Sony: 'We are on track' with PS3 sales

Speaking in an earnings call, Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda has claimed that PS3 sales are still on track with company estimates (via Edge). The executive admitted that the PS3 is trailing behind other platforms, but expects the console to still hit its announced (and conservative) sales target of "10 million units."

The ~~spin~~ clarification comes as Sony announced prepares for a bad fiscal year in the games division. Sales have taken a dip, but at least people might get to keep their jobs.

I really don't see very much diffence from the old, and am having no problems at all. I actually sometimes prefer the mobile site. 10 articles on the page, no crap, straight and to the point.

Actually it was the year of the ps3...in terms of software quality, awesome exclusives came out throughout the year. However, when it comes to sales...not so much the year of the ps3.

meh, i dont know about that. the only "awesome" exclusive for the ps3 to me last year was little big planet. now im not saying that mgs4 was bad, but i hate using the word awesome for games, as everyone uses it, and its objective. while little big planet was unique, fun for all ages, and just a good buy.

It is a funny lot to see that, on days from launch, PS3 has sold more units than X360. People tends to forget there is a world outside USA.

To this date (as for any date), X360 has sold a lot more than PS3. However, the Xbox has had a full year to get ahead. Meanwhile, Sony's still selling PS2...

Yeah we generally don't give a crap about Japan NPC numbers, seeing how crazy anime RPG's are the big sellers, and you can buy used women's underwear from corner vending machines there. Here in the US, PS3 continues to be raped mercilessly by the 360 and the Wii.

That said, if Sony would finally knock a hundred bucks off the price tag, I'd probably buy one. But it looks like that's not going to happen anytime soon, so I'll happily stick with my 360.

If you look at sales from the launch of the PS3 (I.e Ignore the XBox head start) the XBox has actually sold more units.

I mean sure with the exception of December they have done better year over year......who knows.......maybe they changed their projections and didnt tell anyone......or maybe they are anticipating that Killzone 2 will help round up their Fiscal year with a BIG jump in console sales.....heres hoping

They estimated 10 million sold this year, they are at like 8.5 million right now with 2 months to go, I'd say its entirely possible to make their targets.

yea 2 months to go........but hell in this economy one can only HOPE that Killzone 2 will sway people to get a PS3.......reason being is the more people that buy now, the closer it gets them to making a profit, and maybe even this summer a price drop.......

It should be an interesting year for gaming, as long as it isn't just a repeat of 08. Without making any predictions, I'll be interested to see where sales go this year. Except the Wii - it will sell well - news that stopped being interesting a while ago.

It's good to remember that a product, say the PS3 or PSP, doesn't necessarily have to be #1 in competition to be a financial success for a company, and I think it's a safe bet that although neither of these systems will outpace their competition neither of them are anywhere near being "financial/investment failures".

Again, the competition between MS, Sony, and Nint is good for us as gamers, it keeps them working hard to keep us happy and likely means an alternating lead between them in each generation.

Only when one system is left are we screwed.....

I don't think we would be screwed if there was only one console.
I do believe one format of console would be the best bet for makers in the future.
Such as a DvD player, but for games. Each person could pick the system that they like , such as more expensive models of movie players. But each one could play the same standard format of game. And companies like Sony and Nintendo would have there sole purpose to back up the games they provide for this console.

As for the article, i do agree the PS3 is a successful console for Sony when they do there market base of how many console they predict to sell. Right now there on target or very close to it. Where as Nintendo has been saying we are going to sell 100 million units when they only have 40 million units in the stores to buy.

I have no idea on PSP profitability (though I'd guess it's pretty lucrative), but PS3 is to this point a sales and financial failure. The PS3 is bringing down the profits Sony's entire gaming division, and is not only selling the poorest of the three consoles, it actually sold less year on year in the fourth quarter in the US and has been outsold by the 360 in Europe. Th PS3 is a great console with a library to match, but the reality is that the PS3 is not doing well, and if trends continue things will really start to get dire. Now isn't the time to be pleasantly surprised at how well such an expensive console managed to sell in this economy or that the PS3 is actually doing really well if you look hard enough. The Playstation brand has kept the PS3 in this, and now its beginning to fail. Unless January numbers prove otherwise the PS3 needs a jump start to get it back in the game, no more rosy glasses and pretending that nothing wrong.
