You have a cool gizmo, a highly desired whatchamacallit and everyone that has ever met you is incredibly jealous. Well, your life is about to get a whole lot better, as rumor has it Apple is looking into creating a premium section for iPhone games on the App store.
The word on the street is that these premium games would also fetch a premium price: $19.99. This dedicated area would only be restricted to a small number of the platform's larger publishers. Of course, neither Apple nor any of the larger publishers developing for the iPhone (Gameloft, EA) were willing to comment on the story.
When will we know more? PocketGamer directs our attention to WWDC (Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference) in June, a likely target for any such announcement.

You're an idiot. Cell phones have more exclusives than any other platform AND a larger base. Once developers get on board you can kiss your precious "consoles" goodbye.
I bet you don't like checkers either. What a jerk face.

Why wouldn't they be "real" games?
All games don't have to be Bioshock or GTA IV quality to be a real game you know. There is a perfectly good market for light pick up and play experiences. Not only that but there are also some pretty deep games on the platform as well. The iPhone and iTouch are not really your traditional cell phone either. It's not quite the same because it has a large touch screen as well as tilt control (forget the name of the device - accel something). But, I assure you even games on older cell phones without a touch screen and tilt control are still real games.
It's just a blanket statement that wreaks of wanting to pick a fight. If that's how you feel then your entitled to that opinion. I respectfully disagree.

Hey what if Square decided to port Final Fantasy IV or VI to the iPhone? It's not like it's out of the question (they port games to everything it seems). Wouldn't you consider those "games"?
Plus, the iPhone has already brought us plenty of games that are leaps and bounds better than what's currently in the mobile market.
Heck it has a full blown SimCity game and it's own GTA clone (Payback).

Guys easy, I was sarcastically trying to rile people up.
I meant what I said, but I get that some people like playing games on their phone. I personally prefer a dedicated gaming device. I don't want to drain my phone battery using a less than optimal control scheme playing an 80 hour final fantasy game, you know? That's what systems like the PSP and the DS are for. I just feel that as of now the idea of the wonder device that does everything isn't quite realized. The iPhone is okay for the right kind of game, but the whole virtual control pad thing they try with the touch screen just doesn't work well enough for my tastes.
But Peggle on it? That could work. I was just busting chops, kids.

The best ones I have seen are tower defense and whatever genre diner dash & sally's salon are.

I wouldn't say there are no 'cell phone games' but replace it with '19.99 cellphones games' and I'd pretty much agree.
iPhone is not a gaming platform despite what iTards and Apple tells you and it definitely shouldn't approach DS and PSP's territory.

@Anam - do you really think the iPhone will somehow steal console sales? If so, give me an example.

Jakka,
That was spoken like someone who has never owned one. It is a pretty viable mobile gaming platform if you ask me. The difference is it's multifunctional where as the PSP & DS are dedicated gaming devices with some other media functionality. I have an iPhone, DS & PSP and for me the iPhone is an awesome device to game with because it is ultraportable compared to the DS & PSP. It shows you have some serious issues with Apple when you insult everyone who owns one as "iTards" which is pretty silly. There are some really great games on it and I consider it a viable casual gaming platform.
Just wait until all of these big developers start developing games for it. Your going to see some amazing stuff that plays to the strengths of the device. Like anything the games need to be optimized to run correctly on the platform. I wouldn't say it will ever rival the DS & PSP as a bona fide contender but it can stand on it's own as a device that provides some wonderful gaming experiences.

I meant that those above are premium games bit not at $20 ... I would never pay $20 for an iPhone game. All those games I listed above are probably are $50-$60 total.

While I love my iPhone, and am happy with most of the games I've played for it, a program would have to be pretty spectacular for me to pay $20.

I agree with you 100%
The game would really have to be something special and without issues for me to pay $20.00. Most good games on there cost a maximum of $7.99 and usually have a 50% sale shortly after.
In all honesty I would pay $20 for a more fleshed out version of Fieldrunners or Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders. The closest games now that would merit a $20 price tag would have to be Payback and Heros of Sparta. A god of war and GTA clone no less.

if they get a game that is comparable to a ds or psp game rather than a game you would play on a flash site like most of the ones that are out now i would gladly pay 20 bucks for it

This is what I wanted to see... and I really think it makes sense. The iPhone App catalogue is becoming larger and larger and it will be more difficult to tell which apps are real gems and which ones are just crapware.
The price I say depends on the title...

I actually like the little .99c games... but only the truly addictive ones, like super kickups...
We dont need BIG games on iPhone, i've got a console/ds for that... soft buttons dont work!

Hi everyone, I'm a bit late on the chat, it's not like I was going any more relevant than anyone else but here is what I think.
I think it's safe to say that people are slightly narrow minded when it comes to defining these portable device. Being a "fanboy" or a "fangirl" is quite a comftarble status unlike simply being rational about the situation.
First, the iPod Touch and the iPhone are multimedia platform. Often, the music player is acknowledge has it's unique feature. The iPod Touch and iPhone is actually a pretty powerful device (memory, speed & rendering) that can actually browse the web, run diverse types of application and support a large array of media files.
These device are now pushing toward their gaming aspect. The Touch Gen are unconventional for gaming, they are somewhat less technical and more intuitive (this is the same reason some may never like the Wii). Because of their nature, a lot of the game released for Apple devices are crap and of homebrew quality. It was the same for the DS when it came out, but Nintendo had more experience in blocking trash from their platform.
It's safe to say that the Apple Premium Games will push the gaming aspect of the Touch Gen even beyond their MVP app's. They have to. Why? Well this brings me to my second point.
The DS and PSP which are what people call "gaming dedicated devices" actually have a lot of multimedia potential. Sony and Nintendo are slowly but convincingly pushing toward multi-functions devices with new firmware, hardware and services just like Apple. Everyone is adventuring in to everyones territory. Thats how capitalism works :P Apple, Sony and Nintendo actions are not really surprising.
I'll watch how things work out for these guys. Fanslaves, choose your camp; technical=PSP, hybrid=DS, intuitive=iPod. Has for me, I'm pretty much versatile.
