"While RE5 is very action-heavy, the base RE game design mechanic of holding fast while shooting remains," says the Capcom blog. Newcomers to the series may need to make some "mental readjustments," but the controls have remained this way to establish a sense of risk and danger while in combat. The new controls will instead grant "more natural motion to the second analog stick on your 360 or PS3 controller," allowing you to strafe. We're sure there are strong advocates for both sides of the argument amongst Resident Evil 5's audience. Maybe not Chris Redfield strong ... but strong.
Confirmed: no run-and-gun in Resident Evil 5. Ever.

Isn't it just like the internet to propagate unsubstantiated rumors. The latest such rumor surrounding the upcoming survival horror shooter Resident Evil 5 may have given the game some free publicity, but Capcom has decided that enough is enough. It's squashing the rumor once and for all in its latest community blog post. The "action" controls will not allow you to move and shoot simultaneously. Chris Redfield's testosterone-filled body makes multitasking an impossibility.

I think we got past the 'true Resident Evil' part when 4 came out.

How about walk-and-gun. We're still holding down the aim button, why can't we just walk backwards, instead of having release the button, take a few steps back, the hold it again. We still can't see what's behind us, so that element of surprise can still be there.

i dont get the "true" resident evil talk. burnout paradise isn't "true" burnout and yet the series keeps getting reinvented and, clearly, better. so what's wrong with better? sure maybe capcom doesn't reinvent resident evil every game like criterion does but so what? at least they are evolving the franchise.

You know I really hated how Leon coyuldn't move while aiming in RE:4 but htinking about it if you could move in RE:5 it would be an awful lot like Gears of War or prettier Left 4 dead.

@JerJer:
Resident Evil was always a survival horror game, adding run and gun to this game would make it even MORE like Gears of War like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr ESC said. It's like they completely removed the "horror" part...even the "survivor" part. I wouldn't call that reinventing the series...I'd call it putting a RE skin on an action game.

I think they might get with the times someday but the problem is maybe that Capcom doesn't wanna change the formula without making it a major overhaul and bringing the comparisons to FPS even closer.
It's just like playing Megaman 3 with sliding and Megaman 2 without sliding, It feels like the game got better but you will need to change your play a little bit.
At least they agree the mechanics will need to change in Resident Evil 6.

So am I to understand that people actually believe that, standing still while shooting=scary?
Why don't the developers actually put some effort into the horror so it doesn't rely on how uncoordinated your character is.
And no I'm not one of the people who considered Dead Space to be scary, it relied on gore and "shock", which lost the "shock" when every room played out the same way. It was a good game though, it was fun.

No. You should definitely be able to at least take small steps. There's a happy medium between duck hunt and run-and-gun.
It doesn't heighten the sense of fear, it just makes the game feel clunky and unappealing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If your game needs a button to make your character turn around, you're doing something wrong.

I disagree with the original post completely. RE4 isn't any more real Resident Evil because you have to stand still while you shoot. They turned the series into an action game, but refuse to change the controls to suit it.
There are plenty of ways you could keep the suspense factor of shoot or run. How about the ability to shoot while walking? Or even better, the faster you move, the worse your accuracy... this would lead to the need to stand still to make head shots, but would still allow you to spam shots while running. Not being able to move while you shoot in these games is gimped controls, period.
And I'm a huge fan of the originals, including the tank controls that came with them. My favorite RE is the RE remake on the GameCube. RE4 was a very fun game, but I completely think it would be more fun and no less "real RE" than it already is from the changes it already made.

I'm not sure why you mention Dead Space but actually the thing is that weapons in Dead Space (especially in impossible) aren't really powerful until late, very late in the game.
If you didn't like Dead Space try it on Impossible its 10x times better and it lives to the Survival Horror name. Now that Medium or hard can be pretty light.
RE kicked survival horror in the face I mean the zombies compared to the enemies in Silent Hill,Dead Space,Alone in the Dark or Left 4 Dead are pathetic. I’m glad that in Re:4 they got weapons because they were pretty damn sad if not laughable and even so they move really really slow. I mean it worked in RE:1 to Code Veronica (A.K.A The real Resident Evil 4) because the game was a labyrinth so the speed of the enemies didn’t make a difference but in open spaces they should be faster.
As the series go RE is not bad but there are so much better horror survival games even Capcom made something that had to do with horror than RE, its called Haunting Grounds (Rule of the Rose is Haunting grounds stupid cousin).
If you ask me the best of them all is Fatal Frame 2 with Silent hill series in seconds.

I've always struggled to understand the "lets use archaic controls because its iconic" argument. I also struggle to understand the justification they gave, I don't think it adds "risk and danger" to it, I think it adds frustration. I mean, I don't expect the game to be hardcore FPS/TPS, but a slow walk and shoot would be nice. But the worst part of the controls for me is the aiming. I find it highly frustrating when your aim isn't the center of the screen, why did they implement that? Does it add "risk and danger" too?
I think MGS4 did a great job with evolving the controls. And somehow, it didn't turn into Quake! I know people were upset that you could play it more as a run and gun game, but nothing was stopping them from playing it just like the previous games. In fact it was always encouraged. So did they sacrifice anything? Nope.

The no-run-and-gun controls are just BS at this point. If you need a crappy control scheme to make your game "survival horror", it shouldn't even exist. I mean, I can run and fire a weapon at the same time, and my weapons training consists of going to the firing range and shooting a few different guns one time during Boy Scouts.
If you could run and gun, I would have bought this game. Now, it isn't even worth a rental. Clunky control schemes are things that should be evolving. Using the same shooting mechanics as games that came out before the N64 is a problem. Now, games like Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, etc. show that you CAN have run-and-gun controls in a survival horror game, and still have the horror.
I would just rather have the horror happen in a "Holy **** that zombie just came out of nowhere and caused me to waste 12 bullets on it." then "Oh crap. How am I going to beat this thing without being able to run and shoot it? Stupid controls.". Can't understand the idea that those crappy controls are "preventing the series from becoming just another 3rd-person shooter.". Because if they are...... this game sucks.

Hey Longhorn is here and he is still butthurt.Too bad he woke up before I could pin a dollar to his shirt.
Anyway sadly the archaic controls are the only thing that bond RE to the survival horror genera, yep they don’t make the game any scarier but they make unnecessarily hard like bad physics in adventure games.
The original RE games were really cheesy and like any good zombie game that’s the way they should be.Yeah the whole action things makes the game sell more but the won’t be able to hold this for long.
This is why I consider Dead Rising the best of all the zombies games including Left 4 dead, it might not be scary in fact is the opposite is cheesy but that’s good for a zombie game, is fun and it isn’t pretentious it just wants you to have a good time.
Now that if you want to know what Survival Horror games are all about play silent hill 1 to 3,Dead Space on impossible, Fatal frame 2,Haunting grounds and Clocktower(Honorable mention to Gallerians)

Fakero nobody is saying Dead Space is the RE killer I think you are in a weak attempt to start a flame war except that you can’t start a fire with wet sticks.
Seriously is SW down? I’m sure you can go ahead and start a flame wars there or Casey the king of the (nazi) mods finally snapped and/went lazy, saved time and/Eradicated all the trolls therefore banned everyone?

Ya because the previous title holder for most demo downloads sure sold a ton... oh wait no it didnt. This demo is going to KILL the sales of RE5 just like Star Wars's lame demo. When a demo is this popular and this crappy it doesnt have a good impact on sales. They got cocky thinking everyone would like shitty controls because apparently shitty controls = scary, well they were wrong and its going to cost them millions of dollars in sales.
And guess what, there are more genres than just run-n-gun and stand-n-shoot. Saying RE5 shouldnt be a FPS is a pathetic argument and just a copout trying to excuse its flaws.

Only thing scary are the old controls...
Its fine, stick to the formula they are known for while avoiding comparison to another game. I am not saying implement a zippy FPS style handling (L4D) but do not be afraid of making adjustments Capcom, you might even pick up a whole new fan base...
I am one of the rare people who did not get into RE because of controls. After playing RE 2, i was so thrown off by the controls with the added fear factor that all it did was piss me off. Since then the only time spent with any of the RE's is by watching someone play it. Not condemning RE, just saying, i rather watch someone play it than be scared and frustrated at the same time.

It's stop n pop. It worked great in RE4. If you want to move while shooting play every other third person shooter out there.
What people mistake for 'crappy old gen controls' is a strategic element that separates RE games from every other shooter.
Dead Space has run n gun controls. BUT you slice enemies up to make them weaker. That's how it was able to differentiate from other shooter games in it's controls.
All I gotta say to those people dropping out of RE5: Cry more. The game is gonna be a great ride like RE4 was.

Crap! And today on Xbox Live they did an OXM Inside Xbox video feature on RE5's new features and the head of marketing for Capcom said that the action controls would allow shooting while moving. He said the action controls are for more GoW type players and allows you to "move while shooting, so you don't have to be stationary anymore while moving and shooting."

I saw that video too. I think it came out on Saturday. He said something to the effect: "For you Gears of War fans, we now have the action mode control scheme. You can move while you shoot". That's what was said. It doesn't bother me, I've been playing RE since the beginning. The RE1 directors cut was the game I got with my first playstation.

Be interesting to hear Capcoms response to this one, because if it was wrong, it wasn't a mispeak, it was a flat out lie.
I could care less I'm getting it no matter what, but that is what was said on the video on xbl.

Your guys' mistake was listening to a AMERICAN Capcom rep. Capcom's like Nintendo. The real games are made in Japan. The American subsidiary just markets the stuff.

I'm having a hard time getting excited about this game. What the fudge is it with me having to babysit a (liability) secondary character? What is this, Army of Twoisdent Evil? Crap, Capcom, what the hell? This is the crappiest little gimmick you've added to the RE series. I know that there was something similar done in RE0, but that game was slower paced, thus giving the shitty AI reason to fire one round per minute. But since this is a Gears of War clone what with the advocacy for steroid use and all, I guess you can't expect much when you're attempting to cater to a lesser audience like the Americans. All they can think about is their guns which makes me think that they are compensating for something. I think the Japanese need to stick to what they know best and let the rest of the world produce the (cough, crap, cough) games that they themselves know and love best.

*Sigh* Too bad CAPCOM will never add that to this game. Or any other game. Ever. Period.
