"While RE5 is very action-heavy, the base RE game design mechanic of holding fast while shooting remains," says the Capcom blog. Newcomers to the series may need to make some "mental readjustments," but the controls have remained this way to establish a sense of risk and danger while in combat. The new controls will instead grant "more natural motion to the second analog stick on your 360 or PS3 controller," allowing you to strafe. We're sure there are strong advocates for both sides of the argument amongst Resident Evil 5's audience. Maybe not Chris Redfield strong ... but strong.
Confirmed: no run-and-gun in Resident Evil 5. Ever.

Isn't it just like the internet to propagate unsubstantiated rumors. The latest such rumor surrounding the upcoming survival horror shooter Resident Evil 5 may have given the game some free publicity, but Capcom has decided that enough is enough. It's squashing the rumor once and for all in its latest community blog post. The "action" controls will not allow you to move and shoot simultaneously. Chris Redfield's testosterone-filled body makes multitasking an impossibility.

So Capcom shows some backbone, and prevents the series from becoming just another 3rd-person shooter.

No, more like they made it a 3rd person shooter in every respect EXCEPT the controls. The button layout is a mismatch for the amount of action on-screen. They either need more bullets or fewer zombies; it's simply not balanced.

@Mr.Khan
I loved Resident Evil 4 but in all honesty that wasn't a true Resident Evil game to anyone who has played the other games. After I played the RE 5 demo I didn't feel compelled enough to make it a day 1 purchase. I am still considering it but that Killzone 2 demo will really have to fall flat on it's face to make decide to pick RE up instead.
My whole thing is that Resident Evil is suffering from an identity crisis. It's not survival horror anymore and yet it's not a true shooter either. They need to decide which direction they want to go in. Co-Op was a nice touch to modernize it but I think it's retarded to not offer the ability to run and shoot at the same time.
I've been a huge fan of the series since the first game and when RE 4 came out it was my favorite game of last generation. However, RE 5 just felt like a prettier version of RE 4 with no changes other than co-op. I mean when 4 came out it wasn't Resident Evil anymore so how is being able to run and shoot going to change things for the worse?
I still want to buy the game eventually but I have to admit when I played the demo for 5 I wasn't really all that impressed. I also didn't like the inventory screen not being accessible while the game is paused which is classic Resident Evil. It's like they have moved it towards action but refuse the most simple fixes.

I would MUCH rather have RE5 on the Wii for the controls, as opposed to the nicer graphics.
I think the controls thing is overblown, really. Near as I can tell, it's coming MOSTLY from people who were almost certainly Xbox owners last gen and/or people who primarily play shooters. RE4 is considered one of the greatest games ever and control complaints were damn near non-existent, until the last year and a half or so. This level of complaining about the controls really is rather bizarre to me.

As a big Resident Evil fan, I'm really glad Capcom did this. Not everybody wants gaming to converge into some homogenized action movie.
A lot of people here on internets who would consider themselves to be hardcore are always worrying that gaming is being "dumbed down" to appeal to a wider audience. And what happens when a game comes out that isn't?..... They complain... go figure.

the demo did not grab me (well i was never excited to begin with), the fact that i have to press 2 buttons to run (ps3 version) L1 and X, also the inventory sucks i have to move the cursor to the item i want, press x and again choose if i want to equip it or something else..... y else would i choose the weapon if i did not want to equip it (i know there is a option to give it to your partner but how many ppl will want to do that) also i hate that dam axe dude, i pumped him with 12 shells, 3 punches and still he did not go down but when he hits me i die..... all in all PASS

No you don't, at least on the 360 demo. The inventory is automatically assigned to the D-pad, and you can move the items in your inventory to match where you want to put that gun. One button press equips it. Done and done.

L1 + X recharges buddy, all you need to run is hold x and move the left stick
You can assign inventory slots to the D-Pad so you dont have to open it every time, that rant of yours was very misinformed

Yeah people aren't asking for run & gun, just movement while aiming (and opening your inventory ;D). Anyways I'm still going to probably pick it up, but still think that there are TONS of other ways they could've given the player a sense of risk and danger without relying on these game mechanics.
Posted: Feb 2nd 2009 7:57PM BiggRapp313 said
exactly what I was thinking. I'm not looking to run and gun. just movement while aiming. this shit sucks ass and balls simultaneously. I like the fact they took the majority of the racist "white boy killing a buncha blacks" out of it and let some light skinned people get killed too and I was willing to look past the 5gb install but shit if I can't control the character what the hell's the use of buying it? fuck this game.

"white boy killing a buncha blacks"...please, don't spread this type of ignorance. RE5 is set in an African country, and having actually been to Johannesburg, I can tell you that Capcom has the look of the place pretty damn close to reality. The only problem is the multi-ethnic cast of zombies, I saw white zombies and middle eastern zombies, and it just doesn't look right. Having a full cast of black zombies isn't racist, it's staying true to the setting.

i like this. gives it a more realistic feel to it. you're probably not going to be taking down hoardes of zombie-esque people while you are running. aren't zombies hard enough to kill anyway? then again, a slow walking back fire with a little lowered accuracy wouldn't hurt...

honestly the people who are crying about the controls need to grow a pair. this isnt Dead Space, nor Left 4 Dead get over it.

I bought RE4 in a bargain bin. The control scheme didn't make the game tense or scary and it was the worst game purchase I ever made. So yeah, sure, the control scheme in RE5 hasn't changed from RE4. Because of that, I won't buy or rent this game.
It really is as simple as that.

Dead Space was the most thrilling and frightening game I have ever played, and the control scheme allowed "running and gunning." I think a logical comparison can be made between this and RE.
Don't get me wrong, I loved resident evil 4. The movement restriction in that game did create some moments of high tension, but it also did create some frustration.
Ultimately, my first reaction was that being able to move in all directions while shooting would have been a welcome change, but it won't detract much from the experience.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. People confuse clumsy control with the pace of movement. Slow pacing add suspense to the game, not the crippled control. Dead Space is a perfect example of horror shooter control done right.
No one is asking for "gun n run", just a seamless, responsive control scheme.

I move Chris Redfield this way. I stop and shoot. I find another shooting spot. Reload. Repeat.
It's responsive to me buddy. And people are crying "I want this to be like every other shooter I've been playing the past 2 years! Where's my runnin and a-gunnin!"

I have never liked Tankident Evil for exactly this reason. It takes me out of the game completely if I have to stop moving to defend myself, and my character moves like he weighs 1200 pounds.

Me neither but if you start moving it turns into an Action game.It seems that's the only limitation that keeps Resident Evil 4 and 5 into the Survival Horror Genera and yeah is a pretty weak reason.

Any of you play Dead Space? It's proof that RE5 could have maintained the suspense with the walk & shoot gameplay. They could have even incorporated their own version of the 'dismemberment system'. Shoot a zombie in the leg to slow him down. in the arm, take away some of his ability to attack. any shot to the forehead an instant kill. (rather than the old 'anything above the neck' headshot.)
Posted: Feb 2nd 2009 8:46PM kentuckyfried said
It's not a dealbreaker, but I think RE5 would've benefitted from Dead Space's movement control. But to be honest, if you were trying to move while shooting in DS, it wasn't helping very much since you needed to aim, it's not like you could dodge while firing your guns.

I thought RE4 was the 2nd best PS2 game I ever played, and yet when I played the RE5 demo it felt dated. It seems to be stuck between wanting to be a survival horror and a balls out action game, and has ended up being awful at both, so why the hell not put run and gun in? It couldn't make it any worse than it already is. I'm only basing this on the demo though, the full game might surprise me and be awesome (and I hope it is). Also, no offense intended (since I don't know you), but you clearly do care what these guys think of you, otherwise you'd just ignore them. Just sayin'

"...there's been absolutely NOTHING to suggest that the 360 version will be superior to the ps3 version."
Actually, around the time the demo went live on NA XBL, there was a side-by-side comparison with HD screenshots of the current 360 build, and a (possibly early) PS3 build. (Thought I saw them here, but can't find the damn post...)
The lack of post-processing on the PS3 version was very noticeable, many of the textures were muddy and washed out, whereas the 360 was gorgeous.
I haven't heard if it's been straighted out or not, but I can't imagine Capcom being *that* lazy with a port.

My problem with the game isn't the lack of run and gun, it's the reused animations and stupid hit detection animation. When you shoot a guy in the kneecap and he staggers, awesome- when you then proceed to shoot him in multiple places all over his body and he just keeps doing that same stagger animation, it seriously pulls me out of the experience.
I do dig the co-op stuff from the demo, but certain aspects of the game lack polish while other parts are incredibly detailed. The graphics are great, the animations are reused and static.

I've always felt like the Resident Evil control scheme felt like an artificial handicap just thrown in there to make the game more difficult.
I appreciate the idea that you want to stay true to the genre and make a challenging game, but it comes off as very heavy-handed.
Chris Redfield. Most uncoordinated SWAT team member ever?
