I might just have to use a vacation day on March 10th, then.

...although I've done that before. It'd be better to take a day off work on the 11th, since most stores don't have new games on the shelf into the afternoon anyway, in my experience.

Have you ever played God Hand?

This is God Hand, reincarnate. More than enough of a reason to take off time for it.

Shaggi,

it does for the die-hard Wii owner Clover fans

Fatass,

No way, I like all about this game, but for what has been shown/mentioned it looks nowhere as deep as God Hand

The combo system definitely isn't but the sheer variety in terms of environmental weapons available certainly makes up for it and can make it just as varied as God Hand was

time,

haha, buddy, Im a PlayStation/Nintendo fanboy, I just don't happen to like most of the things that Nintendo has done this generation, from the low powered Wii, to messing up some of my favorite games just because they wanted to make them more accessible.

So yah, let me rephrase what I said before, "Clover/Suda51 games are the exception, not the rule"

I'm tentatively excited about this title. I love games that try something new or have a really cool gimmic (Braid-mechanics, bioshock-plasmids and narrative, Mario Galaxy- Level design, LBP- create and share). Its so hard to break new ground in gaming these days. Though this is just a beat-em-up, the art style and use of the environment could really make this something special. Please oh please let it be polished and fun.

It doesn't look like twelve other games released last year
It doesn't include aliens, marines (space or otherwise), or military officers
It doesn't include a means to scream at others online

Of course Alien Lord wouldn't want it

i bet it will break the 500k mark twice as fast than the great NMH due to the extensive viral marketing(NMH had none pretty much), asuming the game is good.If so, it will be succesful under any scope.I wouldnt be surprised it hits a million by end of year(games like call of duty WAW proved these games ,if good, sell like hotcakes on wii as well).

I hope it sells 500K faster than No more Heroes because NMH still hasn't sold 500K copies to this day.

Mark my words people. This game will be AWESOME. It's going to be just as kick ass as Okami was. Also, mark my words that it will be a commercial FLOP along the same lines as Valkyria Chronicles. I hate to make such a prediction but I personally feel that this game will not gain any traction (sales wise) on the Wii. I just don't think this type of game will sell in big numbers because the user base isn't there to support it. On top of that I haven't seen a single advertisement for the game in any magazine or on television.

I really want this game to be a critical darling and a commercial success but I just have the feeling that it's not going to push many boxes. I don't know what a failure would be in terms of sales but I'm thinking it will probably push 180K-300K in 2009 across all regions. Maybe that would be considered a success for this title because I'm not sure of the expectations.

I can say with 100% certainty that I will be buying this game upon it's release because it comes from one of my favorite Developers. It seems that all of Clover's games were mostly critically acclaimed but flopped commercially. Anyway, here is to hoping it succeeds so we can get more mature Wii games in the future from other publishers than Sega.

Nope. It'll crack the 500k mark easily. No More Heroes sold roundabouts 400,000 ultimately and MadWorld has far more hype than NMH did. Sega, so far, is also doing a good job of promoting the game. There are MadWorld in-store displays at some Gamestops, for example.

I hope your right but I just don't see it happening. Again, I want to belive it can succeed but I am seeing nothing to support that it will sell well.

Doesn't really matter to me because I will buy it anyway. However, it does matter in terms of wanting more mindlessly violent Wii games in the future.

From the data I have seen ...

Okami (PS2 & Wii) sold 350K total
God Hand (PS2) 70 K total
Viewtiful Joe (Gamecube) 120K total
Viewtiful Joe (DS) 70K total
Viewtiful Joe (PSP) 40K total

No More Heroes (Wii) 390K total

I couldn't find information on the other Viewtiful joe games or Killer 7's sales totals. I just think that Suda 51, Clover & Now Platinum are niche developers. This is why i don't think this game will sell more than 350K tops. I certainly don't see any circumstance where it will easily sell 500K. Here is to hoping that I'm wrong though.

Unfortunatly for Platinum they are a niche developer (like Team Ico) that is absolutely brilliant but is also selling to a niche audience on the platform. You have a niche game catering to a niche audience compared to the average demographic of the console.

I hope that I'm wrong and this games sells shit loads. It's just hard for me to see any kind of track history or pattern that goes against logic.

samfish,

I wouldn't put my bets on that.

As much as I love Clover, if Im not wrong, not one of their games has hit the 500k mark....and to say that they weren't supported would be naive (not as much for God Hand tho) there were ads everywhere for Okami and Viewtiful Joe...hell, not even the PS2 version of VJ fared well.

This time around Sega is also putting a lot of resources into advertising MadWorld, hopefully it does much better (both Sega and Clover deserve it), but I would also make a safe guess and say that it would be around 450k or so.

Hmm...not sure where those numbers come from. We know for a fact that Okami sold 300,000 on the Wii alone. PS2 version, according to Capcom, is slightly ahead of that. That'd put Okami in the ballpark of 600,000+.

To my knowledge, the first Viewtiful Joe sold about 500,000 on the GC. The PS2 version sold around half that later on. VJ2's GC/PS2 combined sales were about 500,000, according to Capcom.
I've heard the 70,000 for God Hand, though :\

I also should know better than to bet again the Clover Curse, but I'm takin' my chances!

well, yah, Okami did sell over 600k, but that has more to do that it is essentially the same game released twice on the best selling console of each generation....

As for Viewtiful Joe, I haven't been able to find anything concise data, but if it achieved PC we can say for sure that it must be 250+, and for what I heard, the PS2 sales were below that of the GCN version...if you don't mind, could you show me where you are getting those figures from?

and yah, I don't like to be a pessimist, after all, its Clover, but yah, I have lost so many bets hoping to break their curse...I have yet to win one :(

If anything, the game might get a small boost riding on Gears' coattails, for a man who looks suspiciously like Marcus Fenix wielding a chainsaw, with the chainsaw incorporated into the logo's art and blood plainly evident

The game is just easier to understand, i think. You kill things. And it has gotten some pretty handy promotion so far. Whether that'll break into the realm of TV advertising is doubtful, given Clover's track record, but i think 500k is a good estimate. There is a greater possibility of it beating 500k than shorting it, however

Baby J Penn,

"From the data I have seen ...

Viewtiful Joe (Gamecube) 120K total"

Impossible, Viewtiful Joe achieved Player's Choice, meaning that its sales must have been higher than 250k, stop pulling your numbers from vgchartz, they are awfully unreliable (and they only have the JP sales for VJ)

"Unfortunatly for Platinum they are a niche developer (like Team Ico) that is absolutely brilliant but is also selling to a niche audience on the platform."

Actually, I don't find them to be identical in any way other than that they are both critically acclaimed.

Anyway, as for Clover, the problem lies in that they are neither niche nor mainstream, they are in an awkward place, where some elements of their games are niche, while others elements of the very same game are mainstream, which ends up confusing many people and thus lowering sales.

How about giving me better source to pull my information from them. Typically VG Chartz is pretty reliable when looking back on previous sales. I admit it was an oversight on my part by not noticing it was on one regions sales.

Fatass,

we know, we are really expecting them to do better, hell, like I said, Im a Clover fan, and both them and Sega do deserve to make a lot, but we can't really measure the success of this title based on hype, because Viewtiful Joe AND Okami were on the same boat...and in VJs case, it was even multiplatform. Still, like samfish said, hopefully their curse goes away ;(

Baby J,

uh, probably official numbers such as those from Capcom themselves or NPD/Gfk/Enterbrain?

Dude, vgchartz is FAR from reliable, their numbers are often off, not only that, they guesstimate figures.

I think we'll see lots of controversy around this one. Sure, there's equally violent games, but they are not on "grampa's videogame". The visibility of the Wii will make this a target for the usual watchdogs, unfortunatelly. Waiting for Fox News to go ape over this.

What is sad, because it looks like a fun game, and I wish it very good sales.

If Fox News go ape over it that will be the best thing to happen to the game's sales, for sure.

As for the equally violent games not being on 'grampa's videogame', Manhunt 2 might beg to disagree. (There are several other violent games, some of which were actually good, but that one's the most controversial.)

If this game is good, I'd be surprised if it doesn't sell more than No More Heroes. It's had better promotion, more hype, the system's userbase is higher, and Wii owners remain equally starved of violent games.

Won't be buying a copy, personally.

Did they really just announce this? I've had my calendar marked (and title preordered) since just before i left for Spring term (which was back around January 17th, abouts)

Puts it right in the middle of my Spring Break. Which is good, because apparently my parents have decided that this year is the year i do my own taxes, and Spring Break is my only opportunity to do that, so it puts a bright spot on it.
