The handicapped controls are the only thing that separates this game from a straight up action game. If you ask the director why the controls in RE 1-3 are so unfriendly he will tell you that it is so you feel more helpless and not in control. It was purely to supplement the survival horror aspect of the game.

Obviously, RE 4 and now 5 are more action oriented then horror, but there is still very much the theme of survival which other action games don't really focus on. So, the stopping to aim control scheme allows for enemies to crowd around you more easily and puts you into situations where you must choose between attempting to fend off the crowd and retreating to safety.

It's not about realism, it's about taking away control. Love it or hate it, it's a game play design choice that has been a mainstay of the series.

EXACTLY. I don't understand why people don't recognize that this is an intentional mechanic of the game. It's not COD4...and even in MGO, people have to stop moving while firing weapons if they even expect to hit anything.

Fair enough. Most people hate it though, just thought you should know that. The developer will lose money because their game intentionally appeals to fewer people. If they don't care about their own game, then neither will I. Moving on...

Yeah. I'm very sure Capcom will cry themselves to sleep on their huge piles of money this game makes for the small percentage that isn't going to buy it because it's not GoW.

Wow, surprised by all this reaction, I didn't play it yet, but it seems like the game isn't as good as people hoped, I actually was disappointed from RE4, after an amazing start and then beating that big dude with the beard, the game went downhill, I think it was the midget.

It's good to me. The controls are being bashed heavily but they are fine. Apparently these kids are so deficient that they can't handle a different control scheme than Gears of War or something. They give you 4 layouts. I bet most people only used the default control setting (which I agree isn't great but not as bad as everyone makes it out to be). Type D controls are much easier to use since you can strafe with one stick and look around with the other.

Having said that, they pretty much ruined the game with HORRIBLE COOP AI. I'm not sure I've seen such dumb AI and when she dies...you lose. The whole point of the demo is to survive in this small area (on 2 levels). Yet you are stuck babysitting the Shieva the entire time cuz she gets mauled by enemies. Then it is difficult to heal her with how the menu is set up.

So overall, great game ruined by bad AI. I'd say the game is only worth purchasing if you have a friend to play with. Which I don't like since I like to sit down and relax from time and time and play games at my own pace. Playing online is alright but not something I should HAVE to do to get through singleplayer. It's singleplayer for a reason...cuz I want to play it ALONE and savor every moment. Not be handicapped by some dumb teammate.

At least the game looks very pretty.

You guys do recall RE5 is being developed with intense scrutiny to not mess with the RE4 formula, that being due in no small part to the fact that the creator of the damn game is no longer with Capcom.

So you're left with mindless Capcom minions fretlessly upping poly counts and adding shaders and effects while keeping 90% of everything else unchanged.

On a side note, the only thing that would save RE5 from the "mehness" factor it is undoubtably going to ensue once released is to give it the Wii controls of RE4.

Honestly, who here wouldn't take the Wii control set up with RE5 over 360/PS3 controls?

Let me rephrase that last bit:

"Honestly, who here wouldn't take the Wii control set up with any game on 360/PS3 over traditional 360/PS3 controls?"

Much better, because it's so true.

Yes, the online portion of an RE game is SOOO much more important than being able to play the game without getting frustrated every 5 seconds.... it does look pretty though.

Let's find some middle ground here. I'd like the 360's graphics and the Wii's accurate controls.

Since there's no such thing as an Xbox Wii60, I gotta ask: When does the PC version come out?

YEY!!! now all the PS3 gamers can enjoy the notasgoodasyouremembereditfromre4 controls like all us lucky 360 gamers have.

To tell you the truth if they wanted to keep the control scheme they should have bit the bullet and put it on wii, at least on that system you can turn with some sort of speed.

The RE control was bearable in the PS1/2 era. The world has moved on since. Personally I think cripple player's control in order to keep the suspense is BS. Believers of stiff control = suspense, I urge you to play Dead Space to experience a horror game control done right. Dont confuse suspense with frustration. I consider RE control belongs to the latter category.
This demo make me rethink about buying RE5, seriously.

I'll ask this. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Capcom apparently bitched out on the whole having black zombies thing and instead had some of them have much more lighter skin(which was so badly done that it made me laugh and rage) and some with hair cuts in order to make them look caucasian?

No.

But you can run...stop....turn slowly... pull up your reticule... aim slowly at your enemy... and fire until you quickly run out of bullets and are forced to use a silly knife mechanic

i was looking forward to this, and downloaded the demo half an hour ago. I wont be playing this again. things the devs need to explain:

a) Why do I have to stop to fire weapons?
b) why do i have to stop to reload?
c) Why does this feel like the 'Action' is merely lazy controls designed to slow you down so that you are forced to confront each and every enemy. Thats LAZY design. I should be able to run away like a fairy in a tutu if i want to.

RE4 was gorgeous. RE5 is pretty good looking too, but heres my point. Every generation, there is an evolution in graphics and gameplay. Only this time around, I think they forgot about the gameplay.

oh and another thing, if your going to force me to look after an NPC, as sexy as she may be, please make her so that she is able to die. That gives NPCs a sence of purpose and doesnt make them a ball and chain around your leg, something your forced to drag along. Anytime i find myself shooting the NPC, its game over man.

Left for dead has out zombied all of the old guard.

If Capcom seriously wanted a Gears of War game, they would've ported over Lost Planet's control scheme. Don't like the controls, don't play simple as that.

It's Resident Evil. Don't buy it if you didn't like the game demo. The control scheme has worked quite well once they revamped it with RE4. RE5 adds a strafe motion which was sorely lacking in the original.

I think people's complaints about the controls are understandable, but Resident Evil still plays just fine for what it is.

Dead Space is like Gears of War with surgical tools, and Resident Evil 4/5 are like a chess version of Gears of War. In that meaning, once you have found an opening to shoot, you stand your ground until you are over run and then you move on.

Dead Space you could back peddle and move while shooting, but you still had to make precise cuts into the enemies in order to weaken them.

Resident Evil just would lose it's strategic uniqueness if you could back peddle while shooting. (Cue: Downvoting, bitching about how this is crappy controls not strategic uniqueness, ryan has no idea what he's talking about etc.).

If you one the of those who truly enjoy this last gen control scheme, good for you. I enjoy challenging games just like the next guy ....... but not on the expense of unfriendly control schemes. If I died because of the inability to tell my in-game character to do exactly what I want, that's bad game design in my book.
I personally think Dead Space make the whole RE series a run for its $$$ in the suspense department, by clever game design, great lighting, sound effects, art work ...... not crippled control.

If you take out RE's control scheme then it really would be Gears of War.

Dead Space is unique because of it's dismemberment mechanics. That's what keeps it from running into Gears shoot-athon territory. And that's what is masking it's "superior than RE" control system. That's what makes it's survival aspect work.

RE can't do that. It just can't tack on Gears/Dead Space movement without turning it into a third person shooter. The challenge aspect is in it's stop-shoot formula, not crippled controls.

Sorry Ryan. I dont see any parallel between Gears and Dead Space. Gears has a much faster tempo and its signature cover system. Dead space exploit surgical shooting but I dont see that has anything to do with overall character control scheme.

The tempo of Dead Space is another key element for making it a horror masterpiece, in addition to the great design of atmosphere, both audio and visual wise. No even taking the dismemberment away from Dead Space wont make it a Gear clone.

If I understand your argument correctly, what you really like about RE is the relatively slow TEMPO, which and add considerable suspense element to the game. That can be done without using a stiff and "helpless" control. You have to press 2 buttons to fire in RE5 for goodness sake.

Gears of War: Move while aiming.

Dead Space: Move while aiming. It's not that hard to compare them.

Resident Evil is gunplay like Gears but in a fixed sense. You stop here to shoot, you move on. If you put "Move while aiming" into Resident Evil you get Gears. It's really not that hard to understand.

According to your logic you can just compare any 2 given "move and aim game" then.

How about compare RE with Time Crisis then?

GoW and Dead Space r totally different kind of beasts.

well this game is great, just the way RE4 was, definitely getting it when it comes out. For the people that say that capcom is going to lose money, and that are complaining about the controls. WELL i hope you guys know that this is a JAPANESES first game. and yea they will lose a couple of money but capcom can care less about your money as long as they make revenue, since their main market with resident evil has always been in japan they will make money.

It was like playing RE4 with less atmosphere, an uninspired Africa-setting and a cpucoop like a walking wall. Even the controls seem to be worse. And hey, light-colored horror?..

I own resi 0-4 and every game had its own dark art of horror and atmosphere. In the RE5 demo I can't find any vestiges of this style. I hope that'll be only in the demo.

it took me around 10 minutes to readjust my RE mindset, but after that the controls felt familiar again..

I'm no purist, but the RE4 scheme works for me. In fact, i expect a Resident Evil game to play differently from Gears and Dead Space or any other game, it requires a different strategy and 5 is in my humble opinion a huge, risk taking, step over 4 by including the online co-op option and a secondary character.

The strategy here is to get far enough from the enemies to allow you to aim and shoot, being smart not to get cornered, if they approach or you're out of ammo, move! Sheva adds another layer of strategy and tension, you must keep her close all the time, she's always giving you ammo and health, and when she's overwhelmed by enemies you can give them a punch. When she's away use the call button to bring her back. She only died with me when the mini-bosses caught her.

I guess people just want more of the same, expected a different game or are lazy to learn, i've read many angry posters on GAF who gave it a second chance change their opinions once they get the hang of it and online is FUN AS HELL.

still a day 1 here
