah, I played Patapon and God of War, 2008 wasn't really much of a banner year for the PSP otherwise.

There is that new Resistance game and then Locoroco 2 coming this year, which look interesting.

That said, you don't think that Sony has had some huge missteps with the PSP?

VedicHymn, their big mistake has been in not confronting all the false statements. There are a lot of misconceptions that this site and others have campaigned strongly such as the system has "no games" or that the system has "no original titles" and "all ports". These falsehoods are what hurt the system. Sony needs a competent PR department and they need to more aggressively market their wares.

By the way. Other than a lot of games in 2008, Sony also made the store available via the PSP. There you can buy and download what were once only available on UMD, PS1 titles, and a lot more other stuff.

For me, the PSP is only missing Shoutcast support (not the sorry excuse for streaming 'net audio it currently has) and DivX/XviD support. Both of those added and I'd take it literally everywhere with me.

Converting movies to the PSP is a time consuming chore and I shouldn't need to do it. The PSP has plenty of grunt to decode DivX.

haha yeah.... I struggle to think of what Microsoft first party games there are. Once people get over the cell architecture, and most already have, all third parties will be multiplat and the first party games will be the significant ones.

oh, and the restrictiveness of the console i.e. size limits on XBLA compared to PSN etc.

What a breath of fresh air that David reeves. Everyone needs to click the source link and read the entire article because it was just brilliant. Here where some of my favorite highlights.
_________________________________________________________________
Quote ...
"But the videogames industry is inherently very healthy. It's not a question of survival of the fittest, it's the survival of people who are professional, and don't just go around cutting their prices and destroying the market."
_________________________________________________________________
Quote ...
"But we're protecting ourselves with a very hard shell to get through the next one or two years of an economic situation. If you're experienced, you know you have to go into that mode - it's like being an armadillo. You have to be hard, and then you will come out when the sun comes out. "
_________________________________________________________________
Quote...
"But there are people who come in having done their research, thinking, 'PS3 has got all the games, it's free to go online, it's got a Blu-ray player. I know I'm not going to have to ring up the customer careline saying I've got three red lights.'

We recognised that those numbers would go down because we did not drop the price. But we reached the targets we expected to reach under those assumptions."
_________________________________________________________________
Quote...
"At the beginning, we had very few IPs and relied on other people for exclusivity. Now, our strategy is to have 15 to 20 IPs by the time we get to 2009, 2010. We don't have to go to Capcom or Take-Two and ask for an exclusive"
_________________________________________________________________
Eurogamer: So you wouldn't spend a lot of time and money trying to keep MGS exclusive to PS3?

David Reeves: I don't think we would. I'm not ruling it out, but we would sooner invest that money in two years' time, in having another major IP like Resistance or LittleBigPlanet.

Heavy Rain is a good example. That will be, de facto, an exclusive; we haven't just given them a paper bag full of cash, we've built up a solid, long-term relationship.
_________________________________________________________________
Eurogamer: I did a quick search of all the announced games on Games Press the other day. There are 44 listed for PSP, and 185 for DS. That's a worrying margin of difference, isn't it?

David Reeves: I don't know. It depends on the quality of the games, doesn't it? People come out on DS and want to compete against Nintendo first-party, and that's a tough thing.

It's like when you watch six year-old boys play football, and they all follow the ball right the way across the field. Sometimes developers and publishers do that, and that's what they've done with DS. _________________________________________________________________

Regarding Reeve's comments; I'll give credit that Sony is able to ensure that the party line is held constant; namely, the same old, tired message that says "there there, it will get better sometime in the future".

My questions, as always, will be "when exactley in the future will it be better?". At what point, will games start to be released in North America for the PSP? At what point will Sony America support the device as what is seen in the Asian market? Just how long do we have to keep listening to the same rhetoric that tells us to keep waiting? At what point will PS1 games (that are actuall worth owning) be released on the PSN?

To be blunt, we the fanboys have been hearing the same type of speak coming from Sony throughout last year and the year before that. It is not rocket science to recognize that the PSP is on its last legs. Why? Because the public and the retailers will not wait indefinately for some "empty promise" of what's might come at some "undefined future point in time". Case in point, both Bestbuy and Futureshop in my location no longer carry any PSP games in stock - they are all special order. So much for this year being the year of the PSP.
