Every day is opposite day at BioShock dev 2K Boston. Amidst gray skies and industry layoffs, multiple job postings indicate that the studio is looking to bring a handful of new talent on board, with some or all to lend a hand developing what the company describes as an "action-packed AAA multiplayer title" for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
Nothing else is known of the mystery project other than it will be driven by Unreal Engine 3 -- but these days, what isn't? With multiplayer sorely absent from the original BioShock, and development reins on its sequel in the hands of newly opened 2K Marin, we're now left wondering just what exactly Big Daddy Ken Levine and his followers are up to.

They should make a SWAT 5, too bad they don't have the license though.

If this is true, this is no doubt the game Shawn Elliott is working on.

I loved this game and loved System Shock 2. Yet, I don't think a Bioshock MP would be a good idea. I would fear that it would tear down the rest of the franchise ( I know System Shock isn't part of this franchise!) With so many games having MP now, and it being hard for players to lend substantial time to all the good ones, would this game really gain much of a player base in MP? I doubt it. I would bet it ends up being criticized as just being a useless tacked on feature that took away from the SP experience somehow.

I agree with Duke. Bioshock multiplayer would probably ruin the game for me. Bioshock is my favorite game ever, and if it got spoiled by some crappy multiplayer that was made in a week, it would would leave a bad taste in my mouth. However, if they did it perfectly without a hitch (3 vs. Ultra Big Daddy maybe, or Co-op) I might love the game even more (if that's possible).

Not every game needs MP. I know MP/Co-op is the latest "must-have" feature for all games these days (though its usually a poorly-implemented afterthought), but sometimes rolling solo in a well designed game can be more fun than yet another online multiplayer deathmatch.

Exactly. Some games are built for multiplayer and have a good singleplayer attached (CoD4, Halo 3), and vice versa (Gears).
But you get some games that either wouldn't work in multiplayer (Dead Space, prince of persia), or where it's just such a disappointing afterthought that you wonder why they bothered (Far Cry 2)

This is probably the number 1 unannounced game that I am looking forward to hearing about (hopefully) this year. Mostly because of the X-com rumors, and because I know the quality of games that this studio can put out.

I think BioShock doesn't need any coop (could ruin the ambiance), but having good old fashioned death match and perhaps some cool new takes on different modes would be kind of cool. The plasmids would be pretty fun to use on other people. (As long as you couldn't just use Electro Bolt ++ and an upgraded pistol to smoke anyone with one well placed shot)
I could see balancing being a difficult issue to work with though.
