I have to agree with the first couple of comments. $50 is a good price, $60 is a little over the top.

It's not that I'm cheap people in general these days don't want to pitch out $60 plus tax for a game. Unless it's REALLY good or they like it.

Games on the last console generation were $50, and that was too much. I can understand inflation causes prices to rise over time, but $60 for new titles is simply WAY TOO MUCH money.

I hope prices to get slashed. A lot of the games I have spent $60 on, have had MAJOR problems, issues, and bugs. I guess they need to charge $70 or $80 to get the games right? No, they can do it right for less $, sell more copies, and make potentially more $ in the long run. simple as that.

50 or 60 doesn't make much of a difference for me. If it's one of my favorite developer's games, I buy it immediately. If not, I wait a couple weeks to see if it goes on sale at Amazon or elsewhere (usually does!)

That said, holy shit Uncharted is an awesome game. I know it came out in 2007, shush!

@Vanille

Yeah, the game that is widely acclaimed as being one of the very best looking games this gen has "shittier graphics".

You wonder why people say you don't make intelligent posts? Perfect example right there. Worse than stupid and pointless fanboyism you continually display your lack of knowledge of gaming - which is pathetic on a gaming website. Is SMB (that's Super...Mario....Brothers) still an 'old relic'? Will the next TR feature 'Lyra' Croft?

Moron.

It's about time. $60 is too much for a majority of titles. Since noticing the new trend of coming out with a $60 game that is discounted weeks or a month later, I've since started purchasing games after release instead of upfront.

Most of the time, I wait for other people to get sick of their 0day purchase and sell them at gamestop. I dont mind getting sloppy seconds, especially Blueray discs because they are pretty much immune to scratches. I bought some games on the first week they came out. It's only if they have a good online multiplayer though. IMO Single player games are not worth 60 or 50 bucks including tax.

At this point I'm convinced this guy is someone who works for AOL and Joystiq. How else would they get this many comments on a post like this? Usually it's on articles on Killzone 2, arguably the most controversial game among gamers this generation, or the Playstation 3 and Sony's chances of catching up, arguably the most controversial gaming related topic in the history of gaming. But no, this is just about the chances that games might go down five or ten bucks because of the economy. This is platform neutral, and yet somehow, Gundam manages to help the comments break 100, and stretch them to over 3 pages.

Must be an AOL employee helping pad those advertisement royalties.

I can usually buy 2-3 new movies for the price of 1 game. I like watching movies more anyway. Last year I only bought 5 games (Rock Band, GTA IV, Rock Band 2, Fallout 3, Gears 2) for $60 each, and probably got 40 or so movies at different prices.

Heres an idea, I am willing to pay 60 or even up to 70 dollars if i know the game is going to give me the play time (over 21 days on CoD4) AND it is supported for a few years. I would want the supported content to be free for play list updates and cheap for map packs. also, im tired of seeing devs put out costumes and shit that before the internet, was unlockable when i beat the game on hard mode. The other thing i would like to see would be in sports games, maybe release one every 2 or 3 years and just let new athletes be DLC and add new features that way too.

I wish they kept the servers on and just allowed the previous years Madden players to pay for DLC to update the following years rosters. They can also release a full featured Madden with upgraded features to compel certain people to upgrade.

I've only paid sixty dollars for 6 games, and I own fifty.

Madden '08
Madden '09
GTA IV
Rock Band
Rock Band 2
All Pro Football 2K8 (Not a great decision I know, but I really loved 2k5.)

I just usually wait until games drop to $40 and snag them.

I have always thought $60.00 is way too much. It should be no more expensiver than the PC version, 49.99 is more than adequate. If they want to offer more besides the game as is the case with many games and want to charge more than so be it, but 64.00 after taxes is too darn much!

This contrasts what's happened in Canada in the last two weeks. The entry price for new games has gone up from $59 to $69. Even at GameStop, used prices have gone up from $55 to $65 for new releases.

I really think Sports games should have their prices slashed down to 30 quid.
It's really funny over here how when the new fifa comes out, with an updated roster and slightly improved gameplay and graphics (an updated roster you say?! :O)
People lap it up for 60 quid without blinking.
The day Fifa 09 came out, Fifa 08 preowned dropped to €10.
It's a joke.

I think we should all remember that in other countries games are really expensive....I'm looking at you Australia. :(

It's an interesting one - apparently the game industry overtook the movie industry in revenue last year yet far fewer people play games ( i would guess) than go to the cinema. A movie ticket in the UK is around £8 and a new DVD typcally sells for around £15.

If new games arrived at £20 I would buy a hell fo a lot more, making them more impulse buys rather than scouring reviews then waiting till a few months when deep discount appears.

Start with a lower RRP and everyone is i would say

Of all the games I have for the 360, I've successfully managed to never pay more than $40 bucks for any them :D Everything but Ninja Gaiden is new, too.

That said, I'd welcome a drop in game prices in general. Many Wii games are starting to hit $40, thank God, so PS360 games should follow suit.

You do see some PS360 games launch cheaper than $60. I think all Wii games should be around $30-$40 unless they are good titles like most of the first party stuff and madworld, no more heroes etc ... For example, I don't think carnival games should be anywhere near $40-$50 bucks when it launches. I totally agree with you though that most PS360 games should be about $45 at launch. Games like Mirrors Edge & Dead Space are ones that you play through once and don't touch again. I think on the Wii that Wario Shake It should have been launched at around $25 total. It's a fantastic game but no replay value at all. Compare that to Brawl, Kart or Galaxy that have infinite replay value.

Durden made a good point. 60 can get you at least three totally different types of movies. I haven't ever seen a game that can do a 180 on genre from one playthrough to the next, let alone totally change genres three times.

As a father of 2 on a budget let me make my case: I have a hard time feeling sorry for the video game industry when a certain dev drives a friggin Lamborghini. The astronomical success of videogames has caused an inflation of their intrinsic value. They entertain and to that end, some people will pay ANYTHING (ask ticket scalpers). Now I know that publishers and fans place a time demand on these developers to get games out and get them out now, but for the love of GOD don't cry wolf and put out flawed software! I might not even make any case at all if the games didn't have so many glitches, bugs, poor implementations of game mechanics, etc. I'd rather not even hear about a game until it was close to being as perfect as these developers want them to be; and for that matter be honest about your game. You may be proud of it and well you should be, BUT if its not a $60 game, you friggin know it isn't. The internet has revolutionized the way people make their voices heard, but more often or not when the crowds cry out to these developers to PLEASE fix the games they make they are all too often ignored. Listen to us: We are paying your paycheck, we know what we are talking about when we say something's not right. Instead of looking for the next $60 you can milk from us, stay on board and release patches (I suppose this is aimed @ console games more so than PC) that directly address these problems. It's gotten so bad with so-called trip-A games that the fairly large group of fellow gamers I play with wait until they are available as used before buying them. True, there will ALWAYS be enough people who will buy games on release day to render my points almost laughable, but if that trend continues how much do you really like games? Make EVERY game as if it was the only one you were ever going to make and then I might consider $60 a bargain.
